Sport Manitoba will send a from Miami.
The list shows the athletes’ and Higham will lead the of MB women’s vote
team of 299 individuals to the
2015 Canada Winter Games in
Prince George BC, February 13
- March 1, 2015. The only really familiar name on the list is
Jaycee Magwood of Killarney,
who is on the female hockey
team. Jaycee is a granddaughter of Judy (nee Rattie) and Bob
Vanrobaeys.
The influence of living near
La Riviere ski hill shows in
the alpine skiing team, which
includes Amanda Creith from
Manitou and Nicholas Friesen
current place of residence, and
also lists hometown. Surprisingly, the Manitoba athletes include young people originally
from Italy, Egypt Vietnam, Korea and China.
Keenan Brown (Archery,
Winnipeg)
and
Christian
Higham (Women’s Hockey,
Winnipeg) have been named
Team Manitoba’s flag bearer
and lantern bearer respectively
for the opening ceremonies of
the 2015 Canada Winter Games

This year’s Honourary Captain, Kaitlyn Lawes, is a past

competed for Manitoba in curling at the 2003 Canada Winter
Games. She won back-to-back
Canadian junior titles as a skip
in 2008 and 2009. Lawes won
an Olympic gold medal for
Canada as the third on Jennifer
Jones’ team in Sochi last year.
Clippers hockey - lots of goals
This past weekend the Clippers played two home games
at the Clipperdome. First up
was the Deloraine Royals who
are the defending league champions. The home team came
out skating hard, really trying
to push the pace of the game.
Early in the game Sean Haight
tipped one into the Deloraine
net to give the Clippers the lead.
The Royals responded but were
soon answered on before the
end of the first. In the second
Deloraine was able to cash in on
their oppurtunities and took the
lead 3 - 2 going into the third.
Drew Haight scored five minutes into the period, but from
that point on the visitors took
control of the game and scored
three more times before the final buzzer. Final score Royals
6 - Clippers 3.
Sunday night the Clippers
hosted the Carberry Plainsmen.
From the beginning of this
game there was lots of golden
chances and goals. Only one
minute in the score was 1 - 1.
The Clippers added two more
to the Plainsmen’s one in the remainder of the first period.
In the second the Carberry
boys tied it up early, but the
Clippers answered later as
Drew Haight scored his third
of the night. Going into the
third period it was 5 - 3 Clippers. The Sunday game, how-
ever, had much the same feel as
Saturday’s in the third period.
Where the Clippers were not
able to score on their chances,
the Plainsmen did. When the
dust settled, after an empty-net
goal, the final score was Plainsmen 7 - Clippers 5.
Next weekend the Clippers
travel to Melita to take on the
Bisons and then Sunday, Feb. 1
at 1:00 p.m. the Gladstone Lakers are in town.
August 2, 2015 will be the
hundredth anniversary of Nellie McClung’s Speech to an enthusiastic crowd in the Manitou
Opera House on the topic of
women’s suffrage – the right
to vote. On August 6, 1915, the
government of Premier Norris
was elected. His government
granted women the right to vote
in Manitoba in January 2016.
These events will be celebrated
at the Manitou Opera House this
coming summer and autumn, so
watch for details!
The Manitou Opera House
Foundation has been raising funds for the Accessibility
Project, an addition which will
include accessible washrooms,
meeting room and kitchen area,
and access to the street level.
The Backstage component includes a ramp which will allow
easy access for all to the Opera
House stage.
Construction of the Accessibility Project will begin
this spring with completion
by year’s end. Al Thorleifson,
project manager, thanked the
community for their support
of the project – over two hundred seventy five donors have
donated over $500,000 to the
Project so far. The $50,000
from the Enabling Accessibility
Fund and the $50,000 from the
Town of Manitou bring the total
to $600,000.
The Foundation will need
to fundraise another $150,000
to cover the remaining costs
of the project. Mr Thorleifson
encouraged anyone who would
consider making a donation to
do so as soon as possible. The
Foundation’s goal is to raise
sufficient funds to pay for the
project before it is completed.
