Play and Leisure Skills for Children and Adults under the ASD
Spectrum
Abstract: Engaging in Play and leisure skills helps to develop
fundamental cognitive skills. Social skills such as conversation,
perspective turn taking, imagination and problem solving, fine and gross
motor skills can be developed using play skills. Deficit play skills can
have negative impact on development as they reduce opportunities to
interact with same age peers. For many students with ASD, learning and
using appropriate play skills can be challenging and difficult. The
workshop will deal with empowering parents /therapists with introduction
to different aspects of play .The audience will learn to incorporate
strategies of play skills in their therapy program using the principles and
techniques of ABA .It will deal with important aspects of leisure skills
for young, school going to adults under ASD Spectrum .The following
aspects of play will be highlight with hands on and video demonstration:
Constructive play ,Imaginative play ,Socio dramatic play, Interactive play
, Imitative play, Parallel Play, Associative Play, Joining and Initiating
Play ,Cooperative Play , Tracking independent play,Playing Physical
games
Participants: Professionals and Parents
Level: Intermediate

graduate studies in ABA from The University of Florida. She has a
Master’s in Education and Education Psychology .She did her Post
graduate certification in Autism from Chennai, India and also has a Post
graduate certification in Creative Movement Therapy for children with
special needs. She has her Bachelors in Education and Science. She has
more than 22 years’ experience working with children under special
needs. She has many years of experience working with individuals with
ASD in different settings like centre, group homes and home based
programs. She was also involved in integration of children in mainstream
schools. Prior to working with special needs children, she has worked in
mainstream schools. Her primary interest is in Skinner's Verbal Behavior
Approach and Application of ABA principles to teach language and deal
with behavioral issues in children with Autism and Developmental
Disabilities. She is an integral member of ABAI. Currently she is
working as a Head of Autism Unit at Al Noor Training Centre Dubai. She
has vast experience of conducting various Workshops for Parents and
Para professionals in Autism.
WORKSHOP # 2:
Julianne Bell, BCBA
Teaching intermediate and advanced language students to engage in
appropriate conversation.
Abstract
Once a child with ASD or Developmental Delay begins an Intensive
Behavioural Intervention, they can often make significant progress in a
wide variety of language concepts such as object identification, colours,
adjectives, prepositions, gender, pronouns etc. However, consultants and
parents often find that the same student, when placed in a social situation
with a peer or adult, is unable to independently use these language skills to
generate simple, natural sentences to comment on their own or others’
actions, to answer social questions about themselves or what they have done
in the past, or to initiate and sustain conversation on general topics of
interest to their peers. This workshop will address use of behavioural
principles and visuals supports to teach appropriate conversations skills to
those students who have progressed to using intermediate or advanced
language.
Participants: Parents and professionals
Level: Intermediate to advanced

Mainstreaming children with Autism in schools: Skill areas to work
on and how : Smita Awasthi, MA, PhD Student, BCBA
Abstract
More and more children with Autism, ADHD and Aspergers are now
provided opportunities by the Indian Government to seek admission in
inclusive settings. However, the schools are still not ready to provide the
kind of support needed by the student due to various reasons. What can
parents and professionals do to ensure that children acquire skills which
are required to stay in school. This workshop addresses skill areas
needed by a child to be successful in a classroom setting, How to teach
those skills and ensure generalization in school environments.. The
workshop is based on using ABA principles and procedures.

Whats The Function- Addressing challenging behaviors
Abstract:
Parents and professionals often find that managing children’s
challenging behavior is not only time-consuming but also
exhaustive, both physically and mentally. Further, the parents are
faced with questions like why is the child exhibiting those behaviors,
can the behaviors be controlled, should the behavior be ignored,
what can be done to prevent it, how to control it and so on.
In this workshop, the above questions will be addressed. In addition,
emphasis will be placed on providing various evidence-based plans
to handle challenging behaviors based entirely on the function of
those behaviors (functional behavior-analytic approach). In other
words, the presenter will outline ‘why’ these behaviors are occurring
and what can be done to reduce it.
Participants will learn
1. How to objectively view and measure the challenging
behaviors
2. Avoid common pitfalls when analysing challenging
behaviors
3. How to work toward a functional behavior-analytic approach
4. What is the function of the child’s behaviour or why the child
is exhibiting the behavior
5. Different behavior management plans based on the function
of the behavior
6. How to design and evaluate the effectiveness of the plan
Workshop # 5
Throughout this workshop, case studies will be illustrated along with
an interactive session with the participants to discuss the best
outcome plan for the challenging behavior.
Level: Basic to Intermediate
Participants: Parents and Professionals

Tasneem Hegde is a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst who
received her MS degree with honours in Clinical Psychology from
Indian Institute of Psychology and Research, Bangalore. She began
pursuing her interest in the field of Behavior Analysis by working as
an ABA therapist under the supervision of a BCBA. She
subsequently worked as a lead therapist in home programs and since
then has successfully worked her way up to gaining rigorous
experience in the field of Autism and Developmental Disabilities
over the years. She currently works in Bangalore and is providing
centre-based ABA services and works with parents and schools in
handling problem behaviours and programming for classrooms.
Tasneem's primary interests lie in handling problem behaviors while
teaching community and daily living skills using effective ABA
based procedures.
Developing Stimulus Control Effectively and Efficiently
Abstract:
The development of control by antecedent stimuli is perhaps the
largest part of working with families of children with Autism. This
workshop will focus on developing and implementing effective and
efficient procedures to establish stimulus control. The workshop is
designed for parents and therapists who are familiar with stimulus
control procedures and their use in systematic behavioral
intervention. The focus will be on ways of identifying impediments
in the development of stimulus control and on improving upon
inefficient or ineffective procedures. The workshop will alternate
between short (3-5 minute) presentations of conceptual foundations
and longer (15-20 minute bouts of learning by doing. The structure
of the workshop is designed to promote problem solving and analytic
thinking – participants should be prepared to actively work with
other people. Workshop registrants will be asked to forward
examples of challenges and difficulties they encounter commonly so
these can be directly addressed in the workshop.
Bio :
Manish Vaidya earned his Ph.D. in Behavior Analysis at the
University of Florida and spent a year working as post-doctoral
fellow at the University of Kansas before taking a faculty position at
the University of North Texas. It was during these years that he
became interested in issues related to the development and
maintenance of simple and complex control by antecedent stimuli.
He has spent the last 20 years conducting basic and applied research
on stimulus equivalence and various other aspects of the
development and decay of stimulus control in pigeons and people.
His presentations here at the conference are focused on the practical
implications of his and others’ research on stimulus control and
stimulus equivalence in producing significant improvements in the
lives of children with Autism and their families.
