Power Monday
This coming Monday is not a Power Monday. School will start at the regularly scheduled time of 7:25.
Graduation Information
Seniors, please remember to turn in your graduation packets, regardless if you order anything. Herff
Jones needs all measurements for caps and gowns, even if you have not paid the graduation fee yet. If
you do place an order and the amount exceeds $100, you will need to deposit at least $100 with the
order. Representatives with Herff Jones will be at Independence next Wednesday, October 8th during
lunch through 6:00 pm after school, and Thursday, October 9th during lunch only. Extra packets are in
the front office or student services. If you have any questions, please contact Chris McGimsey with
Herff Jones or Assistant Principal Heather Black.
From The Guidance Office:
ACT Prep classes are still being offered on Columbia State Campuses. There will be five
evening classes for a cost of $140. See attached flyer for more information.
The October Counseling Scholarship newsletter is attached. You may also pick up a copy in
the Guidance Office.
PTSO
The next PTSO meeting will be Monday, October 6, at 6:15 p.m. in the IHS library. Everyone is welcome
to attend. We will be discussing, among other things, upcoming fundraisers and the plans for the
Outdoor Classroom.
Team Trivia Contest
Everyone is invited to attend Team Trivia Challenge this Sunday, October 5th, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. in
the IHS gym. If you and three of your of your smartest friends or family members would like to play,
come a bit early and sign your team up for $40.00. Spectators are free. All proceeds will benefit the IHS
outdoor classroom.
Spirit Wear
PTSO volunteers will be selling spirit wear on Friday, October 17 during all lunches and at the
Homecoming Game. Spirit Wear will also be sold on Halloween, October 31st during Lunch and the
Senior Night Game. Come Get Your Spirit On! If you you’d like to purchase something before those
dates, or even something a little different, be sure to check out the IHS Prep Sportswear website at

Upcoming Club Meetings
Tryouts for the Tennis team will be taking place next week. Boys will tryout on Tuesday October
7, and girls on October 8. Students must have an up-to-date physical to tryout. Please see
Coach Balzer in room F185 if you have any questions.
The Girls Lacrosse Club is about to start their 2014 Fall season! Practices will be on Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 3:30pm-5:00pm starting this week and running through November 20th,
2014. A sports physical and US Lacrosse membership is required in order to attend

If you are interested in playing Boys’ Soccer there will be a meeting Monday, October 6, after
school in Coach Phillips’ room, D-127.

Come join the Independence Ultimate Fall Frisbee League that starts Monday, October 6 , at
3:00 p.m. on the front field of IHS. Anyone can play and both boys and girls are welcome!
Practices and games will be on Mondays and Thursdays starting at 3 p.m. We will have 4 teams,
4 games and 1 champ. Come on October 6th and 9th and we will place you on a team.

Tier III Badges
A PTSO volunteer will be in the front office on the following dates and times to prepare Tier 3 badges
Wednesday, October 8 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday, October 22 from 7 – 10:00 a.m.
Wednesday, November 5 from 7 – 10: a.m.
Please note that you may have a badge made at any WCS school. For more information about Tier 3
badges and what is required, please see the WCS website.
Independence Vocal Department presenting Italian Dinner Concert
The IHS Vocal Department presents the 5th Annual Italian Dinner-Concert next Tuesday, October
7th. The dinner is being provided by Olive Garden with a dessert and coffee bar available. The Vocal
Department choirs have been selected to sing at Carnegie Hall in June, 2015, so the theme for the
concert is “Give My Regards to Broadway,” featuring music from shows such as Pippin’, Kiss Me Kate,
Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Annie Get Your Gun, Rent, Company, Sound of Music, and
many, many more. Featured choirs will be the prestigious award winning Show and Chamber Choir,
Women’s & Concert Choir, Men’s and Women’s A Cappella groups, and the W.N.B. (Who Needs Boy’s)
women’s select group. Tickets are available by emailing or calling the director, Mrs. MaryLee Atenhan at
[email protected]; 615-472-4600 x2524 (leave a voice message) or contacting any Independence vocal
student. Tickets for the dinner & concert are being pre-sold. Adults are $8.00, Students $5.00 and Pre-K
are $2.50. Admission for only the concert will be $5 for Adults and $3 for Students and may be
purchased at the door.

Parents of seniors, please remind your students that they need to check the spelling of their name on the
window in front of the counseling office. Their name must be complete and spelled correctly for diploma
orders and the graduation program.
Kick For The Cure

The IHS girls soccer team will be playing BGA on Tuesday, October 7 , in the annual Kick For The Cure
game. This is a great way to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and all you
need to do is come and cheer the Lady Eagles on to victory. Please contact Coach David Cordero at

National Honor Society
Juniors who are interested in applying for membership in the National Honor Society should stop by Mr.
Ragland’s room D121 and pick up an application or visit his teacher page to print an application.

Outstanding Teachers
The Tennessee Titans and American Paper & Twine Company want to recognize outstanding teachers
across the Titans Radio’s listening area. Each week during the Titans season one deserving teacher is
honored as the Teacher of the Week. At the end of the season, a Teacher of the Year will be
selected. Please visit www.ShopAPT.com and click on the Teacher of the Week chalkboard banner to
nominate an outstanding teacher from IHS.
Family Access (Formerly Parent Portal)
This school year, parents will be able to view their students’ grades, schedules, attendance, etc. via
Family Access the program that has replaced Parent Portal. If you have not already done so, please
complete the Parent Access Participation Form 2014-2015 that may be found on-line at
http://www.wcs.edu/ihs/ under back to school information. Signed forms must be submitted to the
Guidance Department. In order to use Family Access, parents must come to the Guidance Department in
person and show a photo ID in order to pick up their usernames and passwords. Please note, the
usernames and passwords for the 2014-2015 year are not the same as last year’s. You may not pick up
anyone else’s username or password regardless of your relationship to that person. The Guidance
Department is open from 7:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
