and mutiny is brought to life in a thrilling new stage adaptation by
Bryony Lavery, broadcast live from the National Theatre. It’s a
dark stormy night. The stars are out. Jim, the inn-keeper’s
granddaughter, opens the door to a terrifying stranger. At the old
sailor’s feet sits a huge sea-chest, full of secrets.
Jim invites him in - and her dangerous voyage begins.

Andrea Chenier
The poet Andrea Chenier and the servant Carlo Gerard both love
the young aristocrat Maddalena. When Maddalena loses
everything in the French Revolution, Chenier offers her protection,
and so incites the envy of Gerard now a powerful official.
Chenier is arrested during the Terror. Gerard spurred on by
jealousy, condemns him. Maddalena pleads for his life and Gerard
helps her to join him in prison where they both meet their death.

The Flying Dutchman has been cursed for eternity. Once every
seven years he is allowed to come ashore to seek redemption.
He may have found it in Senta, a woman who longs for escape
from her dreary life. Senta accepts the Dutchman’s offer of
marriage. The Dutchman wrongly suspects her of unfaithfulness,
leaving her alone to resume his endless voyage.

Presented by the Dickens Society
The Dickens Society, Malton will perform a presentation on the
“Oldest Profession” with particular reference to its effect on and
impact in York. The talk will cover Dickens’ references to prostitution
in his novels, the reasons for the growth of
prostitution in the C19th, the “floating brothels” sent
to the Colonies and the women who didn’t want to
be saved. An informative and thought provoking
evening.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers
Meera Syal returns to the National Theatre in this tumultuous play
on an epic scale by David Hare. India is surging with epic ambition
but beyond the Mumbai luxury hotels lies a makeshift slum full of
people with plans of their own. Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim
to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house. Sunil ,twelve
and stunted, aims to eat until he’s tall as Kalu, the thief. Asha
seeks to steal government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a
“first class person”. But schemes are fragile; global recession
threatens the garbage trade and another slum
dweller is about to make an accusation which
will shatter the neighbourhood.

Cox & Box Two lodgers...one bedroom…one
unexpected meeting…. Adapted from the
famous farce Box and Cox, by John Madison
Morton, this was Sir Arthur Sullivan’s first
foray into comic opera. Sergeant Bouncer, an old soldier, has a
scheme to get double rent from a single room. By day he lets it
to Mr. Box (a printer who is out all night) and by night to
Mr. Cox (a hatter who works all day). His plan works well until
Mr. Cox is, unexpectedly, given a day off and the two lodgers
meet, and they discover that they share more than the same
bed…
A Selection of Gilbert and Sullivan Favourites
The second act is a selection of some of the most well-known
and popular Gilbert and Sullivan music, and will chart the history
of the famous and prolific partnership. A mixture of solos,
ensemble pieces and chorus numbers, from a range of shows,
including Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and H.M.S Pinafore,
there will be something for everyone to enjoy!

Three criminals on the run find they can go no further and found a
city of gold. The destitute and the disenchanted flock to
Mahagonny. Jim & Jenny try to escape but find themselves still in
the city and Jim is arrested and convicted of myriad crimes - chief
among them a lack of money, punishable by death.

Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes plays Jack Tanner in this
exhilarating reinvention of Shaw’s witty, provocative classic.

Man and Superman asks some fundamental questions about how

Tanner flees to Spain where he is captured by bandits and meets

Galtres Centre for the first time. Mike
has sold in excess of 1 million books and is
currently in talks for them to become a TV
drama series. Born in York and with almost
twenty years in the force he is now a UK
ambassador for crime, making regular contributions on both radio
and TV.

The Swiss hero William Tell longs to liberate his people from the
cruel Austrian occupation. When he helps a Swiss prisoner to
escape Austrian justice he comes to the attention of the governor
Gesler -who sadistically forces Tell to shoot an apple off his son’s
head. As Tell is arrested his fellow revolutionaries , led by young
patriot Arnold & his lover Mathilde, gather forces to fight for Swiss
liberty and Tell escapes to lead the victorious uprising.

This is an evening of sublime entertainment with music

Little Sister Band.
Three perfectly pitched voices and four live musicians

celebration of the contribution girl groups, female

through the decades. With hits from the musicals, the
Swing and Big Band eras plus retro arrangements of
more modern hit songs, it’s a night of musical
entertainment interspersed with stories behind the
songs from home grown Yorkshire talent.

We are not a local authority run facility. The Centre is managed and run by
a volunteer Management committee and its day to day operation relies

The Entertainment Centre is available for hire.
The tiered seating can accommodate 173 but an
additional 77 can be seated on the flat.
There is a 14 foot screen and up to date sound and
light system and a hearing loop.
