UNIFICATION OF THE SEXUAL ASSAULT CENTRE OF LONDON

UNIFICATION OF THE SEXUAL ASSAULT CENTRE OF LONDON AND
WOMEN’S COMMUNITY HOUSE
BACKGROUND
ABOUT SACL
Sexual Assault Centre London (SACL) exists to create our world without
sexual violence. For 38 years, this has been our passion by providing
support services in London and Middlesex County, and working to change
harmful attitudes that allow sexual violence to exist by engaging our
community to make change. SACL is uniquely positioned to provide the
critical feminist focus, analysis, safety, support and expertise that is
necessary to directly address sexual violence. SACL challenges the status
quo by mainstreaming issues of sexual violence through public education,
activism, and outreach and by advocating and supporting survivors as whole
people to find their voices, to heal and thrive and to make their unique
contributions. Support services at SACL include: 24 hour crisis and support
line staffed by volunteers, accompaniment, individual and group counselling,
outreach to vulnerable populations, advocacy, and Girls creating Change
programming for young women.
ABOUT WCH
Women’s Community House (WCH) began operating in 1978 with a shelter
on Piccadilly Street in London. From its early courageous beginnings, WCH
has emerged as one of, if not the largest high security emergency shelter in
the country and an active member of a dynamic community that has
achieved an international reputation for services to abused women and their
children. Within a feminist philosophy, WCH currently operates: two
emergency shelters, a Second Stage Housing apartment building,
Transitional Outreach Program (TOP), Family Court Support Worker Program
(FCSW), a Community Group Program for Children Exposed to Woman
Abuse, a 24-Hour Abused Women’s Helpline and walk-in counseling service
to help meet the needs of abused women and their children from London
and region. In 2011, to enhance the children’s program which receives
limited government funding, WCH opened its first social enterprise “Mine
101”.
On July 29, 2014 the Boards of Directors of the Sexual Assault Centre
London and Women’s Community House met to learn about the process of
full unification and about each of our respective organizations. After
extensive dialogue and individual Board meetings both Boards unanimously
agreed to move forward with the process of a potential amalgamation.
