May 10th Beaumont Event
This Saturday afternoon orienteering event was well managed by Regina Rueter
and Andrew Mogridge who shared the organising and planning. They were helped by
Meredith Rasch, Robyn and Peter Cutten, Frank Tomas and Andrew Waterman. The
event ran smoothly. There were three courses on offer and the 31 competitors reportedly
all enjoyed themselves.

Easter 2014

Eight Wallaringans travelled to the Mudgee/Lithgow area of NSW for this
year’s Easter orienteering carnival. Present were Andrew Kennedy, Jenny Casanova,
Jessica Jarvis, Mark Overton, Meredith Rasch, Peter Cutten, Peter Kreminski, Robyn
Cutten and Will Kennedy. Our club’s representation was not large in number, but on par
with other South Australian clubs and, given the relative inaccessibility of the area from
Adelaide, understandable.
More importantly, we all enjoyed ourselves, and these interstate events are an
opportunity for catching-up with interstate friends and rivals, as well as for club
conviviality. None of us starred in the eventual results, but Peter Cutten was able to
finish in the top half of his class.
The four days of the Easter events was followed by the ‘Dungeree Challenge’ on
the following Wednesday, the NSW Sprint Championships on the Friday. and the NSW
Long Distance Championships on the Saturday. Only the real orienteering tragics from
South Australia, including the writer, entered these. It was all fun, but I was glad to start
the long drive home after the last event.

almost equally spectacular on the other
days, and the weather was always
perfect.

An Exceptional Man
There was another reason for me journeying to the 2014 Easter Orienteering Carnival.
A few weeks before, I had been unexpectedly contacted by someone from my primary school days. I
had not heard from Graeme (‘Rats’) Starr for 62 years. Graeme was the captain of our primary school, but later
left school at fifteen. However, he eventually became a political scientist, academic and author. Graeme found
something I had written on the Internet and then contacted me.
Reminiscing about our time in Granville Public School, he wrote:
Our teachers were exceptional and highly motivated men who had returned from the war, taken the
opportunity to become teachers, and (unlike many teachers today) took their calling as an important
responsibility. You might like to know that on the day you started in 4A, Mr John George took me aside and
asked me to “keep an eye” on you and make sure none of the other boys gave you a hard time or made it too
difficult because of your language and settling-in problems. He pointed out that you had had an unusual
background and that some of the boys might not understand this. I hope I did not let him (or you) down.
I visited Graeme and his wife at their home in Wentworth Falls on the Thursday of the Carnival.

Flinders June Weekend
Thirteen club members participated in the three events available on the Queen’s
Birthday long weekend (on June 7, 8 and 9): Peter Ashforth, Jenny Casanova, Peter
Cutten, Robyn Cutten, Robin English, Jessica Jarvis, Andrew Kennedy, Will Kennedy,
Peter Kreminski, Mark Overton, Meredith Rasch, Justin Shao and Phil Stoeckel.
Our club did best in the South Australian Night Championships where
Meredith, Andrew, Will and Justin all took first place in their respective categories. In
the badge event the following badge scores were achieved:
Gold: Jessica, Meredith, Will, Jenny, Andrew
Silver: Justin, Peter C., Phil
Bronze: Robin, Peter K.
In the middle distance event the following day the following club members
came in the top half of the runners in the courses that they had chosen: Jenny, Will,
Meredith, Peter C., Jessica.
Right: Phil Stoeckel aided the organisers of
the badge event of June 8 by stationing
himself here near the start. He checked that
all starters passed close to the official
triangle before setting-out on their courses.
To his left is the track which was the site of
the start of the 2002 Australian Relay
Championships. Phil was in charge of the
Wallaringa team which performed that task
successfully.
More than 900 runners participated
that year. Many of those were from overseas
and these then went on to Victoria for the
World’s Masters Orienteering Champs.

faster than John by nine minutes.
