Will you help change the life for one animal?
What if My Cat Tests Positive for FIV?
If your cat has a positive test for feline AIDS, it simply means that he
has been exposed to the virus. Your cat is a potential carrier of the
disease and the possibility that he could pass the disease to other
cats exists. A positive feline AIDS test does not mean that your cat
is dying from the disease though. Many cats with positive tests live
perfectly normal lives if steps are taken to protect them from secondary disease. If your cat tests positive for FIV, he can still live for
a long time if you take some simple precautions. Remember that
a cat that tests positive for the feline immunodeficiency virus may
have a weakened immune system and may be susceptible to other
infections as a result. Protect your cat from these secondary infections by following these suggestions.
* Keep your cat indoors.
* Have your cat examined by your veterinarian at least twice a year.
Your veterinarian will examine your cat and perform routine blood
tests.
* Do not feed your cat raw meat or eggs.
* Have your cat spayed or neutered.FIV is passed by direct contact, usually by unaltered males fighting for females and males to
females during the mating process
* Keep your cat free of parasites. Fleas, ticks, heartworms and intestinal worms are parasites that should be avoided.
* Keep your cat up-to-date on his vaccinations.
* Some veterinarians recommend keeping your FIV positive cat
segregated from other cats in the household. This would be most
important if the cats fight.
* Seek veterinary help quickly if your cat becomes sick.
In the past, cats that tested positive for the feline immunodeficiency
virus were frequently euthanized because it was believed that their
prognosis was grave and they were a serious threat to the rest of
the feline population. Studies show that euthanasia is no longer
recommended for cats testing positive for FIV.
Though the feline AIDS virus may be potentially contagious to other
cats, it is not a threat to people.
Marcy is a kitten, Buddy and Lincoln are 6
years old. They are all FIV+ and waiting for
adoption at Cats Angels.
Well good day to all my peeps. I hope this column finds you all
rested and ready for spring. I wanted to touch on a subject this time
that is very important to me…declawing
Not many years ago pet owners didn’t think twice about having their
feline friends declawed, but in this modern age we know the long
term effects of such a drastic procedure. In layman’s terms de-clawing is the amputation of the last joint on the toe. It is the equal of
a human having the last segment of their finger removed. Doesn’t
sound very appealing now does it?
Life Lessons
from Lydia
“Medical drawbacks to declawing include pain,
infection, tissue necrosis (tissue death), lameness, and back pain. Removing claws changes
the way a cat’s foot meets the ground and can
cause pain similar to wearing an uncomfortable
pair of shoes. There can also be a regrowth of
improperly removed claws, nerve damage, and
bone spurs.”
American Humane Society 1-2-14
Teach your kitty from a young age to use a scratching post or similar item. Make it fun for the little darlings.
Place their favorite treats around the base of the post. Many felines enjoy a pinch of catnip sprinkled on
the scratching post. And remember that letting kitty scratch the old ugly couch in the den and then freaking out when they scratch the pretty new one in the living room send mixed signals. Be consistant….NO
FURNITURE. Several inexpensive scratching posts should be sufficient. And remember to change them
out for new ones when they become tattered and worn.
If you need help with training tips the humans here at Cats Angels will be glad to assist with more ideas,
just pick up the phone and give them a ring.
Well must run now my sweets. Remember to spay and neuter your pets and give them lots of love
Meeeeeeeeeeeeooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww,
Miss Lydia

Farewell to Friends
Pat and Ellen are two ladies who have made a big impact on the
Cats Angels organization over the past year. They are pulling up
stakes in sunny Florida and heading north to Ohio with their animals
in tow. Our volunteers and the cats always looked forward to their
visits to the Thrift Store/Adoption Center and they never left without
leaving catnip and other treats for all their furry friends. They have
given Cats Angels so much support and generous donations. But,
they will always be remembered in our hearts for their kindness and
compassion by giving our blind cat Stefano such a wonderful, loving
home and their commitment to his ongoing care. We wish them
only the best in their new adventure. We know this is not Goodbye,
just So Long!

Gus, a little gray kitten, is settling down for a nap
with his new buddy.
The Bulldogs weren’t the only winners
on FL-GA Weekend. Eleven of our cats
and kittens were adopted at Petsmart
on game day including Juno, a sweet
orange and white kitten with one eye.
His forever family says he is the greatest addition and a wonderful cat!
Swan, now called Bella, was always
ready to model when a camera was near.
I think we can detect a bit of a smile as
she is certainly a bright star with her new
forever family. She was also one of 42
cats who founds homes in December!
It’s all good news when a FIV+ kitty like Guntther
finds a forever home.

HOW YOUR DONATIONS HELP CATS ANGELS SAVE LIVES
A call came into Cats Angels about a orange cat who had been injured. His left rear
leg was broken, the bone was protruding and it had been like that several days. No
other rescue groups or shelters would help except to euthanize him. Cats Angels
stepped in to relieve his suffering and with the help of First Coast No More Homeless
Pets his leg was amputated. Jasper is now waiting for his forever home at the Cats
Angels Adoption Center.
TuTu’s story is unbelievably sad because
she was in her adoptive family for over 2
years. They asked us to take their declawed
cat back because she was afraid of the kids,
stayed under the bed and wasn’t using her
litterbox. We saw immediately that things weren’t right with TuTu and a vet exam and tests
revealed a bacterial infection in both ears, bladder stones, a urinary tract infection and the
joints in her rear legs (knees) were dislocating and prevented her from walking normally.
One of these would be bad enough to cause TuTu pain. After getting her ears and UTI under
control, TuTu made a visit to the vet orthopedic surgeon at the Clay County Humane Society
who said “we have to fix this.” Tutu had surgery in early February. She is able to walk, but
the abuse by denial of vet care caused her disability to be permanent. We will keep you
posted on TuTu’s recovery.
We can provide Jasper, TuTu and those like them with medical treatment, love, care
and a safe place to live until they find a “forever” homes only with your help and donations.
Thank you for supporting Cats Angels and helping us save lives.
