SUMMER 2014
XMAS HOURS
EVENT
VE VETS ATTEND
POOCH RACING
GOING ON HOLIDAY?
SUNDAY 2ND NOVEMBER
It was a fun day for all involved - with breed
specific races such as Fittest Terriers, Petite
Paws, Speedsters and the Woofa’s Cup. VE
vets sponsored the “VE Vets Velocity Race”
which saw all kinds of dogs from Chihuahuas
to Great Danes compete. There were also
non-racing events such as the “Owner and
Pooch look-a-like” and “Rex factor” and
agility displays from the Cambridge Agility
group. We thoroughly enjoyed being part of
such a fun and worthwhile day
• Ensure your pets are up to date with
vaccination and their certificate is current
• If they require a booster allow at least
2 weeks before boarding (more if the
vaccines have lapsed)
• Also ensure flea control is applied to
prevent them bringing home un eaten
friends
• Make sure you stock up on food and
medications before your holiday

In November the second annual
Pooch Racing event was held in
Cambridge. This was a community
event to help raise money
and awareness for non-profit
organisations dedicated to helping
animals.
KITTY HEALTH
KOOL KITTENS
The staff at VE vets want to help you raise a
happy, healthy and well behaved kitten who
enjoys trips to the vets. Too often our adult cat
patients are stressed by coming to the clinic making it unpleasant for them and their vets!
This can mean that giving treatments becomes
a negative experience for them and a difficult
task for us. Our dedicated nurses have started
a Kool Kitten Club which provides FREE clinics
for your kitten. Clinics include socialisation,
husbandry, handling, nutrition and total wellbeing. Members of the Kool Kitten Club will
also benefit from FREE flea treatments, toys,
health checks and food samples, as well as
discounted de-sexing, booster vaccinations and
micro-chipping. Please phone the clinic to book
your kitten in.
FIV IN CATS
GO IN THE DRAW TO WIN $75 BACK!
One lucky customer who completes the FIV
course in their cat will win back $75. Offer
available until the end of February 2015.
New Zealand is a country with high levels of FIV in
the cat population ranging from 7% in healthy cats to
27% in sick cats.
FIV (the feline form of HIV) is the precursor to
cat AIDs, and is spread via bite wounds from an
FIV positive cat. All cats with outdoor access are
ultimately at risk of contracting FIV - cats that fight
regularly are at a particularly high risk. There is no
treatment or cure for an FIV infected cat.
While some infected cats show no obvious signs of
disease, others may display weight loss, painful gums
and dental disease, eye lesions, chronic infections,
cancer or neurological disease. As happens in AIDS,
the immune system becomes too weak to fight off
infections eventually resulting in death.
Vaccination is the only way to prevent contracting
FIV and we recommend it for all cats and kittens with
outdoor access. There is a vaccine available which
requires three doses at 2-4 week intervals to build
immunity, which must be followed up with annual
boosters to maintain the best
chance of protection.
The FIV vaccine is safe and effective. Talk with
your veterinarian today about making sure your cat
has the best vaccination program in place to provide
protection against all preventable diseases
including FIV.
ORAL FLEA PRODUCTS
WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
There are now several oral (tablet form) flea control products. Although it can
be unnerving to think you are giving you pet something orally which is used to
control pests on their outside – it is actually quite reassuring to know that these
products are extremely safe.
Comfortis has been on the market for over a year now and we rarely see any side effects. Its
active ingredient Spinosad was discovered naturally occurring in soil microbes. Similarly, the
active ingredient in Nexgard (Afoxalaner) is derived from a compound found in sea molluscs.
The advantages of these products is their fast kill-time on fleas and the fact they can’t wash off
like some topical products. Here is a rundown of the products we stock in the clinic:
