This agreement aims to unify the efforts produced by and between Rawabi Holding and the campaign “Set Your Direction” led by Global Shapers as one of their community initiatives, which both work for the benefit of students to support them in determining a career future corresponding to their talents and supporting the activities presented at the annual Rawabi Talent Exhibit (RTE), led by Rawabi Holding. With the support of the Ministry of Education, Global Shapers will visit students at schools based in the Eastern Province to present them with a variety of job professions and encourage them to visit the exhibit to ask their questions during the open dialogue sessions. They will also lend their support during the Talent Exhibit to represent the careers in the booths throughout the duration of RTE. Local Global Shapers Community Founding Curator Turki Al Theyeb pointed out that “there are no limits to serving our communities and our society, we believe in the positive effects of our initiative on the long run: it will help decrease unemployment and the turnover rate across all sectors. It will also increase each individual’s knowledge to better evaluate their skills and build a brighter future for themselves and their children. We also aim to produce a year-end final report with the results of our work and present it to the Ministry of Education to further build on our initiative.” More than a 100 professionals already volunteered with the Global Shapers initiative since the launch of their “Set Your Direction” campaign online, and they have shown a very enthusiastic response to help answer the youth’s questions via a customized e-mail. The questions sent by the students or young males and females are categorized and sent to the adequate professional whose answers are then filtered, verified and sent back to the students. 2 Rawabi News Issue 36 Jan-Mar 2014 Employee Rewards Program Volunteer Categories Category Committee Membership (such as a monthly recycling committee) Company Sponsored Visits (such as the juvenile detention center) Company Sponsored Campaigns Volunteer Rewards Program Mrs. Hanaa Almoaibed, Group Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, presented a CSR presentation introducing the Corporate Community Service Employee Rewards Program highlighting ways employees will be rewarded for their participation in social events organized by Rawabi Holding. Hip Hip Hooray, It’s a Gymboree day!! Rawabi News Issue 36 Jan-Mar 2014 11 Business News Team Contributions Internal Auditing: Welcome to the World, Baby! Key To Improving Organizational Governance & Risk Management By: Johanna Fowler Expecting a new baby, or just welcomed a new arrival into your family? Knowing how to encourage your baby’s development will give them the very best start to life and their first year of life when their development will be at the highest rate of any other time in their life. A baby’s brain is not fully formed at birth and will double in size within their first 12 months so how a parent interacts with their baby will enhance their development greatly. Newborn babies will sleep around 16-17 hours each day and will need quiet restful places without being passed around to too many visitors. Baby will only see as far as around 30cm – just enough to look into the eye of those who hold them and in black & white during these early months. Toys that have faces, strong colors and are close enough for baby to see will all help with developing their vision. Mobiles are an excellent toy. Classical music has shown to help baby’s brain development at this stage as well. Smile and talk to baby as much as you can while they are awake. The safest sleep position for baby is on their back with a clear space free from toys or blankets and always in smoke free air. Remember all children, even babies from birth should always be in infant carseats to keep them safe in your car. 12 Rawabi News Issue 36 Jan-Mar 2014 At One Month of age baby will be able to see further and will start to be able to follow with their eyes. Encourage baby to track items with their eyes by holding bright or shinny toys or those with rattles in front of them and moving it slowly side to side. A baby’s head is very large in proportion to the rest of their body and they will need to have their head supported until they are able to hold it up themselves. At around 8 Weeks your baby will be starting to smile at faces and turn to look at noises and sounds around them. Singing nursery rhymes and songs, talking and smiling to your baby will encourage these lovely first smiles. Help baby to develop head control by supporting them with pillows when they are sitting or in their carseat and allow baby plenty of time on their tummy to help neck muscles develop. Baby may now begin to start reaching out and trying to hit toys in front of them so toys such as baby gyms are great for this stage. Babies of 3 Months are now developing their hand – eye coordination as well as the parts of the brain controlling speech. Baby will now look at you while ‘gurgling’ or speaking in their own special way. Talk to baby as much as you can, read stories and play funny face games in order to receive the best giggles and smiles! Babies will now be able to recognize and remember the people most special to them. Baby will need lots of tummy time to develop their neck muscles further. From 4-6 Months baby may be beginning to roll over so avoid placing baby on beds or couches they may roll off. Toys will end up in baby’s mouth now so avoid any items which may have sharp or loose parts and never anything small enough to fit fully inside their mouth. Toys should be cleaned regularly and if possible not shared with other babies or children to avoid passing germs. Baby will be able to see across a room and will now be seeing more colours but bright colourful toys are still best. From six months they may only want to be with those they know and strange faces may receive tears and crying. Fun games of ‘Incy Spider’ and ‘Peek A Boo’ with scarves or behind your hands will delight baby now. At around 6 months baby will be showing signs of being ready to start solid food – they will watch you eating – opening their mouth as they watch you do the same and everything will be put in their mouth. The first six months of your baby’s life will be the most special in their lives. Enjoy this wonderful time with your new baby and become fully involved in your baby’s development to give them the very best start to their journey of life. By: Mohammed Zaheeruddin Group Internal Audit Manager Competitive pressures demand that today’s organizations squeeze the most they can from all their resources — and as this article indicates, the internal audit process is clearly among the most critical. In addition to their responsibility for assessing and recommending internal controls, internal auditors’ skills in risk management and their broad based perspective of the organization uniquely position them as a valuable resource for strong corporate governance. As a result, informed senior managers and boards are relying on internal auditors for advice and counsel on everything from analysis of operations and assessment of risk to recommendations for improved corporate governance. Moreover, internal audit practitioners are increasingly being challenged to apply their expertise in much broader ways than ever before — such as evaluating At its simplest, internal auditing involves identifying the risks that could keep an organization from achieving its goals, making sure the organization’s leaders know about these risks and proactively recommending improvements to help reduce the risks. For internal auditing to be effective, the organization’s leaders must be open to discussing tough issues and seizing opportunities to make necessary changes for improvement. And the internal auditors must have an independent reporting line to the highest governing body, ensuring them the requisite authority to access all areas of the organization and know that they will be supported if and when their views differ from those of management. Internal auditors’ independence and broad perspective of the organization make them a valuable resource to executive management and the board of directors. They ensure that the organization is held accountable to its stakeholders, whether those stakeholders are investors (as in the case of a publicly traded company) or the general public, served by a government organization. Ultimately, internal auditors add value to their organizations by providing assurance, insight, and objectivity. Internal auditors can save their organization substantial amounts of money and protect its reputation in the marketplace by identifying operating inefficiencies, wasteful spending, employee theft, fraud, and cases of noncompliance with laws or regulations, for example. They keep an eye on the corporate climate and perform a variety of activities such as assessing risks, analyzing opportunities, suggesting improvements, promoting ethics, ensuring accuracy of records and financial statements, educating senior management and the board on critical issues, investigating fraud, detecting wasteful spending, raising red flags, recommending stronger controls, monitoring compliance with rules and regulations, and much more! “Internal Auditors often add value to the organization through their knowledge of controls & processes and by highlighting the risks associated with them.” – Mohammed Zaheeruddin Rawabi News Issue 36 Jan-Mar 2014 13 Team Contributions Team Contributions Olympics Day For The United Colors Of Rawabi Holding “Powered by People” seemed to be the most significant mantra of Rawabi Holding, the clear manifestation of it was the Open Day for male employees held on a By: Jeffrey V. Aquino perfect day of January Executive Secretary 3, 2014 at one of the Rawabi Specialized Contracting most prominent sports centers in the province – the Al Nahda Sports Facility in Al Khobar. The event was initiated by the ever effective Corporate Communications Department with the aim to not just stimulate an impeccable harmonious relationship among the entire Rawabi Holding members but to give leisure to everyone after a year of dedication and commitment to the company. Allow me to dub this gathering as the ‘Olympics Day for the United Colors of Rawabi’. Why? Simply because, it resembled a parade of nations when we witnessed the different nationalities gathered in one spectacular arena. Nepalese, Indians, Egyptians, Pakistanis, Lebanese, Filipinos, Singaporeans and of course the Saudi nationals who lined up for the sports they love to play. Various sports activities were the main attraction in the event wherein basketball, volleyball, football and lawn and table tennis were the most represented sports. In a well-lit and smooth volleyball court, the Nepalese showcased their prowess with meter high jumps to hammer the volleyball. They were all aggressive on the court; no ball was allowed to drop on their field. In each opportunity setting, the yellow and blue Mikasa ball was an attack against the opponent. Other nationalities played as well but it were the Nepalese who really made themselves a force to be reckoned with on that day. Table tennis and lawn tennis are racket games that require agility and precision. These two are almost similar; the only significant difference is size of the court as lawn tennis requires a bigger and wider field. These events were dominated by Filipinos who played in the doubles event as well. In lawn tennis tournaments, they have showcased their 14 Rawabi News Issue 36 Jan-Mar 2014 Safety Attitude By: Yousef AlBayabi Group HSE Advisor determination amidst the unfamiliar ground and under the heat of the sun. The football field was jam-packed with Arab nationals who tried to best the moves of their idol Ronaldo Messi and Saudi Arabia’s National Team Captain, Saud Kariri. Though no official tournament took place, the friendly games still allowed them to showcase their supremacy in devising offensive and defensive tactics. Lastly, there’s the basketball event. It wasn’t a surprise to us all that this event was dominated by Filipinos. Four uniformed teams battled for supremacy. The players where of various builds and heights, some reaching the 6 foot mark and beyond, yet their composure would have given the professional basketball superstars a run for their money. They set the hard court on fire with great chest passes and accurate hook shots. Defensive man-to-man strategies were seen at the later parts of the games. It is worth mentioning that those players with short reach more than made up for it by matching and even exceeding the momentum of a 6 foot player, making their presence felt and winning the applause from the spectators. They were instrumental in getting those hard-earned points that ensures the teams’ win. The saying, “a ball is round,” which means everything could happen in a game, proved that the size of the players doesn’t matter as luck might be on any bench. Above all of this showmanship, the true essence of solidarity and oneness was achieved on that very day. Medals and trophies were mere addons on their displays but the spirits of camaraderie, cooperation and teamwork were cherished after all. To respond to one of the company’s goals which is Volunteerism, we must give credit to the selfless dedication of all the volunteers who served as event facilitators ensuring that each Rawabi Holding member enjoyed the activities of the day. Whatever your nationality is... Wherever business unit you are in... Whatever sport you play... Open Day is the Olympics Day for the United Colors of Rawabi Holding! The HSE Department strives to foster a positive safety attitude among all Rawabi Holding employees, starting from the top-level management and ending at the junior base level. The issue is not a mere application of set procedures, but it is also a desire of staying on the alert and being prepared to confront all potential hazards at all times through allotting ample time and using the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). Attitude also implies a sincere response to safety instructions by going the extra mile. You need to abide by the following concepts so that you can acquire a good safety attitude: • Focus: A good safety attitude means that you focus on the task and concentrate on taking proper action. If your mind is preoccupied with other things, you will get distracted. If you’re bored, an accidental slip can easily occur. • Strength: In this context, strength doesn’t at all mean muscular strength; it’s the ability and know-how to do the right thing and stick to appropriate set procedures at the spur of the moment, even when you are under pressure to take shortcuts. • Time: A good safety attitude means taking the time to do things calmly and correctly. Doesn’t sparing a few extra minutes save a permanent injury? If you add up life costs due to injuries, it’s obvious that simultaneously doing the job the right way, the first time will be the best. • Responsibility: If you do care about safety for yourself and for your coworkers, you have to take responsibility even when a task “isn’t my job.” A good safety attitude means thinking of oneself as part of the team.
