Mini Competition – Changes The theme of ‘changes’ brought in a fantastic array of prose and poetry. Ursula Dewey’s ‘Postpartum’ is a poignant and visceral piece on loss. Hannah Embleton-‐‑Smith uses stream of consciousness to reflect a ‘Sate of Mind in Flux’ with great precision and energy. With a nod to David Bowie, Fionn Coughlan-‐‑Wills ‘Ch-‐‑ch-‐‑ch-‐‑changes’ also uses stream of consciousness to examine a turning point in life and loss with elliptical prose. Di Slaney captures a moment of metamorphosis in lyrical poetry as a chicken moults after her first season of laying eggs, in ‘Shedding Feathers’ while Sara Khorasani stays with metamorphosis in nature to capture the voice of an ermine with subtle affect and beautiful sense of place. Heidi James-‐‑Dunbar submitted a group of excellent pieces, particularly ‘The Turn’, which reflected its subject matter in careful line turns and used sound with great control to enhance innovative images. Poignant, but beautifully controlled, Jay Whittaker;’s short, lucid poem ‘Canopy’ faces the results of chemotherapy with scalpel-‐‑like precision. Adam Craig delivers a chilling moment in time in ‘Twelfth Hour’ and has a wry take on ‘individuality’ and how we conform in order to purchase uniqueness in the tightly crafted ‘A Life Re-‐‑made in Pictures’. Romyanna Thomas piece is a succinct and powerful narrative; from its shocking first sentence to the raw poignancy of the ending the whole piece sustains a single metaphor with superb control. Susanna Fitzpatrick’s accomplished poetry finds it’s form in a honed sonnet ‘Opening the Witch Bottle’, an innovative piece full of sound patterning that strengthens the imprisonment of the witch, and brimming with energy aided by deft line turns. Loss, metamorphosis and surprise featured strongly in this competition, often handled with real originality..
