EATTLE - About two dozen SPEEA
members who worked a portion of
the year in Seattle are receiving an
increase in accrued sick-leave hours.
SPEEA caught a mistake in the Boeing process associated with the implementation of
the city’s mandatory paid sick leave ordinance. The impacted employees were inadvertently shorted sick leave when the hours
transitioned from “current” to “unused” sick
leave in the Boeing system if those employees were coded as having worked in Seattle
during at least part of the year.
Only certain accrual/usage patterns resulted in the shortage; hence, the impact was
limited to a small percentage of those
working in Seattle.
“It took a while to convince Boeing that
their implementation was erroneous under
certain conditions, but eventually we
worked together to correct the sick leave
balances,” said President Ryan Rule who
uncovered the mistake. Adjustments range from two to 25 hours
of additional sick leave. Boeing has adjusted its system to account for employees
working portions of time in Seattle.

filed individual Charges of Discrimination.
The EEOC has assigned a lead investigator to coordinate investigation of both the
class-wide and individual charges.

program a success
T
he day-long ‘Step up for SPEEA’
event in Wichita Nov. 13 drew
60-plus members.
At the meeting, SPEEA activists who
recently stepped up to be mentors connected with the members who expressed interest in getting more involved in their union.
The event included networking and skill
building with SPEEA leaders including
SPEEA President Ryan Rule and SPEEA
Secretary Jimmie Mathis as well as attending
the Midwest Council meeting, where Council
Reps elected new regional Council officers.
The participants in ‘Step up’ also learned
about ways to get involved, not only as
Council Rep or Area Rep, but also by joining a committee, becoming a bulletin board
focal (responsible for keeping SPEEA boards
up-to-date in the workplace) or participating in SPEEA Wichita events, such as the
upcoming ‘Bowling with Santa.’
The members left energized and ready to
