Meet their Orangutans - Orangutan Conservation Education Center

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is home to four Bornean orangutans. Tiram is our resident male. He has a very relaxed
personality, quietly observing his surroundings. Tiram has had three offspring at the Zoo and is a patient father. He is
very intelligent and quickly takes to training sessions with staff. Kayla arrived in Cleveland in 1994 and has had three
offspring during that time. She is always an attentive, protective and careful mother. Kayla is curious about the public
that visit her and will spend time near the glass to examine something she is interested in. Tiram and Kayla are the
parents of Kitra who was born in 2001. She has lots of energy and tends to stay busy throughout the day by moving items
around her exhibit. Kera Wak came to Cleveland in 2000 from the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. She learns
quickly and is very intelligent. Like Kayla, Kera Wak shows interest in guests who visit the orangutan exhibit.

Since 2000, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the Cleveland Zoological Society have donated over $75,000 to orangutan
conservation, supporting the Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Programme. In addition, the Zoo conducts education
programs which highlight actions people can take to help orangutans, such as purchasing items made by companies
committed to using sustainably harvested palm oil. To this end, the Zoo distributes hundreds of palm oil shopping guides
to guests. In 2013, The Zoo worked with Project Dragonfly and Miami University, as part of an NSF grant, to install three
interactive kiosks at the orangutan exhibit. Guests learn about the Zoo’s orangutans, their personalities and preferences,
and how to help orangutans in Cleveland and in the wilds of Asia.
