Two presentations by Richard Whittaker.
The combination of drought, heatwave and highly inflammable
eucalypt forest makes parts of NSW and Victoria the most bushfire
prone in the world. In this presentation we look at all these factors
and how they contribute to the massively dangerous bushfires that
occasionally erupt during summer. We also review the progress
we are making in predicting these outbreaks and the evolving
methods of fighting them.

The photography of Henry King and Charles Kerry.
The first photograph of Sydney dates back to 1841 when the city
was barely 50 years old. Sydney and the camera virtually grew up
together and the photographic record that exists today provides a
marvellous storyline to the development of the city. During the
19th century two Sydney photographers rose to prominence.
Henry King and Charles Kerry were among the earliest to move
away from the portraiture of the studio and out into city streets.
The views they captured of Sydney in the gaslight era provide a
priceless historical record of old Sydney.
A presentation by Stephen Carter on behalf of Lend Lease
The Pacific Highway is being upgraded right on our doorsteps and
we are fascinated as hills are levelled and bridges arise from
ground level. But how is it all done: just how much dirt has to be
shifted and where will it go, what are all the materials used, how is
a bridge constructed from whoa to go? Stephen Carter B.Eng
(civiI), Senior Project Engineer for Lend Lease, will describe how
this all happens.
A presentation by Judy Hassall
Judy Hassall’s father, Archie Barwick, was a farmer who enlisted
in 1914, at the age of 24. He fought at Gallipoli, winning the Croix
de Guerre, and served in France and Belgium. Judy will tell us of
his life in the Great War, learned from 16 pocket-sized diaries
which offer a compelling, often gripping narrative penned by a
natural storyteller.
A presentation by Kerryn Higgs
Remember Easter Island? Over a 1000 year period islanders
carved more and more statues each year, statues that are so like
Malcolm Fraser that we dub them Malcolm Frasers. No problem
with that. They had lots of stone; however, they moved the statues
from quarries to erection site over trunks. The more statues that
they carved each year, the more trees they felled to move the
statues and after a while they had no trees, they could not make
fishing boats and had no fish to eat and they died.
Kerryn Higgs, author of the book “Collision Course. Endless
growth on a finite planet” believes that the Western world is
headed for an Easter Island fate. Kerryn will show us how we can
avoid this future.
