We are looking forward to an exciting summer term and hopefully will get some more sunshine too. I wish to extend a warm welcome to the new children and their families that have joined us this term. I sincerely hope that they greatly enjoy and benefit from their time at Tavernspite School. German Trainee teachers – This week we have welcomed two trainee teachers from Wuppertal University, Germany – Caroline Roll and Linda Remeli. They will be working in Class 2 and 3 respectively as well as supporting generally across the school. They are staying with us for the summer term. We hope that they have a lovely stay in Wales and enjoy working at Tavernspite School. School Clubs – The extra-curricular clubs will resume in the week beginning Monday, May 12th. These clubs start straight after school and mostly finish at 4.00 pm (see table below). Please collect your children promptly. If your children are coming to a club for the first time then please make sure they have the appropriate kit etc. They do not need to register beforehand they just simply turn up on the day and the staff will do the rest. You will just need to collect them at the end of the club. The only exception to this is Chamber Choir in which you will need to book in with Miss Hickman. This can be done through the school office. The list of clubs and related details are as follows. Activities included ice skating, bowling, a visit to the cinema, a speed boat ride around Cardiff Bay and all whilst developing their Welsh language skills. Everyone had a fantastic time; the children behaved beautifully and were a pleasure to take. I am very grateful to Mr. Richard Henton, Mrs. Helen Evans and the two German teachers Linda and Caroline for giving up a great deal of their free time to accompany and supervise the children throughout the trip. Royal Visit – There was great excitement as the whole school travelled to Princes Gate Cool Water factory to see the Queen and Prince Philip on their Royal Visit. It was a wonderful occasion for everyone involved and made all the better by the beautiful sunshine. I am sure the children and staff will never forget this special experience and we are very grateful to Glyn and David Jones, Directors of Princes Gate Water, for the invitation. National Reading and Numeracy tests – Pupils in Years 2 to 6 are required by Welsh Government to be tested in reading and numeracy between May 6th and 13th. There are three tests altogether: a reading test, a numerical reasoning test and a numerical procedural test. This is a national pupil assessment programme whereby every child in Wales is given the same test so that comparisons can be made more easily. It is nothing to worry about, it is simply a way to assess the progress made and to plan the next stage of your child’s education. Class and Team Photos – The children will be photographed in school in their classes, sports teams, groups e.g. School Council etc. on Wednesday, May 14th. Fairtrade Football World Cup – On May 16th we are hosting a primary schools Fairtrade Football World Cup. At least 12 schools across Pembrokeshire will be taking part in this competition which has been organized by Mr. Henton and Sharron Hardwick of Fairtrade Wales. The matches will be played with footballs made following the principles of Fairtrade and refereed by PE students from Ysgol Dyffryn Taf to decide who will win the Fairtrade Football World Cup. Please find below some important dates for your diary. I will let you know further details of the events closer to the time.
