January was the start of our show season. One down and two more to go. The Ultimate Fishing Show turned out great thanks to some members doing double shifts, double days, and even triple days. We had a great speaker for January, Roger Hinchcliff from Metro-West. Great job Roger! He sure knows how to catch those steelhead. I was scheduled to attend our annual state meeting for chapter presidents in Lansing on January 17th but due to the passing of one of my best friends ,Doug, was unable to. RIP Doug, you will be missed. Our own Mich-Ohio Expo is the 7th & 8th of February. We still need help. Outdoorama is scheduled for February 26th thru March 1st..We need at least 36 members. This is the last chance we have to raise funds for the coming year. We will pay your parking, we can work around your schedules, and you can bring your wife, girlfriend, son, or daughter as we can really use their help. Now I cannot make it any better. Free entry. free parking and you get to walk around and see the show. My phone number is still the same as last month. 734-497-4187. I would like to say a “BIG THANK YOU!” to all the members and their wives, mothers, and grand-daughter that helped make the Ultimate Show a success. YOU PEOPLE ROCK! Thank you. See you at our Mich-Ohio Expo Ron Delk February Speaker Captain Matthew Sell Tips and Tactics for jigging the Detroit River Captain Matt guides on " The D" for 6 weeks every year. He will be sharing info on the equipment, tactics and locations that he uses to keep his clients happy. Page 4 Huron Valley Sportfishing Club GREAT LAKES NEWS Lawmakers Introduce Bipartisan Act to Protect the Great Lakes from Asian Carp Asian carp remain one of the greatest threats to the Great Lakes, and lawmakers recently introduced bills in both the US Senate and House to further safeguard the region from the invasive fish. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Representatives Dave Camp (R-MI) and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) introduced the Guarding Our Great Lakes Act last week, which will direct the efforts of federal agencies towards vulnerable waterways in Illinois. “The Great Lakes are part of our way of life and fuel our economy,” said Senator Stabenow in a joint press release. “We must stop them from being destroyed by Asian carp and other invasive species. This is an emergency, and the time has come for decisive action before it’s too late. This bill will call on the Army Corps [of Engineers] to begin work on projects that will help prevent the spread of Asian carp and require the Great Lakes Interagency Task Force to move us closer toward a long-term, permanent solution that will keep Asian carp out of our Lakes for good.” The bills call for the Great Lakes Interagency Task Force, which is made up of 11 federal agencies, to work with state and local departments to find a permanent solution in keeping Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. The bill also focuses specifically on the Brandon Road Lock and Dam in Joliet, Illinois. The dam is only five miles downstream from the electric barriers keeping carp out of the canal and is one of the most vulnerable spots in the region. However, the Associated Press reported that experts also view it as a vital choke point to prevent the carp from entering the Great Lakes. The bill will reinforce the site, which according to the US Army Corps of Engineers may include additional electric barriers or a new type of lock to treat water for carp eggs. “After years of study, we must begin making tangible progress to safeguard the Great Lakes ecosystem and the $7 billion economy it supports – and that is exactly what this bill would do,” said Representative Camp. “The Guarding Our Great Lakes Act would take the next necessary actions to prevent the spread of Asian carp. Focusing control efforts at Brandon Road Lock and Dam and beginning to improve the Chicago Area Waterway System are vital steps that need to be taken as we continue working to find a permanent solution.” Asian carp are an aggressive, adaptable, and fast-growing group of invasive species that can outcompete native fish and push them out of the ecosystem. Since the first Asian carp escaped aquaculture farms in the early 1970s, the fish has spread widely across the Mississippi River and now are close to entering the Great Lakes. Earlier this year, the US Army Corps of Engineers proposed a number of methods to prevent the fish from entering the lake system, with some options costing as much as $18 billion over a span of 25 years. “The federal government’s response to invasive species over the years has largely been reactive, not proactive, and we have paid a dear price,” said Representative Slaughter. “We have to take this problem head on, which is why I’m proud to introduce with my colleagues the Guarding Our Great Lakes Act— to stop Asian Carp before they destroy the native ecosystems of our beloved Great Lakes. Eade Dennis is working on the November edition of GLSFN. An article about our MSSFA President, (Ken Merckel) receiving the Pistas Award from the Michigan Charter Boat Association will be included. This is the highest of MCBA awards given to someone who exemplifies a career of dedication to the preservation of Michigan natural resources. 2015 advertising agreements for the GLSFN continue to be distributed. Big Jon signed on for a full pager in the show edition. Met with attorneys (Steve Schultz, Chris Patterson) of the Amici group and was impressed by their knowledge about achieving an equitable final agreement with the tribes. I met with the new executive director of MUCC (Dan Eichinger) to share our concerns about advocating for the fisheries with the legislature and the DNR. I also met with Michigan Sea Grant Extension Educator (Dan O'Keefe) to seek assistance with facilitating our strategic planning process. The MUCC Conservation Coalition met with DNR deputy director (Bill Moritz) and DNR staff on October 22nd. An invasive species initiative will receive $5 million in FY 2015 from the general fund. $3.6 million is available for FY 2014 grant cycle. The due date for FY 2015 applications is Dec.5, 2014. Moritz committed to providing a comprehensive DNR budget report at the January NRC meeting. There is keen interest in how the new DNR licensing program and funding mechanisms are shaking out. The Michigan Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Development will apply for $88 million in federal funds to finance 6 proposals in the new "Regional Conservation Partnership Program" that was part of the federal Farm Bill. Some of the proposals could help to mitigate the agricultural runoff that is polluting streams and watersheds. Fall returns for Chinook and Coho were down significantly and 3 year olds were nearly nonexistent. What is left of the 2010 and 2012 alewife classes is all there is to eat. The 2011, 2013, and 2014 alewife classes were dismal. Forage base fish are not able to sustain themselves without zooplankton. The available zooplankton is being consumed by a mass of Quagga mussels blanketing the lake bottom. There is a new molluskacide called Equanox that creates a fatal bacterium in mussels but does not harm other aquatic organisms. Unfortunately, it is prohibitively expensive to treat large areas of a lake bottom. Pot Shots From the Editor. We depend on this show for promoting our club and getting new members while sharing our interests in fishing and the outdoors. We need the support of everyone in order to make this event a success and although we seem to have plenty of help at the event we do not get much interest in the planning stages. There is a need for help in getting new vendors and sponsors and finding ways to promote the event (advertising) These are things that everyone could and should help with if we are going to be successful in this endeavor.
