Plymouth Community Homes Case Study
Secure remote access to Plymouth Community
Homes’ corporate network thanks to VASCO’s
DIGIPASS
Plymouth Community Homes (PCH) is a not-for-profit housing association that was created to take over the ownership and management
of council homes in and around Plymouth, UK. PCH was set up to manage around 15,000 properties; it is the largest locally-based housing
association in the UK. It is dedicated to providing desirable, sustainable homes in strong communities.
Bob Thatcher, IT Infrastructure Technical Lead, explains the problem: “Plymouth
Community Homes needed a solution to provide secure access for employees to
connect to the company network from home or working remotely. Therefore, they
chose VASCO’s DIGIPASS to provide strong two-factor authentication because
of its flexibility, interoperability, ease of use and hassle-free deployment. Total
cost of ownership was also an important factor in the decision making process.”
REMOTE ACCESS
To keep track of the current trends and needs for its employees, PCH offers
its workforce the ability to work whilst out of the office. When in the office and
whilst working remotely via 3G or WIFI, Citrix XenDesktop provides PCH staff with
access to their desktop, applications and data. Two-factor authentication was
needed to guarantee remote access would be secure and manageable.
A SMALL HARDWARE DEVICE
PCH opted for VASCO’s DIGIPASS GO 6 in the front-end, supported by IDENTIKEY
Authentication Server. When an employee wants to log on, he or she only has to
fill in their username, password and the one-time password generated by the
DIGIPASS device. IDENTIKEY Authentication Server validates the authentication
requests and grants secure access to PCH’s corporate network. This solution
works seamlessly with the Citrix environment.
Stem Group, working in conjunction with the PCH IT department, procured and
deployed the VASCO system to all PCH staff requiring remote access.
COST AND INTEGRATION
“We opted for VASCO for several reasons,” Bob Thatcher, IT Infrastructure
Technical Lead at Plymouth Community Homes explains. “First of all, we have
confidence in VASCO’s authentication and network security. Secondly, they
offered us the best value for money. Thirdly, the ease of administration for adding
or amending users is very flexible, which means that the number of users can
easily be increased or diminished. In a nutshell, we are very happy with the extra
layer of security provided.”
