When I am in the country…I never wish to leave it;
and when I am in town it is pretty much the same.
Pride and Prejudice
Tour fee includes nine nights in first class hotels at
double occupancy in twin-bedded rooms with private bath; full breakfast daily, two lunches, and
five dinners (three with wine); private airconditioned motor coach; an Austen specialist tour
guide; local guides for interior visits, admissions to
all events and sites listed; porterage of one suitcase
per person; gratuities to hotel and restaurant staff.
Prices based on the exchange rate of US $1.56 to £1.

Itinerary Highlights (Tentative as of January 2015)
Although she was a country clergyman’s
daughter, Jane Austen lived in and visited a
variety of places, from cottages in small villages
to townhouses and large country estates. This
tour itinerary has been tailored for JASNA
members and includes town and country
locations that shaped her life and fiction.
FRIDAY, JULY 10: Join JASNA members in the
morning at a designated Heathrow airport hotel
for the start of the tour. Depart for Steventon,
Jane Austen’s
birthplace, in a
deluxe motor
coach and visit St.
Nicholas Church,
where she was
baptized. Following a special welcome and
presentation at the church, stop for lunch at the
Wheatsheaf Inn (pictured above), where Jane
Austen often picked up the family’s mail. Then,
proceed to Chawton to visit Jane Austen’s House
Museum and enjoy a private tour of Chawton
House Library. Continue to Winchester for hotel
check-in and a group welcome dinner. Hotel in

SATURDAY, JULY 11: Take part in a morning
ceremony at the grave of Jane Austen in
Winchester Cathedral, then walk to 8 College
Street (below), where she died. Return to
Chawton to attend the afternoon session of the
Jane Austen Society’s
Annual General
Meeting, including a
keynote lecture and tea.
Opportunity to attend
Evensong in the
Chawton church and
visit the graves of Jane Austen’s mother and sister.

SUNDAY, JULY 12: During your free morning in
Winchester, you may attend a morning service at
Winchester Cathedral or explore King Alfred’s city
on your own. In the early afternoon, depart for an
excursion to Portsmouth to visit the Historic
Dockyard and Maritime Museum (site of the former
Royal Naval College, where Frank and Charles
Austen received their naval training). Tour Admiral
Nelson’s flagship, the HMS Victory, and take a short
walk in Old Portsmouth, the 18th century section of
town. After dinner on your own, meet with
Hampshire members of the Jane Austen

MONDAY, JULY 13: En route to Bath,
stop in Lyme Regis on the seacoast of
Dorset to walk on the Cobb and
explore the small town. Continue to
Bath and a short introduction to the
city, hotel check-in, and a group
dinner. Hotel in Bath; B, D*
TUESDAY, JULY 14: Tour Bath with special stops
at Austen-related sites, including the exteriors of
townhouses Jane Austen lived in, the Assembly
Rooms and Museum of Fashion, the Pump Room,
and Walcot Church, where Rev. George Austen is
buried. Hotel in Bath; B*
WEDNESDAY, JULY 15: Continue your
exploration of Bath with a visit to 1 Royal Crescent
(via the Gravel Walk). After some free time in the
afternoon, enjoy a Regency Evening with dinner and
period entertainment. Hotel in Bath; B, D*
THURSDAY, JULY 16: Travel to Oxford for a
private visit to St John’s College, where Rev. George
Austen was a
student and
don. Free time
will be available
for individual visits to other colleges, the
Bodleian Library or Blackwell’s Bookshop. In
the afternoon, travel southeast into Kent to
explore villages and estates Jane Austen knew
well. Hotel in Tunbridge Wells, B, D*
FRIDAY, JULY 17: Tour Sevenoaks, the town
where Jane Austen’s father was born, and see
the Red House, where her great-uncle Francis
lived. Then travel to Goodnestone House, the
home of Edward Austen Knight’s in-laws.
Although the house is being restored, the
gardens are beautifully maintained, and we will
lunch in the converted stables. Round out the
trip to Kent with a visit to Edward’s
Godmersham estate, where Jane Austen was a
frequent visitor, and visit the manor house,

SATURDAY, JULY 18: Travel to Brighton to
visit the Regency resort and tour the Royal
Pavilion and the Regency Town House. Use
your free time to explore the lanes, the beach
and the pier. Return to Tunbridge Wells for a
Farewell dinner. Hotel in Tunbridge Wells; B, D*
SUNDAY, JULY 19: Tour ends. Transportation
provided to Heathrow and Gatwick airports for
participants departing on this day. Arrangements for extending your stay in London can
also be made through Pathfinders. B*
