Ottawa Branch Bulletin February 2014 Bulletin Editor: Eric Clyde [email protected] 613-749-2387 Snail mail: 1195 Foxborough Private, Ottawa ON K1J 1E2 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR by Karen Moxley Happy Valentine's Day! Cupid has let it be known, that Wayne Greer is rallying all the lads to make this year's Valentine's social a SWEETHEART of an event. Word has it that yummy treats, FUN décor and valentine favours are all in the plans, as the lads toast the lasses! The Valentine program and cribs can be found on our website rscdsottawa.ca . So please don your favourite red & white attire and join us for a FUN evening of dancing on February 14th at the Parkdale Church Hall. 8pm -$7 admission fee. Hopefully, you had an opportunity to celebrate Scotland's favourite poet's birthday! Our Robbie Burns themed social on January 17th was definitely a salute! A huge thank you to Wayne Greer "for his over the top performance" in delivering the haggis ceremony! A wee bit of pomp and ceremony was much appreciated in chasing the January blues! And … haggis wasn't the only delicacy served at the January social, so our thanks to the Experienced Social Class for hosting and providing all the goodies. Thanks also, to Barbara Munro for devising the beginner friendly program, and I must say it was wonderful to see so many of her class dancing. A reminder too, that the February social has lots of beginner dances – please, please, plan to attend! So if you didn't attend our Robbie Burns Social, perhaps you had a chance to dance at the many other events around town. With Robbie Burns Day falling on a Saturday this year, there certainly seemed to be lots to choose from. Many of the local pubs also embraced the Scottish theme- Haggis Poutine anyone? The RSCDS Demonstration Team has certainly been dancing out and about lately. The team along with Heather Reid and James Kirkhope provided an entertaining Robbie Burns afternoon including dancing, singing and an address to the Haggis for the residents of the Crystalview Lodge on January 26th. The Dem team also performed on January 18th for the Irish Society Ceilidh and they will be dancing Feb 7th at St Augustines's Senior Club. The Demonstration Team is always looking for new members. If you are an intermediate level dancer or better, and interested, please contact Phyllis MacCulloch. Our Annual Ball is fast approaching. Barbara and John Bottriell, and the class convenors have tickets for sale. Please buy your tickets ASAP as this helps greatly in the planning. Tickets are $110 for dancers and $70 for non-dancers. For those of you who have never attended the Annual Ball, it is always a great night, with a served multi-course meal, live music and lots of FUN dancing. The venue remains the same as last year, though it is now being called the Ottawa Conference and Event Centre, same place, same wonderful underground free parking! I'm hoping to see you all on April 5th! On April 6th, the Branch will hold a pot-luck brunch at the Jim Durrell Centre -10am. Beatrice Gaertner has again kindly agreed to convene this FUN event. Everyone is welcome to attend, including family and friends. Price of admission is a pot-luck dish. As everyone knows the Branch has some of the BEST cooks, so a feast is guaranteed! Speaking of good cooks, the 50th Anniversary committee is asking for recipe submissions. Please send your favourite recipes to Katie Shaw or John for inclusion in our special 50th Anniversary Cookbook. The latest news from the RSCDS in Scotland, is that they are planning world-wide Scottish Ceilidh to be held at 7:30pm local time on June 21 to commemorate the Commonwealth Games. Plans are in the works for the Branch along with Ardbrae to host a spectacular event here in Ottawa. We are currently awaiting details on how to proceed. However in the meantime, please circle the date on your calendar! As you probably know, we are always looking for ideas to increase membership. An opportunity arose this month to offer a Scottish Country dance class as a birthday party for a Swing Dancer. Thanks to Charlie Inglis for teaching this special group on Jan 27th at the Jack Purcell Centre. Along with a few members of the Branch Teaching Class, Charlie introduced the group of 30 Swing Dancers to Scottish Country Dancing and in no time flat, they were Reeling! It was AMAZING! Fingers crossed that maybe some of these (20-30 year old) dancers will join the Branch. One more thought, the March social is on March 21- 8pm – A St Patrick Day Theme is planned. Of course, most of all…and don't forget….have FUN, FUN, FUN! Submissions of articles and photos are welcomed. I’m trying hard – I really am, There’s so much to remember. Everyone’s very helpful And tells me what to do, But I get mixed up with my sexes, When ladies are men, wouldn’t you? I know the experienced dancers, It’s very easy to spot ’em. They gaily stand at the top of the set And I slink down to the bottom. And when it’s reels we are doing I’m soon a total loss, There’s reels of four and reels of three, Reels down and reels across. I keep one eye on the teacher And one on the rest of the set, I try to watch my partner as well, But haven’t succeeded yet. There even are diagonal reels! But when our teacher said “Don’t do an eight bar reel in six” My brain reeled in my head! It’s very important to know the start Of the dance about to be done. If you’re not quite sure of the first eight bars You are bound to be number one. But I’m going to keep on trying, The music is lovely to hear, And maybe I’ll know which corner is which At the end of the dancing year. The cookbook that was published for the 25th was a great success. Please send your recipes to either me at [email protected] or John Bottriell at [email protected]. There are a lot of good cooks in the Branch, both women and men, so we expect an avalanche of recipes. You can definitely send in more than one.” Thanks Katie Shaw for the 50th Anniversary Committee. SCOTTISH ACCENT º SCOTCH MIST Bobby Brown was the founder of The Scottish Accent, the band that has inspired both the dancers and the listeners at our Balls every year since 1978. Bobby died in 2011. In 2014 we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Festival which will be held on 12th July. The Festival is held just outside Leeds on the playing fields of Gateways School in a rural setting opposite to the Harewood estate. There will be massed open air dancing for adult and junior teams, opportunities for demonstrations of pre-selected dances and ladies' and men's Highland displays, and an evening social dance. Dancing will be to Luke Brady and his Scottish Dance Band with piping from Alan Harrison. Ian Slater will play for the juniors if the event is held indoors because of wet weather. Full details of the dances and additional information can be found at http://tinyurl.com/owonk3e or contact our Secretary Irene Dracup: [email protected] Dancers coming to the UK for St Andrew's Summer School might like to call in on their way to Scotland and enjoy a brief stay in Yorkshire, and those visiting for the Tour de France Grand Depart or Yorkshire Festival of 100 days of art and cultural events might like to stay on and enjoy an opportunity to dance. If you can't make up a team but would still like to come let us know and we will make arrangements for you to dance with other groups. If you have already made your plans for this year and can't fit in the Festival, why not put it in your diary for next year- 11th July 2015 when the band will again be Luke Brady and his Scottish Dance Band. Leeds is a vibrant city with stylish shopping, breathtaking architecture including the Leeds Town Hall, Corn Exchange and the Victoria Quarter alongside world-class museums and galleries such as the Royal Armouries museum, Leeds Art Gallery and Leeds City Museum.
