• Meeting convened in April 2013 between WHO, IWA, ADB, those with WSP audit
experience and those interested in developing auditing schemes to share best
practices, lessons learned and recommendations
• Examples and case studies were submitted by countries with established audit
schemes (e.g. Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Portugal and South Africa)
• Guidance document drafted and undergoing expert review; targeted for
finalization by end of 2014

The audit ladder
WSP auditing is flexible and the appropriate
methodology, scope and depth will be context specific.
Where WSP implementation is in the early stages, or
where supplier resources are significantly constrained
(as in the case of small supplies), audits will likely be
informal with a focus on the provision of support and
advice. Where WSP implementation and regulation are
more advanced, WSP audits will likely be more formal
and complex.
7
The audit ladder
Rigorous,
formal audits
satisfying
regulatory
requirements.
Less formal audits.
Supportive in nature.
WSP “evaluation” or
“assessment” often
preferred over
“audit” to set the
right tone.

Australia
