NOTES INSPIRE NANAIMO STEERING COMMITTEE TUESDAY, 2014-FEB-11, AT 4:07 P.M. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 4:07 p.m. Sarah Lane requested that, time permitting, under Item 3a) Committee next steps be discussed. 2. PAST BUSINESS: a) Review of Notes of 2014-JAN-14 Allan Hawryzki requested clarification from last meeting on some items, including item 4 b) Speaker Series - Suzanne Samborski advised that instead of an Inspire Nanaimo speaker series, the subcommittees will work on partnerships. Daily News have instituted a Speaker Series. Inspire Nanaimo 2014-FEB-11 Page 2 The Committee reviewed the Notes and actions from the January meeting, including the sub-Committee appointments. Ignite Nanaimo – Angie Barnard provided a description of the VIU program – VIU MBA students and academia and four entrepreneurs backed the project. No agenda, dialogue at this time. Fred Brooks advised that there are four Lotto For Life per year. Agreed this is ambitious to undertake for 2014 so targeted gathering information for a 2015 Lotto for Life. 3. OTHER ITEMS a) Inspire Nanaimo Survey Results: Don Bonner to lead discussion on implications for Action 2 Working Groups: Discussion postponed to March meeting when Don available. Each group to meet and create Terms of Reference for their sub-committee. Agreed that primary target market is Nanaimo residents (positive message) create the environment to attract visitors. Strength is targeted in communications – interweave – Inspire Nanaimo pillars. Angie sought clarification on using the framework that was originally presented in June or revising it to reflect what was discussed at the workshop. Suzanne advised that it is time for the subcommittees to bring back their work to build on the frame that has been established. Inspire Nanaimo members are asked to fill out the potential partners list that Angie created through Google documents. Please have information added by February 21, 2014. There are still groups/organizations which should be added to the existing list. Agreed that members send fill out Google document or provide their key group recommendations, with reasons why they should be considered partner organizations, to the subcommittee who will consider and provide their recommendations. Dave Witty to be approached with regard to intern volunteers to put into a spreadsheet with columns for prioritization. Discussion was held regarding methods of seeking public input, creating conversations in Nanaimo residents’ homes and it was agreed that pointing them to the website was the preferred method. The defined message is Successful Cities, tied to the pillars. Our role is to support others and “package” it. Identify a defined number and find the common alignment in messages going forward. There might only be 4-5 key areas with true alignment. Agreed to look at defining profile of resources, membership and influence and report back at March meeting. Inspire Nanaimo 2014-FEB-11 Page 3 Work has been done to build on the Successful Cities pillars and the 12 key elements. Our role is to inspire organizations to be the best. Need to come with a solution, not just a complaint – vent but provide (tie to) a solution. Subcommittee to look at “Solutions Chamber”. Need to develop a Communication Strategy based on the discussion. Communications – Sub-Committee to provide an update for next meeting. Community Partnerships –Sub-Committee to provide an update for next meeting. b) Action Plan Review Tabled to March meeting agenda – Review of Successful Cities 12 key elements and Inspire Nanaimo Action Plan. c) Budget Update: Don Bonner to report on United Way Don sent regrets and advised by email that he had approached United Way who confirmed they work with other groups (supporting an idea or event), therefore if an event/project came up which Inspire Nanaimo supported, could apply for funding. He also advised that the Vital Signs work is proceeding and funding has been gathered from sponsors with work commencing soon. d) Brown Bits: Fred Brooks reporting back Fred advised that he had sent a mass email to the Salvation Army, John Howard Society, Tillicum Lelum Society, Nanaimo Area Land Trust, Nanaimo Horticultural Society and Young Professionals of Nanaimo which he will forward to Committee members for their information – “Improving Nanaimo’s Beauty and Character ‘One Flower and One Youth at a Time’” to introduce them to the project. At this time he has not received any feedback other than a response from Young Professionals of Nanaimo. He will wait a further week to ten days before following up. He requested Committee members’ support if they know a key person in these organizations. The project is not just about flowers but about youth, the City and its people. Angie left the meeting at 5:18 p.m. e) Additional Community Members f) The sub-committee will meet and report at next meeting, with a list of suggestions, members, staggering of terms of appointment and maximum number of consecutive terms.
