This sesshin will be led by Dharma Holder Ron Hogen Green. This is a special opportunity for regular practitioners to strengthen their practice and for those new to Zen to experience the silence, introspection, simplicity and vigorous practice that characterize a Zen sesshin. Hojin will arrive Thursday evening. This retreat can be used toward fulfilling your Ango practice commitment.. Hogen has been engaged in formal zen practice since 1978, and was in residential training at Zen Mountain Monastery for twelve years. In 2007 Hogen returned to lay life. He currently lives with his family in Pennsylvania where he works as a pharmacist. If you are interested in attending this retreat, please register soon. Also, please take into consideration that many hands are needed to help with set up on Wednesday the 5th before the start of the retreat, and with clean up, packing and loading at the end of the retreat (Sunday the 9th.) Plan on joining the sangha for one or both of these caretaking periods. Registration forms need to be received by Wednesday, October 22 in order to adequately plan for the retreat. See Retreat Details and Registration Form on the following pages. Affiliated with Society of Mountains & Rivers, Based at Zen Mountain Monastery, Mt. If you need to cancel your registration, and you notify us a minimum of one week before the start of the retreat, your deposit will be returned, less a $25 processing fee. Because we typically incur expenses for rent, food and planning in advance of a retreat based on the number of registrations, refunds are not available if you give less than one week’s notice of cancellation, fail to appear for the retreat, arrive late, or leave early. ZAV reserves the right to cancel the retreat if necessary. In this case, your registration fee will be refunded within thirty days of cancellation. Orientation. If you have never attended a sesshin (intensive mediation retreat) or a zazenkai (all-day sit), plan to attend an orientation to familiarize yourself with sesshin precautions, the procedure for requesting the “encouragement stick”, private interview, liturgy practice and oryoki. Orientations are possible in Burlington (Robert Tokushu Senghas (985-9207), Montpelier (Tom Rinmon Slayton 229-0164), and Rutland (Ric Ryoha Dunworth 228-2476). What to bring. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for zazen. Bring clothes appropriate for working indoors and out, including warm clothing and gear for inclement weather. Please bring slippers or sandals to wear indoors. Bring a zafu, seiza bench and a zabuton, if you have them. You will need to bring your own towel, pillowcase, sheets and/or sleeping bag. Phone. The phone in the kitchen at Tamarack Farm will be available for our use (folks will need a calling card to call out) and family members can call in to that number as well. The Farmhouse kitchen direct number is (802) 422-3447. The best emergency number for family/friends to call during the retreat would be the Farm & Wilderness paging service. The number is 1-888-622-3276 ( 1-888-622-FARM). The service will ask who you would like to page; you should inform family members to page “retreat”. They should leave their name and a call back number. This will page the F&W staff person on call for the weekend. They will pass along the message directly to you.
