For the least of these... - The Diocese of Southwark

4 THE BRIDGE... April 2014
The Diocese remembers
the First World War
Are you an expert on
war memorials?
Well....this could be
for you – and if you’re
not, it could be for
someone you know.
The Revd Dr
Catriona Laing
writes:
As we are being reminded
across the media, this year
marks a hundred years since
the beginning of the First
World War.
Projects to commemorate
the War are well under way
and it’s time for the Diocese of
Southwark to get involved!
There are already a number
of plans afoot in parishes
across the Diocese and we look
forward to seeing and hearing
more about them over the
coming months.
Whatever you are or aren’t
doing by way of
commemorating, there is one
way in which the whole
Diocese can contribute.
We would like to
commemorate all those from
this Diocese who died during
World War I.
To this end we are gathering
all the names of those who
died, so that they can be
remembered by name during
the hourly prayers at the
Cathedral.
We hope this will be a
simple, but powerful means of
commemorating the dead in a
sustained and meaningful way.
Please help us achieve this!
We need someone from
every parish to send a list of all
those from your parish who
died serving in the military
during the war.
There’s no cost, not much
hassle, just a few hours
looking at the memorials in
your parish and sending us the
names. If you’re not into this
kind of thing there is bound to
be someone you know who is!
So please find them and get
in touch with us.
You can send the
information by email
to Catriona.laing
@southwark.anglican.org or to
me at Trinity House.

St Wilfrid’s, Horley is one of
the four churches who hosted
the Reigate and Banstead
Winter Night Shelter (WNS)
on Saturday nights from mid
January to the beginning of
March. The other churches
were St Matthew’s,Redhill; St
Margaret’s, Chipstead and
Reigate Park Church.
Margo Slater,
St. Wilfrid’s
WNS Co-ordinator
writes about their
experience:
This was our second year
helping to provide an evening
meal, bed and breakfast to
those without a place to sleep
during the coldest winter
months. All guests (usually
men) are interviewed and
made aware of the rules which
protect guests and volunteers
alike.
The interviews also enable
the WNS team during the day,
to try to help the guests find
work or training and a more
permanent home.
The St Wilfrid’s team and other helpers
The evenings start at 7 pm
with a briefing on the guests.
The kitchen team starts to
prepare the meal and gets the
kettle on so that hot drinks are
ready when the minibus
arrives with guests.
Guests and their bags are
checked in and bedding
arranged. At about 8.30 pm
the meal is served and
everyone sits down together
creating a family atmosphere.
THE DIOCESE OF SOUTHWARK
Personal Assistant and
Office Manager, Raynes Park
£24,988 - £28,649 pa
The Archdeacons of Lambeth and Wandsworth need a PA/Office Manager to
support them in their role of enabling and serving the mission and ministry of
parishes and chaplaincies, their clergy and lay workers in the Kingston
Episcopal Area.
For this challenging, varied and proactive role you will have excellent
communication and people skills, experience of dealing with sensitive issues
and an ability to prioritise. You will also be highly organised, flexible, able to
manage projects on your own initiative and to work under pressure as part of
a small close-knit team without compromising accuracy and attention to
detail. You will be strongly supportive of the aims of the Christian Church
and, ideally, have a practical understanding of the way parishes work or some
other aspect of the workings of the Church of England.
For an application pack, please visit our website or telephone 020 7939 9402
or email: [email protected]
Closing date is Tuesday 8 April
Interviews will be held on Wednesday 16 April

After the meal some play table
tennis, others read the
newspapers provided, play
cards, chess or whatever we
have. Guests are allowed to
smoke outside so long as they
are supervised. At 10.30 pm
the night shift takes over; the
guests drift off to bed and the
volunteers take turns sleeping
and keeping an eye on the
guests. Generally the nights
are uneventful and a good
chance to catch up on some
reading!
At 6.30 am the early shift
takes over and provides a
simple breakfast. Everything is
then packed up for loading on
to the minibus by 8am.
Each shift is managed by a
Supervisor to ensure
continuity of care and
communication.
St Wilfrid’s have felt
privileged to be involved and
are reminded of Jesus’ words
in Matthew Ch 25 v 40*.
We have met many people
who have signed up to help on
our shifts, some from local
churches, others who feel
drawn to help.
Other churches in our
deanery have also hosted the
shelter this winter as well as
other denominations, working
together to show God’s love to
those in need.
The King will reply,
‘Truly I tell you,
whatever you did for one
of the least of these
brothers and sisters of
mine, you did for me.’

THE DIOCESE OF SOUTHWARK
wishes to appoint a
Social Media Officer
21 hours, 2 year Fixed Term Contract
£20.3k – £22.6k (pro rata)
The Diocese of Southwark encompasses urban South London with parishes
stretching into the more rural parts of East Surrey. It is one of the most
multicultural and diverse dioceses in England.
The Communications and Resources team is based at the Diocesan Office near
London Bridge. The Department is responsible for managing all external and
internal communications for the Diocese seeking to share positive stories of the
work of the churches in their local communities. The Department also helps
the parishes to think about their stewardship of the resources given to them.
We are a busy team and we now need additional help in identifying and following
up news stories from parishes and people around the Diocese, and in working
out how best to develop and use new media to publicise these stories.
For this exciting new role, you will need to be experienced in and enthusiastic
about the use of social media as a communication tool for raising awareness of
issues and events, confident at taking and working with photographs for
publication, with good verbal and written communication. Attention to detail
and the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines are essential, as is the
ability to work well with others.
You will be in sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Christian Church,
and ideally will have an understanding of the workings of the Church of England.
For an informal discussion, contact Wendy Robins, Director of Communications
and Resources and Bishop’s Press Officer on 020 7939 9436
