Prominent among the many kitchen ideas
seen at Milan – all of them displaying an
extremely high level of design quality – were
some very noticeable examples of some
quite daring furnishing schemes – ones that
that were a little more offbeat than we might
expect.
Not only did they display an “alternativeminded” approach in terms of composition,
material or functionality, but they also
often carried the signature of a big designer
making his or her debut in the field of kitchen
design. Take, for example, the kitchen
designed by Patricia Urquiola with Salinas,
for Boffi, who presented a jigsaw puzzle
of new materials to round off the volumes
created by a metal framework; or Oki Sato
of Studio Nendo with Ki, for Scavolini, the
creator of a single-material, one-colour
solution whose storage element becomes
the formal prototype for the definition of
the components.
Another example is the design by the C+S
architecture studio, which created for Elmar
a series of super objects with an instantly
recognisable character.
For this round-up of this exciting new
development, we have grouped the products
into four main themes, sub-divisions that
make the trend easier to interpret.

PATRICIA URQUIOLA SHUNS TRADITIONAL DESIGN SCHEMES ON SALINAS, A NEW IDEA FOR
BOFFI FEATURING A TUBULAR METAL STRUCTURE AND SOME UNEXPECTED MATERIALS
A FREE APPROACH

Salinas, a new design for Boffi
by Patricia Urquiola.

BOFFI
5
Salinas brings with it a whole
new approach to kitchen
furniture design. This model,
designed by Patricia Urquiola
for Boffi is inspired by a
passion for materials, a love
of restraint and simplicity of
construction and a strong
sense of proportion. An
eco-sustainable and highly
innovative system, which,
like a true work of modern
architecture, features a
distinct support structure
clad in what is a quite unique
combination of materials:
metal, ceramic and even
lava. Patricia Urquiola applies
to the design a “signature”
patterning of her own
that gives the surface an
interesting textural effect and
a touch of artistic flair.
CREATIVE COMPOSITIONS
The main innovation
introduced on this kitchen
concept is the construction
technique: rather than
comprising the traditional
chipboard units, Salinas has
a square-section tubular
metal structure (3x3 cm)
that makes it possible to
produce a range of elaborate
structures.
The storage and functional
elements created in this
way, and which can be wallmounted or free-standing, are
finished off with fronts made
from a matt black anodised
aluminium framework and
cladding panels that come in
ambientecucina
project
a selected range of materials
with a special “appeal”: metal
with copper finish, aluminium,
brass, zinc, vibrated
aluminium; lacquerwork or
lacquered cement, wood and
Paperstone ®, a composite
material made from recycled
paper and cardboard. For
the tops, Dekton ® ceramic,
cement, stone, solid wood and
lava with exclusive patterning.
Salinas has shelves rather
than wall units as such.
Other characteristic details
include the channel inserted
into the top to house the
installations, a handy place
to keep things that creates
à www.boffi.com
additional storage space and
even a small hothouse with
drainage incorporated into the
channel. To this can be added
a system of metal shelves
with built-in LED lighting.
The large stone sink and
pier-style wood tables add
a further warm, personal
touch to the kitchen.
And finally, with just a simple
“click”, the wooden top can
be rotated diagonally and
turn into a dining table to seat
four.
The large solid wood cutting board
with rounded corners on Salinas
doubles as a snack-bar.

CHROMATIC INTERPLAY
SCHIFFINI
Pampa combines the concept of the
base unit, inspired by traditional kitchen
design, with a series open storage units
of different sizes, lacquered in bright
colours, elements that are included
to provide a striking visual contrast
to the rest of the composition.
Another feature of Pampa is the delicate
groove-style handle hollowed out
of the veneer, which adds an extra
three-dimensional quality.

ELMAR

centres around a number of independent elements with a strong
character: a large wooden table with cooking area; an organ-style hood

diffusion; a dresser; a larder unit; a glasshouse; a bookcase.

W75: illuminated

9
W75 is a system built on
the concept of richness: in
terms of its materials, its
finishes and the construction
technique used to build it.
Stone, treated wood, special
metals and a skilful use of
light make W75 a quite unique
system in an extremely
elegant composition. The
worked cabinet fronts are 26
mm thick and have diamondedged profiles that distinguish
the set of separate door
panels. The horizontal profiles
are also diamond-edged,
creating the grooves used
to open the door, access to
them being assisted by the
slanting edge of the worktop.
Its creator Massimo Castagna
has once again come up with a
product that exudes elegance,
focusing on the interplay
between different materials,
thicknesses and details. This
adds a touch of refinement
to the volumes on W75, and
ambientecucina
project
generates a sense of richness,
yet restraint.
PERSONALISING
AND STANDING APART
On the Rossana stand,
W75 was presented with the
luxurious finishes of Atelier
Collection for a personalised
kitchen. On this occasion, W75
was seen clad with fronts in
dark, heat-treated eucalyptus
with worktop in semi-polished
Breche Nouvelle stone, and
fitted with special storage
units that can be used on all
Rossana models. One example
is the illuminated wall unit
with unframed tempered glass
fronts, combining burnished
brass on the outside with
wood on the inside, available
also in lacquerwork. Others
include the open units on the
worktop, with stone back, or
the coloured glass cabinets
finished in burnished brass. To
say nothing of the magnificent
free-standing cabinet, in wood
and glass, and the hood that
descends from the ceiling,
only when required.

TEAM 7
11
The undying beauty of
natural solid wood returns to
prominence as the chosen
material for Team 7’s kitchen
collection, with the new model
it presented at Eurocucina 2014:
Loft. Designed by Sebastian
Desch, Loft expresses the
excellence that can be
achieved in working wood,
a skill on which this Austrian
firm has built the strength of
its brand.
Founded 55 years ago for the
production of furniture in wood
(which it made its vocation),
Team 7 uses only timber from
broad-leafed trees grown
sustainably in managed forests,
and just seven types of wood:
walnut, cherry, oak, maple, wild
beech, beech and alder.
The version on display at
the Milan fair was made of
wild walnut, and featured
a magnificent island that
suggested a convivial way of
enjoying the kitchen space,
with the passion for good dining

mirrored in the tasteful,
high-quality furnishings.
MATERIALS AND DETAILS
Formal restraint and authentic
materials: these are the two
aspects that come together
to make Loft, a model in the
urban country style. Solid wood
and cement come together in
a design that displays extreme
attention to detail, with sleek
contouring and hi-tech features.
The ultra-functional island unit
has a sink and cooktop set into
the work surface, along with a
solid wood cutting board, and
underneath has generous open
shelving, designed as a space
in which to display tableware
and ornaments, and an ideal
element to interface the island
and the rest of the kitchen
with a living area. The wall
composition is enhanced with
special elements that offer a
high level of ergonomic: the
smoked glass front of the wall
unit slides open vertically, the
lighting is LED, the tall unit is a
pull-out system. Loft also offers
a number of small containers
for herbs and utensils, made
of steel or one of the seven
Team 7 timbers.
In common with all Team 7
kitchens, Loft is also available
with glass fronts and worktops
in quartz, ceramic, granite,
cement.

A NEW BRAND, BVA, DRAWS ON
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE TO PRODUCE

GREAT CHARACTER AND QUALITY AND
ARCHITECTURAL FLAIR TO THE KITCHEN.

One of the most interesting
presences at Milan was surely
that of new brand BVA, the
brainchild of Antonio Arangiaro
created with the technological
know-how of well-established
brand Binova. Three models
were presented, each with a
personality of its own, but all
displaying the same highly
tailored look and the utmost
attention to detail. First of all
Scava, whose design features
three materials that blend the
exquisite with the hi-tech: sawn,
brushed silver oak used for the
cabinet doors, satin-finish 18/10
stainless steel for the tall units
and Fokos Piombo lamigress
for the worktop. The handle is
hollowed out of the depth of the
front, highlighting its thickness:
the worktop has a drip-catching
edge. With its professional
laboratory-like functionality,
Fuga stands out for its totally
coherent aesthetic restraint.
Produced in a single colour –
total white – Fuga comprises
a rear base unit space broken
up into a series of functional
storage units of different sizes.
ambientecucina

The handles are hidden away
inside the fronts, cleverly
reappearing when needed – a
design detail that exemplifies
the care and attention the firm
has lavished on the model.A
handle incorporated vertically
into a front made of rosewood is
the distinctive graphic feature
of Vogue, whose doors have a
glossy Ink Blue lacquered finish.
à www.bvadesign.it
The firm’s advanced know-
how is also expressed through
the sliding top (also made of
rosewood) on the island unit.
A simple control retracts the
top to reveal the cooking and
washing areas and create a
snack bar. Wood is also used
for the storage units, which
are accessed directly from the
worktop, in 6mm-thick Ice finish
steel.
