Van Buren Man Arrested After Leading Deputies on Vehicle Pursuit
Town of Van Buren, New York – Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that the Sheriff Deputies have
charged a Van Buren man with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs after he leads Deputies on a pursuit that ended
near his own residence.
Last evening around 10:25 pm, Deputy Mark Grady stopped a 1998 Honda Civic on
Downer Street in front of the Tops Friendly Market, after observing the vehicle operating
with an inadequate headlight. The vehicle’s driver, identified as Jonathan Cayea (19) of 33
Fishermans Creek Baldwinsville, was further discovered to be in possession of an open
container and small amount of marijuana. While Cayea was placed under arrest and in the
rear of Deputy Grady’s patrol vehicle, one of Cayea’s passengers, identified as Jeremy
Hauswirth (19) of 7755 Seneca Beach Drive Baldwinsville, jumped in the driver’s seat of the
Honda vehicle and sped off.

Department, pursued Hauswirth, who was later determined to have several outstanding
warrants out of the Baldwinsville Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office. The pursuit ended in the 7600 block of
Seneca Beach Drive after Hauswirth struck a mailbox and the vehicle became disabled.
Hauswirth then fled on foot into the nearby wooded area with Deputy Grady giving chase. Additional assistance from
Air 1 and K-9 Units with the Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police also responded to the scene. After a short
foot pursuit and a Taser deployment, Hauswirth was taken into custody without further incident.
Hauswirth, who admitted to Deputies that he ingested several controlled substance type pills prior to and during the
pursuit, was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, Unlawful
Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd Degree, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the
3rd Degree and 23 traffic related offenses.
Hauswirth was transported by the GBAC Ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital where he was medically evaluated for a
possible drug overdose. He was released this morning and arraigned by Judge Darlene O’Kane in the Town of Van Buren
Court where he was remanded to the Justice Center in lieu of bail set at $10,000 cash or bond. Hauswirth is due back in
Van Buren Court on December 1st, at 7:00pm. Cayea was charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and a Vehicle

& Traffic infraction for an inadequate headlight. Cayea was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear
in the Town of Van Buren Court on a later date.
Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd Degree is a Class A Misdemeanor.
Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the 3rd Degree and
Reckless Driving are unclassified Misdemeanor. Unlawful Possession of Marijuana is a Violation and the
traffic related offenses are Infractions.
