PREPARE for a Spiritual Renewal
Lent 2015
“We have been born again to a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (I Peter 1:3)
So the one who was once a fisherman, full of brashness
and bravado, describes the change in his life that Jesus
brought. He had to fall on his face before he could recognize his need for a Savior. He had to “die” before he could
rise to a new strength and meaning he had never known before.
So, Lent is a time of soul-searching. No matter how long
we have known the Lord, or how recently we have begun
seeking, Jesus’ outstretched arms are reaching out to us. All
we have to do is PREPARE, or in Jesus’ words, to watch.
There will be many ways to do that in the 40 days leading up
to Easter Sunday, beginning with Ash Wednesday services
on February 18 at 7:00 a.m. with imposition of ashes on our
foreheads in the sign of the Cross, and Communion. Our
evening service will be at 6:30 p.m. with the imposition of
ashes.
The ashes of Ash Wednesday are a sign of repentance; or as
described in Psalm 51 “the offering acceptable to God: a broken
spirit and a contrite heart.” The sign of the Cross is a reminder
that when we invite God to examine us, our Savior can
make us new.
Five Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. — February 25, March
3, 10, 17, and 24 — will provide opportunities to PREPARE with worship and Communion, in this spirit of soulsearching and openness to God. In Sunday morning worship, we will be helped to PREPARE by the parables of
www.chcpc.org
Jesus that look into our very souls. All this, so
we can enter into Holy Week on Palm Sunday,
March 29, prepared and ready to gratefully receive the Savior, who welcomes us as we are,
but never leaves us where we are.

Sunday, February 8
There will be a single 9:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday, February 8, when our newly

summarizing the ministries of CPC throughout 2014, with video interviews of our committee chairpersons. There will be a brief
time for questions, followed by a congregational brunch. Discussion around the brunch
tables will be in response to two questions:
What has been the best experience you’ve
had at CPC in 2014? What are your hopes
for 2015?

gone very well and reflects
the excitement of CPC

supportive with an overwhelming participation
by active members to financially support the

Dateline
By Linda Cirillo
Baton at the ready, Clarion Bell Choir Director
Lee McGinty begins the rehearsal. There are
starts and stops while she coaxes better
technique from ringers. Eventually the song
emerges. And if you think it is heavenly to hear
the Bells during service, it is more so when you
are seated among them, listening during
rehearsal.
Lee chooses music that is specially written or
adapted for bells, by composers who
understand bells and allow phrasing that takes
best advantage of the sounds made. Codified
symbols indicate how a bell should be played.
Techniques such as damping, plunking, letting
ring, are indicated directly over the notes. New
techniques are continually being developed. A
new one is “singing,” produced by running a
dowel around the rim, similar to a finger
around a glass. Pretty cool, huh?
After rehearsal, the ringers clean and polish
their bells with special cloths. Any prints or soil
left on the bells would eventually damage the
finish. Despite TLC, “the bells do sustain
damage through use. They are plunked, hit with
mallets, and slammed on tables,” Lee explains.
A few years ago, a memorial gift financed a
refurbishing. The set was sent away to be tuned
and voiced evenly, and more bells and chimes
were purchased. Now there are 4 octaves of
bells and 3 of chimes.
Lee’s introduction to bells came in a Houston
church in 1978, just around the time handbells
were beginning a growth in popularity. A set of
bells was donated and she, as the organist, was
asked to develop a bell choir. She had never
played bells before, so she learned along with
the ringers.
When Lee arrived at CPC in 2000, the bell choir
was a small group of only 6 – 8 ringers that
didn’t have a regular playing schedule, and they
wanted to do more! Lee changed the scheduling
routine and it made a big difference. Now at the
beginning of each year, she sets up a schedule
so the ringers know when they are playing in
church. The bells play every 4 – 6 weeks in
church. In the past few years, the choir has
doubled, “the ringers are happy, and they laugh
and have fun.” Yet, Lee adds, “They take their
job seriously. We are confident that we are
leading the worship music.”
Endowment Fund
The Endowment Fund remains a supportive
arm to the growth and development of CPC’s
missions. Spinoff funds from the Endowment
have been able to provide financial monies
over the past couple years for the Garden, audio/microphone/sound system equipment,
support for Stephen Minister Training and the
purchase of Bibles that will be given to new
members when they join the church.
Endowment Fund monies as of 12/31/2014
are $659,939 and remain invested with the
New Covenant Fund. The Endowment Committee is planning informational messages in
February to encourage members to donate to
the Endowment Fund through gifts, wills or
other commitments. Our goal is to grow the
fund to 1 million dollars which will provide a
strong source of spinoff interest monies that
can be used for the development and support
of programing and missions of CPC through
one time grants. If you have questions about
the Endowment Fund, please contact John
Helms.
