JANUARY 2015 SPOTLIGHT ON EDUCATION IN THE WILKES COUNTY SCHOOLS January 28, 2015 Volume 3 Issue 06 Wilkes Early College High School Accepting Applications Wilkes Early College Will Host a Prospective Student Night February 5, 2015 6:00 pm- 7:30 pm Formal Presentation will begin at 6:30 pm Walker Center Ballroom Dion Stocks, principal at Wilkes Early College, and staff strongly encourage parents and students interested in applying to WECHS for the fall to attend this information session. Prospective freshman will learn about expectations, requirements, and just exactly what is WECHS! This is a great time to explore the possibility of making a significant impact on your future. Applications will be distributed at each middle school beginning January 2015. Students must return completed applications by February 20th as No Late Applications will be accepted! The students were definitely engaged as shown in the pictures. VOLUME 3 ISSUE 06 CB Eller Students Assist Homeless CB Eller Elementary School students, staff, parents and community held a one day food drive for the Catherine H. Barber Homeless Shelter. The Junior Beta Club were a big part of this effort. Principal Chad Mann stated, “I am extremely blessed to serve in an area where helping others is a high priority!” CB Eller Junior Beta Club is pictured along with Principal Mann. Students Selected for NC Elementary Honors Chorus Parker Childress and Tori Teague, 4th grade students at Millers Creek Elementary, were selected from over 600 students to participate in the NC Elementary Honors Chorus in Winston Salem on November 8-9, 2014. They were chosen by audition to participate with 198 other students from around the state. The event was a weekend of rehearsal, culminating in a concert directed by Tom Shelton, Jr. at the NC Music Educators Conference. Both students achieved great accomplishments during this event. Parker received a perfect score on her audition. Tori had a near-perfect score and was chosen as one of six to audition for a solo. Parker and Tori are students of Carol Huffman. JANUARY 2015 VOLUME 3 ISSUE 06 JANUARY 2015 Mackenzie Starr Third Time Spelling Bee Winner Mackenzie Starr won the Wilkes County Schools 2014-15 Spelling Bee for the third consecutive time. Mackenzie is pictured on the left and runner-up, Sylvia Prevette is on the right. Mackenzie is a student at West Wilkes Middle and Sylvia is a student at East Wilkes Middle. Congratulations ladies!!!! The bee was held January 22, 2015 at 6:30pm in the Stone Center for the Performing Arts. Moderator for the event was Beth Hubbard, Assistant Principal at Mountain View Elementary School. Judges were Andrea Byers and Tamarah Cornette, Curriculum Specialists and Angie Lamb, AIG Coordinator. Technical Assistants were Jamey Lambert. Seventeen students participated. The students were: Sydney Ferguson, Boomer Ferguson; Elijah Brolin, CB Eller; Isabelle Curry, CC Wright; Joshua Molai, Central Wilkes Middle School; Sylvia Prevette, East Wilkes Middle School; Aydan O’Neil, Millers Creek, Meagan Black, Moravian Falls, Kendall Stanley, Mount Pleasant; Dakota Watson, Mountain View; Jared Bumgarner, Mulberry; Evan Cothren, North Wilkes Middle School; VOLUME 3 ISSUE 06 JANUARY 2015 WILKES COUNTY HALL OF FAME GRANT RECIPIENTS The Wilkes County Hall of Fame recently awarded over $8,000.00 in grant monies to be spent in the area of the arts and athletics in Wilkes County Schools.
