Summary
Due to an upgrade problem with Mac OS X, on some systems, the PCSC daemon may
become corrupted and block any communication to a smartcard reader.
This article describes a workaround for this issue.
Problem details.
Some driver packages (like e.g. ACS’s ACR38U driver which is installed as part of the
Belgian eID Middleware) include the OpenSC PCSCD autostart package.
This package has found to be causing issues with PCSCD after an OS upgrade of MAC
OS X to Mavericks.
This can be solved by re-installing the OpenSC PCSCD autostart package.
Problem Solution.
1. Download the pcscd_autostart.pkg file from the VASCO website.
Scroll down to the download section on this webpage:
http://www.vasco.com/products/client_products/card_reader_digipass/digipass_870.aspx
2. Locate the downloaded file (pcscd_autostart.pkg) in the downloads folder.
Press the control button on the keyboard, click on the file pcscd_autostart.pkg and
select “Open” from the drop down list.

If you just double click the file pcscd_autostart.pkg to open it, you will get this
error message:
3. Press the button “Open” to confirm that you want to open pcscd_autostart.pkg.
4. Press the Button “Continue” to continue to the installation.

5. Press the Button “Install” to start the installation.
6. Type your password to allow the installation of the package, and press the button
“Install Software” to start the installation.

7. Press the button “Continue Installation” to confirm you want to install the software
now.
8. Press the button “restart” when the installation has been completed
