I. Mode of Writing & Task
Style Analysis: when the analytical author focuses on the rhetorical elements an author implements to make a critical point. You take into account
the SOAPS model while doing this! Your goal: To analyze Edwards’ goal with this sermon taking into account the Great Awakening.
II. Assignment:
1. Complete a close reading of “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards. Scan this
barcode here (using an app on your phone like i-nigma or barcode scanner):
2.
Identify and analyze three pieces of imagery and/or figurative language in Edwards' "Sinners in the
Hands of an Angry God". Think about their function to the overall piece: how would they impact the
audience? What purpose do they serve?
3.
Then, in a carefully constructed essay response explore how the rhetoric impacts his targeted
audience.
The end product of this assignment will result in a 2-3 page paper analyzing the FUNCTION of each example of imagery/figurative language.
Analysis of diction and tone is inherent in everything you will be doing for this paper - reference your packets on diction, power verbs, and tone words
for guidance. You WILL inherently incorporate all elements of the SOAPS model into your response.
Your response will be assessed with a modified AP rubric (posted separately on my website). I will have copies made for you on the day of the final
draft. However, it is recommended that you review the expectations and are familiar with the task at hand.
III. Due Dates:
* ALL portions of this assignment must be typed according to MLA format regulations. NO EXCEPTIONS.
