Cheeky came into the clinic for bite wounds on her arms, leg and tail. She was in a scuffle with the free roaming
monkeys and needed meds to treat the wounds. Then she suddenly developed necrotic skin spots in non-bite areas and
it seems she had an adverse reaction to the antibiotics she was on. Thankfully, her bite wounds are almost healed now
and the necrotic skin spots have shrunk and disappeared after Silke made the right decision about
changing medication and choosing to use “Dexa” despite many advises against it. We were so
desperate, that Silke even ask on facebook for help, we couldn’t just watch her “rotting” in front of
us with an allergic reaction of up to 70% fatality. Thanking Josie from VMF for getting us in contact to
their Vet too.
She also needed surgery, the Vet cut all necrotic skin on her face and shoulder
away. She looked terrible but finally started to heal again when Wound Magic did
the work of dissolving dead skin tissue. All looking good. She uses both arms again,
we kept Cheeky's wounds clean, she loves the groom! Happy to report: no new spots and the spot on
the neck and her bum disappeared, Wound Magic must have dissolved the necrotic tissue all other
spots were also shrinking and went away, so vervet happy! Cheeky is healing nicely now, wounds
getting rapidly smaller, thanks to Wound Magic and Flamezine, Vit E, additional protein, Vit C+B and
the incredible natural healing power of Vervets doing the trick!
Flippie and Hazel-Grace
Our little highway-rescued baby-girl is suffering from severe bruising and we have to watch her liver as most of her body
has turned yellow, she has a good appetite and is looking around with her beautiful big eyes. Thanks to Jacque Davis the
baby-girl now has a beautiful name, being called Hazel-Grace. We went to the vet this afternoon to have Flippie and
Hazel-Grace checked and x-rayed. My worries were confirmed, Hazel-Graces Pelvis is fractured, some human not worth
being called "human" must have hit her with a hard object like a cricket bat, golf club or metal rod, good news, we
treated her right and she is healing. If she needs an operation? We are not sure yet but think her injuries will heal like
this, as many other patients before her with a broken pelvis healed nicely with just cage rest. Flippie fell badly on his
knee when having a fit. It has been 3.5 years now, different medications and still he fits 2-10 times during nights. 
Meetings with community leader to discuss the possible release of 2 troops on their community owned 14000ha nature
reserve went vervet well. Site visit and inspection done, it is vervet suitable and beautiful with dams, water streams,
mountains, and typical rich Waterberg vegetation.  Only disadvantage is that we have no cellphone signal at the sites
and therefore need to look at possible sponsors for hiring 2 Satellite phones as communication is essential for safety of
man and monkeys. Exciting news: Paul O’Grady from British Television is interested in filming our work! We found two
release sites, which means freedom for Nkawu’s Troop and Lisa’s Troop towards the end of this year.
Newest arrival, 3.5 year old vervet handsome sexual maturing monkey-boy, rescued also believed
to be an ex-pet who was just let go, he'll be introduced into a troop for rehab now. He still has no
name, any suggestions? Any chance of also finding him a Guardian Angel who will be happy to
support him with a monthly payment of 150Rand (15USD/11 Euro)? Please, please, please...GA's
are life-savers.
Thank you to Jacque Davis, Susan Brown, Jeri Eckler, Marike Markram, Bettie Smith, Vanessa
Sparks and Marie van Wyk for becoming Guardian Angels and to Marie van Wyk for also renewing
her Guardian Angelship for her grandson “Keagan” supporting monkey-baby-boy “Little Keagan”
from Lisa’s Troop for yet another year.
Firebreaks in the making @ Bambelela. By law all landowners must have at least
a 3-4m firebreak done...otherwise there is no legal protection.
This is what to expect when staying at Bambelela: watching monkeys, baboons, warthogs, zebras, bushbucks,
porcupines and bushbabies at night, the Verraux Eagle, kites and falcons in the sky, bird life in the Vlei of Groot
Nylsoog River.....wildlife right in front of your chalet's stoep! [terrace] And not to mention bushpigs, Kudus,
Impalas, Ostrich, Waterbuck, Giraffes on top of the mountains, mountain reedbucks, Louis the dassie and his
family, tree squirrel, listening to the leopard by night sometimes, other predators like civet, caracal, genets,
honey badger, in the river there are crabs and a few Cape clawless otters, an over 2m long leguan (rock
monitor) sometimes one can listen to the black back jackals' callings on top of the mountain too...us, living here,
altoften taken it all for granted...but it is indeed amazing to live here.
Almost 70 days free - Life is so much better now but there is so much to think about, Soekie living the good life between
two comfy zones: within Baboo’s Troop and amongst us at Bambelela.
