Accelerating the next era of storage for a New Style of IT
Regardless of the size of your organization, you’re likely to face modern storage challenges that
are substantially different from those of the past. Yet many of the legacy storage architectures
still in use today were originally designed more than two decades ago.
The world today has much different demands—users not only require immediate access to
an ever-growing avalanche of data, but virtualization, IT as a service (ITaaS), Big Data, cloud
computing, mobility and the introduction of flash-based media are placing new demands on
storage architecture. With IT budgets shrinking, and user expectations on the rise, this means
that you need to meet these demands while controlling costs but without sacrificing service
levels.
In light of these changes, it’s crucial that you make your storage investments in modern storage
architectures built to handle dynamic and unpredictable workloads. Storage today must deliver
efficient consumption and distribution of resources, scale to meet growing demands, and
provide the flexibility to accelerate new applications and services. In short, you need simple,
agile storage that can grow with your business, both now and into the future.

Virtualization features
MSA 1040 Advanced Virtualization Upgrade
Fourth generation MSA arrays support a powerful set of data services enabled with a new virtualized array system architecture.
MSA 1040 customers have access to a number of these new features via a firmware upgrade and paid license feature. Supported
virtualization features supported on MSA 1040 with the Advanced Virtualization Upgrade are: thin provisioning, Redirect-on-Write
snapshots, automated tiering (Archive tiering only), wide striping and the use of a new MSA web-based interface.
HP MSA Snapshot Software
HP MSA Snapshot Software services enable increased data protection by creating recovery points for your data, taking a “picture” of your
data at a specific point in time. Snapshots are then maintained even as data continues to change. In the event of a failure, you can recover
data to any previous snapshot. Snapshots are a great complement to tape or disk backup strategy. MSA Snapshot functionality is
controller-based so no host resources are used. MSA 1040 Copy Services utilize Copy-on-Write capabilities when operating on Linear
Volumes and Redirect-on Write capabilities when operating on virtualized volumes (only on MSA 1040’s with Advanced Virtualization
Upgrade2). MSA 1040 arrays come with 64 snapshots bundled in the base product with an upgrade available to support up to 512
snapshot.
HP Volume Copy Software
HP MSA Volume Copy Software makes a physical copy of the data to another set of disks within the same array. One of the benefits of
Snapshot and Volume Copy software is the ability to mount a Snap or Volume Copy to another server for backup, application testing, or
data mining. HP Volume Copy Software is controller based, meaning no host resources are used. MSA 1040 arrays ship standard with
Volume Copy. Volume Copy only works with linear volumes.
HP MSA Array Remote Snap Software
Built on asynchronous replication technology that provides remote replication on the HP MSA 1040/2040 and HP P2000 G3 Arrays (FC,
Combo FC/iSCSI, or iSCSI models), is optional.

Virtualization features
The 4th generation of MSA provides support for a powerful set of data services enabled with a new virtualized
array system architecture. Existing MSA 2040 customers have access to these new features via a firmware
upgrade. Features supported in new virtualization firmware are:
•Thin Provisioning. This feature allows storage allocation of physical storage resources only once they are consumed by
an application.
•Wide Striping. By leveraging virtualized storage “pools”, MSA 2040 users can leverage wide striping technology to
simplify volume expansion and to facilitate full utilization of all resources allocated to a specific volume.
•SSD Read Cache. Improves random read performance by allowing an SSD to be utilized as an extension of the MSA 2040
controller cache.
•Automated Tiering (with Performance and Archive Tiering). Utilizing a real-time I/O engine to intelligently position
data on the most appropriate “tier” of storage. For customers leveraging MSA’s Performance tiering capacities (paid
software feature), users will see improved application response times on both read and write activities for frequently
accessed data and better utilization of storage resources through the ability to move data which has not been accessed
for long periods of time off to more cost effective Midline SAS HDDs (Archive Tiering).
•Virtualized Snapshot services. Created specifically for MSA’s virtualized storage architecture, the MSA 2040 will be able
to utilize Redirect-on-Write technology to provide better snapshot performance and the ability to create more complex
snapshots with simplified snapshot management.
•New Web User Interface. The new virtualized array architecture also comes with a powerful, embedded Storage
Management Utility which will make setup and management of the MSA 2040 and these new features a breeze. Users
familiar with MSA’s previous Web UI will have the option to continue on or take advantage of the new UI.

StoreVirtual Family All-Inclusive Software
Space Reclamation
Transition unused storage from volumes and snapshots and return it to the storage pool to
maximize your data storage. With integration for both VMware and Microsoft, space is reclaimed
on both full and thinly provisioned volumes.
Improved Multi-pathing for vSphere
Enhanced multi-pathing for reduced latency on flash deployments and site awareness for
multi-site clusters. Increase the efficiency of your workloads by directly connecting the server
host with storage volumes.
Adaptive Optimization
Dynamically and automatically move data from Tier 1 to Tier 0 to ensure your most frequently
accessed pages are on your fastest tier. To balance cost and performance, Adaptive
Optimization enforces extremely efficient use of valuable SSD capacity, by keeping the SSD tier
full and applying change thresholds to ensure data reads and writes are not impacted. This
feature is available on the StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid and StoreVirtual VSA.
StoreVirtual Scale-out architecture
Add nodes seamlessly to expand a cluster at any time without disruption to applications. Simply
add or remove nodes with just a few clicks in the Central Management Console (CMC). Scaling
occurs linearly in both performance and capacity with HP’s scale-out architecture. Adding a
node to a cluster not only adds disk drive performance and capacity, but also another CPU,
cache, and IO ports.
Store Virtual Thin Provisioning
Allocate space only as data is actually written without requiring pre-allocation of storage.
This feature is leveraged by other StoreVirtual features like remote copy and snapshots. Thin
Provisioning is supported and recommended for all applications. Because LeftHand OS uses a
granular page allocation size of 256k, StoreVirtual’s thin provisioned volumes remain lean and
efficient over time.
StoreVirtual Network RAID
Transparently stripe and protect multiple copies of data across a cluster of storage nodes,
eliminating any single point of failure in the HP StoreVirtual array. Applications have continuous
data availability in the event of a disk, controller, storage node, power, network, or site failure.
StoreVirtual Snapshots
Create thinly provisioned, instant point-in-time copies of data on a per-volume basis. Customers
can recover individual files from the volume or rollback an entire volume. Snapshots are thinly
provisioned with no space reservation required. A granular 256K page size maximizes the
snapshot efficiency. StoreVirtual also includes Recovery Manager software to speed recovery of
data from snapshots.
StoreVirtual Peer Motion
Add, migrate, or replace volumes or entire clusters to a new cluster with StoreVirtual Peer
Motion without disruption. Customers can easily mix StoreVirtual VSA and StoreVirtual
hardware based solutions within clusters by using StoreVirtual Peer Motion.

HP 3PAR StoreServ family software
HP 3PAR Operating System software
Supported across all HP 3PAR Storage models, HP 3PAR Operating System (OS) software
utilizes advanced internal virtualization capabilities, features, and tools to increase storage
management efficiency, capacity utilization, and performance in enterprise and cloud data
centers. HP 3PAR OS simplifies storage management by handling provisioning and change
management autonomically—intelligently, at a subsystem level, and without administrator
intervention. Autonomic provisioning features reduce traditional storage planning by delivering
instant, application-tailored provisioning. Fine-grained virtualization of lower-level components
and wide striping of data help ensure that service levels remain high and predictable, even as
the use of the system grows or in the event of a component failure. Industry-leading ease of
use is delivered through the simple, unified HP 3PAR Management Console and the powerful,
scriptable HP 3PAR CLI.
HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning software
Do you have storage pools that aren’t really efficient?
HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning software solves the problem of inefficient capacity utilization
by breaking the traditional link between allocated and purchased capacity. Demand
for thin provisioning solutions combined with increased attention to data center power
consumption has put pressure on vendors to introduce thin provisioning solutions, but bolt-on
implementations can’t deliver the simplicity or the efficiency of thin provisioning.
Makes organizations more agile and efficient
by reducing upfront capacity reservations and
allowing disk capacity to be purchased only as
needed
With HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning software, capacity is dedicated and configured autonomically
on a just-in-time basis, and without active management. Rather than creating separate pools of
storage, the software creates one pool from which capacity is dedicated only as data is written.
And while other thin provisioning implementations use coarse allocation units that can range
from 1 MB to 17 GB, HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning uses a fine-grained, 16 KB allocation unit to
increase system efficiency.
HP 3PAR Thin Conversion software
What can you do to improve the capacity efficiency of your legacy storage volumes without
complex data migration or professional services?
Leverages zero-detection capabilities within
the HP 3PAR StoreServ Gen4 ASIC to drive the
conversion of inefficient “fat” volumes on legacy
arrays to more efficient “thin” volumes on HP 3PAR
StoreServ Storage
HP 3PAR Thin Conversion software leverages the zero-detection capabilities within the HP
3PAR StoreServ Gen4 ASIC to drive the conversion of inefficient “fat” volumes on legacy arrays
to more efficient, higher utilization “thin” volumes on HP 3PAR Storage. This “thinning” of
volumes enables data centers to meet “green IT” targets, reduce wasted space, and increase
utilization rates. Because the fat-to-thin conversion mechanism is built into the array hardware,
volume conversions take place inline at wire speed while preserving service levels, and without
disrupting production workloads.
With HP 3PAR Thin Conversion software, a technology refresh no longer requires a terabytefor-terabyte replacement, but instead offers the opportunity to reduce capacity requirements
almost by 50 percent or more without the need to invest in professional services.
HP 3PAR Thin Persistence software
Leverages the HP 3PAR StoreServ Gen4 ASIC to help you reclaim the unused space associated
with deleted data nondisruptively.
Means that thin volumes on the HP 3PAR
StoreServ Storage stay as lean and efficient as
possible by leveraging the HP 3PAR StoreServ
Gen4 ASIC to reclaim unused space associated
with deleted data, nondisruptively
What good are thin provisioning savings if they can’t be preserved over time? HP 3PAR Thin
Persistence software means that thin volumes on HP 3PAR StoreServ stay as lean and efficient
as possible by leveraging the Gen4 ASIC to reclaim unused space associated with deleted
data—simply, quickly, and nondisruptively. Writing and deleting large amounts of data can
leave unused space within thin volumes. Even lots of small writes and deletions can eventually
reduce the efficiency of thin volumes. This logical deletion of data that doesn’t actually free up
unused space creates a hidden utilization penalty that can add up significantly over time.
HP 3PAR Thin Persistence software reclaims this unused space to increase capacity efficiency,
keep costs down, and help defer the purchase of additional capacity to handle new data growth.
The software also helps enterprises maintain sustainability targets by keeping down data
center power and cooling needs.

HP 3PAR Thin Deduplication software
Deliver quicker paybacks by deduplicating data at a granular level while providing better space
savings. With HP 3PAR Thin Deduplication Software, the CPU intensive jobs of calculating
signatures for incoming data and verifying reads are offloaded to the ASIC. Via Express Indexing,
the data signature comparisons is accelerated and ultra-fast detection of duplicate write
requests is done, in order to prevent duplicate data from being written. This helps in freeing
up processor cycles to deliver advanced data services and service I/O requests. The hardware
assisted approach enables inline deduplication that carries multiple benefits, including
increased capacity efficiency, flash performance protection, and flash media lifespan expansion.
HP 3PAR Thin Clone software acts as an extension of Thin Deduplication for server virtualization
environments, providing host-assisted deduplication that produces non-duplicative VM clones
for Microsoft Hyper V and VMware ESXi.
HP 3PAR Peer Motion software
With HP 3PAR Peer Motion software, you can load balance I/O workloads across systems at will,
perform a technology refresh seamlessly, cost-optimize asset lifecycle management, and lower
the capital expenditure of a technology refresh. Unlike traditional block migration approaches,
Peer Motion enables you to migrate storage volumes between any HP 3PAR StoreServ systems
online nondisruptively, and without complex planning or dependence on extra tools. The
software leverages HP 3PAR Thin Built In technology to power the simple and rapid inline
conversion of inefficient “fat” volumes on source arrays to more efficient, higher utilization
“thin” volumes on the destination HP 3PAR StoreServ model. Peer Motion Manager is an add-on
application that orchestrates all stages of the data migration lifecycle to help ensure that data
migration is simple and foolproof.
HP 3PAR Peer Persistence software
HP 3PAR Peer Persistence software enables a nearly continuous storage system to the hosts
and servers connected to them. This capability allows you to configure a high-availability
solution between two sites or data centers where failover and failback remains completely
transparent to the hosts and applications running on them. Compared to the traditional failover
models in which the hosts must be restarted after a failover, 3PAR Peer Persistence software
allows hosts to remain online serving their business applications even when they switch from
their original site to the disaster recovery (DR) site, resulting in a much improved recovery time.
HP 3PAR Virtual Copy software
Need to create snapshots for data backup, application recovery, and business intelligence, as
well as expedite development and testing?
HP 3PAR Virtual Copy software flexibly delivers instant, point-in-time (PIT) copies of your data
so that you can share and protect data from any application simply and affordably. You can use
HP 3PAR Virtual Copy software to stay ahead of the innovation curve—for example, you can
enable rapid application recovery—while containing costs with a “thin-aware” implementation
that reduces the amount of physical capacity that is being consumed by your data—and
without sacrificing performance, availability, or versatility. Most traditional copy solutions
lack flexibility and require an investment in online capacity to be considered economical. HP
3PAR Virtual Copy software is a reservationless, nonduplicative copy-on-write product that
consumes capacity only for changed data—in fine grained increments, and without the need to
duplicate changed data within a snapshot tree.
HP 3PAR Remote Copy software
Do you want the ability to replicate data to remote locations more efficiently and costeffectively?
HP 3PAR Remote Copy software dramatically reduces the cost of remote data replication and
DR by leveraging thin copy technology, enabling multi site and multi mode replication with both
midrange and high-end arrays, and reducing the need for professional services.
18
HP 3PAR Remote Copy software offers fast and autonomic DR configuration; it can be set up and
tested almost in minutes, from a single window. This software leverages the HP 3PAR Thin Built
In ASIC to utilize expensive remote copy bandwidth efficiently. With support for synchronous
long-distance replication, you can have an affordable, multi site alternative for achieving low
recovery time objectives (RTOs) and zero-data-loss recovery point objectives (RPOs) with
complete distance flexibility.

HP XP family software
HP XP7 High Availability software
HP XP7 High Availability (HA) Software is an Active-Active High Availability Solution offering
on HP XP7 Storage. The high availability feature is based on XP7 Multi Array Virtualization
capability. HP XP7 High Availability Software supports two use cases: Active-Active HA and
Active-Active Access.
•Active-Active HA provides 100% storage uptime from a DR configuration even if an array and/
or entire datacenter goes offline. An XP7 High Availability configuration with two XP7 systems
is architected for 15 nines average availability.
•Active-Active Access provides non-disruptive, transparent VM and/or clustered application
mobility between hosts or servers at the same or different sites.
The HA Virtual Storage Machine feature is new to the XP product line. Multi Array Virtualization
(MAV) provides the virtualization architecture software to setup local or clustered mirrored
volumes that look the same to any supported Host multi-path/cluster software. MAV replicates
the data across XP7 arrays up to a synchronous distance and provides delta re-sync capability
in case of failure/maintenance. HA can be combined with any of the other traditional mirroring
program product like XP7 Business Copy, Fast Snap to make additional copies. HA requires a
quorum device located on an external storage device.
Host then can use generic multi-path solutions for Active-Active access, load balancing as the
Virtual Storage Machine hides and handles HA complexity.

replication for HP XP P9500 Storage. The software is part of the HP comprehensive suite of
business continuity and availability solutions that enable you to maintain constant access
to your data, even if access to a site is lost. HP XP P9000/XP7 Continuous Access software
products are integrated with server clustering software solutions to provide high levels of
availability and disaster tolerance. To protect your business from disasters of any size, whether
local or wide area, you can create Three-Data-Center (3DC) disaster recovery solutions, with
one data center located a continent away. If you simply need to move data from one location to
another or from one generation of HP XP P9500 Storage to another, HP XP P9000 Continuous
Access software provides a reliable high-performance data migration solution. HP XP P9000
Continuous Access software is available both in synchronous and journal (asynchronous)
options
HP XP P9000/XP7 Business Copy software
HP XP P9000/XP7 Business Copy software is a local replication solution that provides data
copies within a single HP XP P9500 Storage, or in storage systems attached to an XP P9500
Storage environment as external storage. XP P9000/XP7 Business Copy software uses
array-based replication technologies that do not interfere with host-level operations, allowing
organizations to spend time conducting business rather than worrying about how backup and
testing operations will impact their systems. Providing PIT snapshots and mirrors, XP P9000/
XP7 Business Copy software reduces the cost of backups, accelerates recovery from failures,
provides deployment flexibility, and simplifies application testing.

environment. It allows you to supply disk storage capacity to your applications from a pool of
virtualized storage. By enabling you to allocate your anticipated future storage capacity needs
from virtual disk storage, HP XP P9000/XP7 Thin Provisioning software reduces the amount of
physical disk capacity initially required. As the utilization of disk space increases over time, you
can purchase more disk capacity as it is needed and install it without affecting your applications.
HP XP P9000/XP7 Thin Provisioning software reduces your initial storage acquisition costs,
lowers total cost of ownership, and allows you to defer some storage purchases to a later time.
You can configure large logical volumes using reduced physical capacity and pay for and install
storage only when it is needed.
HP XP P9000/XP7 External Storage software
In today’s business world, mergers, acquisitions, and technology changes have created IT
environments where varieties of dissimilar servers and storage must coexist. HP XP P9000/
XP7 External Storage software decreases the stress associated with and the cost of owning
heterogeneous data storage by simplifying and centralizing common SAN management tasks
through storage virtualization. In addition, it simplifies data movement between dissimilar
arrays. HP XP P9000/XP7 External Storage software provides these benefits by giving you
the ability to access, monitor, and manage data on a variety of different disk arrays as if all
of the data were on an HP XP P9500 Storage environment. Through advanced virtualization
technology, HP XP P9000/XP7 External Storage software enables the hosting of HP XP P9500/
XP7 Storage data on externally attached disk arrays. Servers can see the capacity of the various
arrays, but are insulated from the physical attributes.

it becomes available for use. The copy can be either virtual or physical. If a virtual copy is
specified, it remains a pointer-based copy that saves only the changes from the original copy.
However, if a physical copy is specified, a full copy will be completed in the background while
both the source and the copy remain available for access.
HP XP P9000/XP7 for Compatible Parallel Access Volumes software
HP XP P9000/XP7 for Compatible Parallel Access Volumes (PAV) and HP XP P9000/XP7 for
Compatible Hyper PAV software enable high-performance, concurrent access of mainframe
volumes by permitting a mainframe host system to issue multiple I/O requests in parallel to
individual logical devices within the HP XP P9500/XP7 Storage environment. Without HP XP
P9000/XP7 for Compatible Hyper PAV software, mainframe systems can initiate only one I/O
request per device at a time, and must wait for the I/O to complete before starting another I/O
request to the same device. By utilizing alias addresses that all point to the same device as the
base address, HP XP P9000/XP7 for Compatible PAV software enables the host system to start
several I/O requests simultaneously to the same device, thus greatly improving performance.
The XP P9500/XP7 Storage system supports static HP XP P9000/XP7 for Compatible PAV
software, dynamic HP XP P9000/XP7 for Compatible PAV software, and HP XP P9000/XP7 for
Compatible Hyper PAV software.
