OMG….OMG….OMG….
You guys sure make it hard for Lady Bitch-a-lot to come out. I am soooooo proud of you
all. First you made a great showing for Shrimp R Us. Even though it was cold and damp,
you made the effort. Sure was good food, wasn't it?
Then came the CHAPTER CONFERENCE. Well not so o o good, but what with Charlie
and Joann Davies, Harry and I, Richard and Linda Mitts and Bill Harris. The conference
was interesting this year, because instead of people going to separate classes, there were
lectures concerning all the GW jobs. It was a totally open forum. We got to hear what everyone else was doing and learned a little about what their jobs entailed. Well that was everyone but Rider Ed. They still had their classes separately. But they did come and gave us
a little insight to what was going on with them. Most of all, their talk concerned the bike
ticket sales. Apparently a lot of the chapters have sold out and need more tickets. Good
for them.
The next ride was to Lakeland. That was a little bit low. Harry made that one.
(Lady Bitch-a lot is looking at you)
Then the chase was on to capture the Wanderer from the Daytona chapter. Oh my, oh
me…. 36 of you rose to the occasion. The day started out clear sunny and cold. We left
Melbourne at nine, stop for a quickie in Titusville rest area and arrived in Daytona just before eleven. The food was great, we stuffed ourselves.
But alas it was not meant to be. The Wanderer slipped from us as Georgia came in with
5000pts. We had 3000 something. But what a terrific showing for FL2D. I was so very
proud. THEN ….NOT ONLY THAT……but our chapter won both jack pots of $80
( don't tell the IRS) AND both door prizes of two $10 gift certificates. Not too shabby.
I want to thank all of those who participated . It still shows me that FL2D can still come
forward in a pinch.
Last but not least…. Our kick tire held at Ferrara…..WOW. 24 what a turn out. Needless
to say Lady Bitch-a-Lot was not there. Thanks Gang.
Looking forward to the luncheon and hope we get a good turn
out from the other chapters.
REMEMBER….watch the guy behind the guy in front of you.
That is you and we like you and want to keep you safe .

Communicating Your Intentions to Drivers
Techniques to get drivers’ attention and keep you safe
by Vicki Sanfelipo
Source: http://allstateridernews.com/ride/communicating-intentions
Communicating with drivers from your motorcycle is kind of like playing a really dangerous game of charades…with a hand or two tied behind your back. You can’t use words, you have a very limited amount of
time, and you’re left pretty much with gestures and maybe your facial expressions if you wear an open
face helmet. The drivers get to guess what message you’re trying to convey or where you’re trying to go,
only instead of playing for points you’re just trying not to get run over.
We motorcyclists have our ways to communicate with each other, but we only make up a small percentage of roadway users so not everyone knows what our hand signals mean. Even if they did know what our
hand signals meant, they might not be aware that there are many times that we cannot remove our hands
from the handlebars because one hand is operating the clutch while and the other hand the brake. Reflective gloves like these can help increase visibility of motorcyclist’s hand gestures.
Personally, I prefer to use all of the tools at my disposal to communicate my moves. For instance, when I
activate my left turn signal, I put my left arm out straight to my side to indicate a left hand turn. Of course,
as I slow down I need that hand again to operate the clutch, but the additional movement may aid in catch-
6
ing the attention of the person who may not have noticed my turn signal flashing. For a right turn, I put my left arm
out with a bend at the elbow and my hand pointed up. I usually hold only two fingers up or make a fist to ensure no
one thinks that I’m waving. If I have to slow down quickly, I remove the most visible of my hands and move my
hand, (palm down) in an up and down motion. The more frantic I flap, the faster I am stopping! I then accompany
this action by pulling slightly to one side or another so my motorcycle is in a position less likely to be hit by the
person behind me.
Always plan for an escape route in the event another vehicle does not see you. One of the most important things to
remember when communicating with other cars is to make eye contact with the driver of the other vehicle. Even
after making eye contact, I still do not assume that I have been seen or that the other driver understands my intentions. Because motorcycle riding is defensive driving at its finest, I always assume that I am not seen or that the
other driver does not understand what I am communicating to them. For that reason I watch the person’s actions.
Even though they nodded at me and indicated that I should go, I still proceed slowly, watching that person’s actions
and preparing to give up my right of way if necessary. If I get tangled up with a vehicle that is larger than mine, I’ll
be the one munched and mangled regardless of whether I was right or wrong.
I currently teach motorcycle trauma first response, and have been riding for nearly 30 years, which means I’ve
heard more than my fair share of crash stories. Almost all of them are followed up by, “There was nothing I could
do!” I could not disagree more. While we do not expect car drivers to violate our right of way and we should not
accept distracted driving as the norm, in order to prevent a crash from occurring we should do all that we can to
keep that from occurring. Making yourself visible, staying out of driver’s blind spots, exercising patience, preparing to give up your right of way if needed are all ways that we can keep our motorcycles upright and ourselves out
of harms way.
