EVERY
RED
DOG
HAS HIS DAY
BY GORDON ARMSTRONG
H
e’s just 22 years old but already
South Adelaide’s Brent Macleod
has crammed a fair bit of life
experience into his football journey.
So far the game has taken the
dominating midfielder to three states.
Now he finds himself in a second stint
at Hickinbotham Oval and has become
a consistent and key member of the
Panthers’ 2014 on-field success.
Macleod has enjoyed representative
football with Vic County at under 15,
16, 18 and senior levels and a stint
with Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup.
During his first spell at South in 2011
under coach Ron Fuller, Macleod see a
lot of team success although his own
efforts were handy, but the end of
2011 saw Macleod head back home
to Geelong.
“I was a bit overwhelmed at the end
of that season,’’ he said. “I just wanted
to go back home and refresh and
reassess. There were a few things
going on and I probably wasn’t ready
to go on.’’
After spending 2012 at home,
Macleod headed to Canberra in 2013
where he played for Tuggeranong
Hawks in the North East Australian
Football League.
Despite little team success Macleod
stood up as a playing assistant coach
to win the NEAFL’s NAB Rising Star
award. He was also judged the best
under 21 player at the Australian
Country Football Championships
in Wagga.
While that was good grounding for
the player tagged Red Dog, named by
one of his Geelong coaches after the
movie by the same name, a return to
South was gnawing away at him.
“You could say it was unfinished
business,’’ Macleod said. “I really
wanted to have another go. When I
came back I noticed a lot of things had
changed, a new coach, new players,
new staff.
“Under Ron (Fuller) it was a lot of
one-on-one accountability but with
Brad Gotch now it is a full ground
zone defence. It really is quite different
and everyone seems to be really
enjoying their footy.’’
Macleod’s improved fitness, where
he dropped about 12kg earlier this
season after enduring an-injury riddled
2013, has seen him enjoy a consistent
2014 with a team high average of 22.3
possessions per game, and 6.4 marks a
game and 23 goals from 18 games.
‘’Last year I couldn’t really train and
just played,’’ he said. “This year I got
my body right and it has made a
difference. Being a coach last year
didn’t faze me. Age is just a number, if
I see something I just go and do it, it
doesn’t worry me.’’
Not that Macleod or the team is
focusing on breaking the club’s
50-year premiership drought but he
said it would be nice to do something
good for the club and supporters.
“The boys met some of our 1964
premiership side when we played Port
Adelaide recently and that was good,’’
he said.
“We’re not thinking too far ahead but
you know it would be really good for the
community if we could do it (go top).
Everyone is on board with our game
plan and excited about the prospects.’’
Off ground, Macleod is flat out with
his business Macleod Landscape
Constructions and Maintenance where
he was recently awarded a contract
with SA Government department Fleet
SA to look after its grounds.
Living at Morphett Vale with partner
Layla, a nurse at the Royal Adelaide
Hospital, Macleod’s days are long with
travelling daily to work and training
several times a week.
“A few boys at the club have helped
me with work so that’s been good,’’ he
said. “We are all pretty chummy and
enjoy each other’s company.’’
Beyond 2014 it will be a case of wait
and see, says Macleod.

exciting of the year for South
Australian footy diehards is finally
here. The Finals.
We recap the results of each club
against their fellow finalists this year
and judge how they will fare in the
four weeks where legends are born
and history is made.

PORT
It comes as little surprise that the
minor premier Magpies boast the best
record against their finals counterparts
for 2014. The boys from Alberton were
able to record clean sweeps over Sturt
and Woodville-West Torrens while
splitting their matchups against
Norwood and South. Inevitably the
success of Garry Hocking’s men will
be influenced by which Power-listed
players are available, however, they
have shown themselves to be the
competition frontrunners for most of
the year. Anything less than a
premiership will be a disappointment.
NORWOOD
After a slow start to the season
where many questions where asked of
the Redlegs they responded by making
a dominant run to finish in second
spot. Won one and lost one to Port,
Sturt and South but were beaten by
the Eagles on both occasions which
could be playing on the Redlegs’
minds should they meet again. Some
doubts remain on whether Ben
STURT
3-5
SOUTH
4-4
Warren’s gameplan can transfer over
to the bigger deck of Adelaide Oval
after they were beaten by North there
on Anzac Day.
STURT
Burst out of the blocks this year
winning four of their first five to set up
a successful season which culminated
in the Double Blues finishing a well
deserved third and securing the
double chance. Have shown
throughout the season that their best
footy can match anyone, Seamus
Maloney’s charges were able to split
their meetings with Norwood, South
and Woodville-West Torrens. Will be
wary of facing Port who beat them on
both occasions, however their second
meeting in Round 12 was a tight affair.
Lost three of their last five and seem to
have dropped behind the standard set
by Port and Norwood, however, they
play with a lot of heart and will not go
down without a fight.
SOUTH
Managed to split all meetings with
fellow finalists and were able to beat
EAGLES
4-4
Sturt, Port and the Eagles in recent
weeks. The Panthers are very well
drilled under Brad Gotch and look to
have hit form at the right time which
makes them a dangerous proposition
to face. Despite being in the top five
all year many predict South to be a
dark horse, any team who
underestimates the Panthers should
do so at their peril.
EAGLES
It has been an inconsistent season
for the Eagles in 2014, they were
beaten on both occasions by Port but
were able to overcome the Redlegs
twice along with splitting their
meetings with Sturt and South. May
be low on confidence after losing to
South, Sturt and Port in the second
half of the season along with losing
four of their last five games. The
advantage for the Eagles lies in coach
Michael Godden as he is the only
coach in the finals that has been there
before in the SANFL, which could
give him an edge over his first-year
counterparts.

FINDING HIS WINGS
BY ROBERT LAIDLAW
P
ocket rocket is possibly the best
way to describe young Eagle
Angus Poole who is beginning to
make a name for himself at league
level after dominating the reserves in
recent years.
After topping the reserves Magarey
Medal count for the past two seasons
(albeit he was ineligible last season),
to some his performances have come
from nowhere, but it has been no
surprise to those at Oval Avenue.
Poole comes in at just 170cm and if
you think for a second this holds him
back you would be wrong, his high
work rate and ability to win the ball in
tight are the hallmarks of his game.
As a result of his size and courage,
many supporters liken Poole to former
Woodville West Torrens great Justin
Cicolella, who used to wear number 51
(Angus dons guernsey 52).
“I always admired ‘Cicca’, and he
had the same type of body as me, so
it’s natural to want to achieve what he
did out of footy,” the 20-year-old said.
“And current veterans like Luke
8
sanfl.com.au
Powell and Luke Jarrad are great
players to have as team-mates. I
love the way they never take a
backwards step.
“If anything, footy probably isn’t as
physical as it was, as it is more hot
and fast, whereas I don’t mind a bit
of contact.”
Originally from Kadina, where he
played all his junior footy before
progressing through the Eagles junior
squads, Poole played in a couple of
colts flags at home, including a best on
ground in a grand final, as well as
winning an association medal.
By 2010 Poole was already starting to
make a name for himself at the Eagles,
when in August he won MVP honours
in a Macca’s Cup game against
Central District, a year after
representing the state’s under 16s.
And then in 2012 the young gun won
the Reserves Magarey Medal, after
playing every game for the Eagles.
“It was nice to win but I would have
preferred to have played league footy,”
Poole said.
“And in 2013 I wasn’t too
disappointed about missing out on
the medal after being reported in a
league game.
“I remember my league debut
clearly, against Sturt in round one last
year, as we were something like five
goals down at half time and got up
and won.
“While I kicked a couple of goals, I
was a little disappointed with my first
kick, as it was a point. If it had been a
goal it would have been a nice stat.”
Last season the small forward, who
always runs through the middle, was
in and out of the league side with the
AFL players returning, which isn’t a
problem this season.
But he did play both of the Eagles
finals games in 2013, although losing
both was a disappointment.
“Finals footy is a different level, it’s a
lot quicker and intense,” Poole said.
“Now it’s about establishing myself
at league level. I’m more confident and
involved more, which makes it more
enjoyable to play.
“Playing in the AFL would be nice,
and if I was a bit taller it might have
helped. I just want a good career at
the club, and it would be great to play
in a SANFL premiership team.”
Poole comes from a sporting family.
His dad Richard played in a couple
flags with Paskeville, while his older
brother David played juniors at the
Eagles, and his mum was a softballer.
A duct-installer with an airconditioning sub contractor, Poole
enjoys his current lifestyle, although it
allows little time for socialising.
“The best thing about my job is
its flexibility to train and play footy,”
he said.
“There isn’t much free time with
work and football, as it seems I’m
training or home in bed, but I enjoy it.
“You only get 10-15 years in the
game, so my best advice to youngsters
coming through, work hard and enjoy
playing.”

WHEN GOOD TECH TURNS BAD!
T
he World Cup introduced new
technology for goal scoring, which
picks up the three-dimensional
position of the ball.
According to reports, “when the
whole of the ball passes the goal line, a
vibration and optical signal is sent to a
watch worn by the referee in less than
one second, indicating that a goal
should be awarded.”
Personally I prefer the circus of a
goal review, running the replay back
and forth fifty times and the pleasure
of the uncertainty, despite the
technology. But that’s just me and may
explain why my parents sent me off to
boarding school at an early age.
My colleagues have suggested some
other technology we could introduce
to make the game more interesting:
Bank Robber Technology. If a
defender grabs the back of the jumper
of an opposition forward, a pink dye
squirts from the guernsey and covers
their hand, for all the world to see.
Bring Back The Bump. Two carmakers have developed inflatable
seatbelt technology. Let’s bring back
the bump but introduce mouthguards
that inflate on impact, as well as small
pillows worn behind the ears, that also
inflate on impact. (Think Prince
Charles you’ll get the idea.)
Fit Kit. Coaches might like this one:
clothes that tell the coach how hard
his players are trying! The AFP reports
that OMsignal has T-shirts fitted with
sensors woven directly into the fabric.
“The T-shirts are not only able to
process the usual vital-sign data
during a workout; they also connect
the user to the internet. The user’s
exercise statistics are relayed through
the sensors to a small black box,
clipped onto the product. From there,
the data transmits to a smartphone via
Bluetooth.” It would bring a whole
new element to the stats that coaches
keep – and heaven help the player
who has not put in 100%
Hologram Heroes. Introduce one
hologram player per side. It plays a
purely motivational role (for obvious
reasons). Can you imagine bringing
back Neil Kerley as a hologram! You
could program him to run around
yelling at opposition players. Or
Malcolm Blight repeatedly telling the
opposition ruckman that he’s
pathetic? Or Mark Williams sitting in
the opposition coach’s box tugging at
his tie?
Electric Shock Treatment. A couple
of guys in a workplace set up an April
Fools stunt which allowed people on
the internet to zap them with
electricity. Here’s how this could work
for footy. Like The Hunger Games,
every player’s name goes into a hat
and then we choose one player per
game, per week. When they make a
mistake, fans get to zap them. A
microwave set up could relay the Zap
Command to the player’s shorts,
which are fitted with electronic wires
(low voltage, of course). In the first year,
it could be trialled on the umpires?
Zapper Part Two. This has been
proposed for Phantoms that have far
too much time on their hand and need
to get zapped if they don’t hurry up
and find a real job.
