Les capitaines sont des élèves de CM1 et CM2 désireux d’améliorer leurs compétences en leadership et de travail d'équipe en aidant leurs camarades à organiser des jeux coopéra fs. Les élèves intéressés ont remplit une demande de mo va on, qui incluait une référence posi ve d'un enseignant. Les Capitaines de Jeux doivent démontrer un bon esprit, un bon comportement et conserver un bon rendement scolaire. The “Junior Coach Program” is one of the main components of a successful Playworks school. Junior Coaches are 4th & 5th grade students interested in improving their leadership and teamwork skills by helping other students play games and work together. Interested students completed an applica on, which included a posi ve reference from a teacher. Junior Coaches must uphold strong character, good behavior, and academic performance. L’importance accordée à l’engagement des élèves au sein de la communauté n’est toutefois par une nouveauté au LFSF. En fait, le lycée peut même s’enorgueillir d’une coopéra on de longue date avec une société de bienfaisance locale. Il y plus de 15 ans, Françoise Gorfain, membre de la communauté du LFSF, a pris contact avec Martha Ryan, du Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) afin de me re sur pied un projet scolaire impliquant élèves et familles dans des projets de service communautaire pour appuyer l’ac on du HPP. À l’origine, modeste et impliquant qu’une seule classe, le projet s’est d’abord étendu à tout un campus, puis au Lycée tout en er toutes classes et campus confondus. Martha Ryan vient tous les ans parler à nos élèves des communautés dans le besoin. Ce e con nuité des projets donne aux yeux de nos élèves un sens par culier à ce e rela on. Ils posent à Martha des ques ons tout à fait per nentes qui révèlent une maturité croissante dans la compréhension de problèmes réels et complexes.Ce e présenta on annuelle a lancé notre « ac on gâteaux » à l’occasion de Thanksgiving au cours de laquelle élèves et familles apportent une quan té incroyable de gâteaux pour compléter les repas de familles, qui autrement auraient dû s’en passer. L’hiver voit une autre ac on prendre le relais, où élèves et familles organisent des collectes de livres, vêtements ou paniers garnis pour nouveau-nés au profit du HPP. Ce e année, en reconnaissance de ce e longue associa on avec LFSFet toute la communauté des parents et enseignants, HPP a décidé d’honorer le Lycée au cours du gala annuel qui se endra à 2500 18th street, San Francisco (Potrero Hill). Le Lycée y sera représenté à la fois par des parents et des membres de l’administra on. Nous sommes bien entendus très fiers et honorés d’être associés à si noble cause. Mais sur une note plus personnelle, nous tenons à adresser nos remerciements à Martha Ryan d’avoir choisi précisément ce e année pour honorer le Lycée en reconnaissance de l’ac on de Françoise Gorfain. The need to have students involved with their community in service learning projects is a subject that has received a fair amount of a en on in the educa onal world over the last few years. The importance of community engagement for stu‐ dents is not however a new concept for the LFSF. In fact, the Lycée is par cularly proud of one of its long‐ me partner‐ ships with a local charity. Over 15 years ago, the Lycée’s very own, Francoise Gorfain linked with Homeless Prenatal Pro‐ gram’s (HPP), Martha Ryan to offer a school project that would involve students and families in community service pro‐ grams to support HPP’s efforts. It started out small but has grown from a class project, to a campus project, to a school wide effort involving all grades from all campuses. Every year, Martha Ryan comes to speak to our students about communi es in need. The ongoing nature of the project creates a special bond and meaning for our students who always have wonderful ques ons for Martha and we see their understanding of some very real and complex issues evolve and mature with me. This yearly talk launches our Thanksgiving pie drive where students and families bring in an incredible number of pies to help complete meals for families who would normally go without. Another program happens around the winter holidays where students and families support a gi drive to collect books, clothes or newborn baskets for the HPP organiza on. This year, HPP in recogni on of our long me partnership with LFSF families and faculty, have decided to honor the Lycée at their annual gala celebra on to be held at 2500 18th street, San Francisco (Potrero Hill). We will have representa ves from the Lycée (both parents and staff). We are of course very proud and honored to be associated with such a worth‐ while cause. But on a very personal and sen mental note, would like to thank Martha Ryan for choosing THIS par cular year to honor the Lycée in recogni on of Francoise Gorfain who will be re ring this year, a er 25 years at the Lycée, and without whom this project would never have taken hold. La course avait lieu dans le Golden Gate Park à Li le Rec, elle a duré 12 minutes et les enfants ont pu parcourir plusieurs tours. Ils avaient fait appel à des sponsors, parents, amis, voisins, qui à chaque tour accompli, par cipaient financièrement pour l’associa on. Leora Mutricy, une élève de terminale du Lycée est venue expliquer le projet à nos étudiants le principe de l’associa on et les élèves avaient à coeur de courir pour l’associa on, qui aide d’autres élèves dans le monde. Bravo aux élèves, aux parents accompagnateurs et à Leora Mutricy (organisatrice), la course était géniale. This Monday, May 12, students of The Lycée 3rd to 5th grades par cipated in a race in favor of an associa on "Free the Children". The run took place in the Golden Gate Park at Li le Rec, me of the event was 12 minutes and the children were able to run several laps. They had contacted sponsors, parents, friends, neighbors, that each lap completed, par cipated financially to the associa on. Leora Mutricy, a high school senior from The Lycée came in our school to explain the project, the principle of the associa on and the students had to run for a good reason, for the associa on, which helps other students in the world. Congratula on to the students, to the chaperons and Leora Mutricy (race organizer), the run was amazing ! 19 mai CP CE1 dans la cour d’Ashbury LAPATHON Les Chroniques d’Ashbury May 16th, 2014 #14 Page 13 As you probably know already, at the Lycée Français of San Francisco, we spearheaded a project 4 years ago that became a school pedagogical project. Our group of children (between 15 and 20 right now) has partnered with an organiza on called Free the Children, out of Toronto, Canada, to "Adopt a Village" in Hai , raising funds to build a school, establish a potable water system, enable sustainability for parents of students, and provide medical supply access. They needed to raise $25,000 to reach all those pillars for the first village and they are nearly there. In 3 years, they raised $21,000 through bake sales, arts and cra s sales, crêpe sales at school, bake sales at offices and the Angel Island Tiburon Ferry dock, partnerships with companies that helped us, such as PlumpJack Group, etc. and last year they put together a Talent Show at the School, which proved to be a great fund raiser for their project. This month, a student from 12th grade, Leora Mutricy is organizing a run for Free The Children at the school on two campuses, Asbury and Ortega for students from 1st to 8th grade. Those lapathons will give your children an opportunity to par cipate to the project by raising money for the run for FTC through pledges . The Lapathon on Ortega Campus will be on May 6th and on May 12 and 19 on Asbury campus. Free the Children Free the Children is a by youth, for youth organiza on founded in 1995 by then 12 year old Craig Kielburger on the belief that young people have the power to change the world and that the key to awakening that power is through educa on. The primary goals of the organiza on are to free children from poverty and exploita on and free young people from the no on that they are powerless to affect posi ve change in the world. Since 1995, Free the Children has built more than 650 schools in developing regions affording daily educa on to more than 55,000 children, provided $16 million worth of medical supplies to marginalized communi es, enabled access to clean water, health care and improved sanita on facili es to over one million people and helped more than 30,000 women become economically self-sufficient with loans and alterna ve sources of income. All this at an amazing 9% administra on rate Early on, Craig and Free the Children realized that in order for all children in a given village to go to school, they’d have to remove the barriers to educa on that existed there. They would have to support not only the village’s schools, but the en re village. With that, Free the Children’s holis c “Adopt a Village” development model was born. The Adopt a Village model is made of four components that are crucial to sustainable community development: educa on, health care, clean water and alterna ve income. Many children in developing countries can’t a end school because their parents need them to work to supplement the family income. But, by providing that family with alterna ve forms of genera on income, like a tailoring business or breeding cow, the child no longer has to work and is free to a end school. Other children may have the financial freedom to go to school, but have illnesses that prevent them from doing so. Free the Children’s health care projects help those children get well and become students again! The Adopt a Village model is implemented within several countries, including rural China, Ecuador, India, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka and Hai .
