Diana Bueno-Gutierrez is a Professor at the Universidad Autónoma
de Baja California (UABC) in Tijuana, México where she obtained her
MD. She recently graduated from UC Davis with a PhD in Nutritional
Biology with emphasis in International and community nutrition.
Diana’s research interests focus on improving nutritional status and
preventing disease in low-income populations by using nutrition and
health education to promote breastfeeding, maternal-infant nutrition,
prevention of obesity, as well as work in improving economic and
social determinants of health such as the elimination of violence
against women. In particular, she is drawn to the translation of
medical science benefits to underserved populations in order to
reduce health disparities. Currently, she is working on developing a
community-based intervention to promote breastfeeding at the
Mexico-USA border.

Artificially), to restore and normalize breastfeeding within the African
American Community. Currently she works for the West Oakland
Health Council’s WIC program and Health Center as the

Organization (MEW): a non-profit whose mission is to improve
the health and wellness of diverse communities. MEW works to
reduce disparities in breastfeeding by creating culturally
sensitive/supportive trainings and baby showers that include
partners and grandparents. To reduce the gap in
initiation/continuation of breastfeeding among African American
families, MEW has engaged the African American faith
community to create an environment to educate/ support
families in their infant feeding choices. With the collaboration of
faith and health entities peers are trained to offer one-on-one
counseling to pregnant/breastfeeding women as well as how to
access medical, economic, social, cultural and breastfeeding
resources. Dr. Sims-Harper is the Regional Breastfeeding
Liaison for Contra Costa County where she coordinates
physician-trainings, identifies local breastfeeding obstacles,
gaps, goal objectives and builds collaboration to meet goals,
bridge breastfeeding support and decrease disparities.
