Carlton
AUGUST 2014 NEWSLETTER NO 17
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
2014 has been an enormous year for the Carlton
Football Club. Many Women of Carlton joined in the
celebrations of the Club’s 150 years at The Plenary at
the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre in
June. It truly was a special night, with more than 1,000
Carlton faithful treated to an action-packed evening of
entertainment plus interviews with Carlton greats led
by journalists who are also passionate Blues fans, and
a fantastic highlights video capturing the early days at
Princes Park through to the present.
This event also marked an important milestone for the
Club in the handing over of the president’s baton to
Mark LoGiudice by Stephen Kernahan. Stephen has
shown true leadership both on and off the field and we
thank him for his enormous contribution to the Club
and to Women of Carlton. Chief executive officer Greg
Swann has also left after seven years with the Blues. We
will miss him and the support of both Jenny Kernahan
and Leonie Swann at our WoC events, but welcome
our newest ambassador Elly LoGiudice, Mark’s wife, to
Women of Carlton.
Women of Carlton celebrates its
tenth year in 2014. We have
come a long way since Carlton’s
first female board member,
Lauraine Diggins, suggested
a women’s group be formed
to provide a voice for female
supporters and their own active
supporter group. Starting with
approximately twenty dedicated
women we have now grown to a membership of 350
including VIP supporters who are ambassadors for the
Club, with Caitlin Borchers coordinating our group.
I hope many of you will join us for the announcement
of the Women of Carlton Player Ambassador of the Year
award at the John Nicholls Medal presentation at Crown
Palladium on September 17. Booking details can be
found on the Carlton website.
Best wishes,
Judy Mullen

FEBRUARY
APRIL MATCH DAY COCKTAIL FUNCTION
Women of Carlton welcomed
our new recruits to the Club
in February, with director of
coaching and development
Rob Wiley and club journalist
Tony De Bolfo introducing the
players to guests.
Women of Carlton held their first match day function in the Arena View Private Dining Room at the
Carlton v West Coast game on Saturday April 26. Thirty members and their guests enjoyed the event.
Raffle prizes included one night’s accommodation and breakfast at Robinsons in the City donated by
Leanne Tyrrell and a Carlton guernsey signed by captain Marc Murphy and coach Michael Malthouse.
The room had a great atmosphere, especially when Carlton turned the game around in the final minutes
and won! Very exciting!

JULY BREAKFAST AT VISY PARK
Women of Carlton shared a great morning together at a breakfast
at Visy Park on July 4 to coincide with player training before the
victorious St Kilda game the following Sunday. Among the 50 guests
were WoC’s founding sponsor Ann Rathbone from award-winning
winery Yering Station and Anne and Danielle Ali from Centastaff
Recruitment who sponsor our Player Ambassador Award. Ambassadors
and past and present players relatives who attended included Vonnie
Henderson, Susan Jamison, Jessie Doull, Kate Kendall (Wayne
Johnston’s wife) , Joyce and Carolyn Brown, and Judy Mullen (Laurie
Kerr’s daughter).
Guests enjoyed listening to Colin ‘Col’ Kinnear talk about the power and
passion of the Carlton Football Club and his reflections on how the game
has evolved over his career, which has included the senior coaching
roles at Coburg and Sydney and as assistant coach to Robert Walls in
the Club’s 1987 premiership year. Carlton has also been served by Col
in a variety of other roles including football manager, so he was able
to provide a terrific insight into how the Club works and the different
challenges facing the players and the Clubs over the decades.
CFC’s player wellbeing assistant Lyndall Down outlined her role with
the playing group and explained how crucial player welfare is in
today’s game. Her role is to provide support and assistance to the
playing group (and their parents and partners), making sure their
needs are met and that they are pursuing a balanced lifestyle so they
can perform to the best of their ability and are aware of the extra
responsibility they hold as AFL footballers. It is great to see a capable
woman such as Lyndall working in this area at the Club.
Chief financial officer Jason Reddick also provided an insight into
the Club’s finances and what it takes to field a team each week in a
business that has a $57 million turnover.

More than 80 international students from RMIT University were
given an insight into Melbourne’s unique football culture in July.
As part of Carlton Football Club’s New Blue program, students
from all over the world were taught the basics of AFL for the very
first time.
The program aims to promote social inclusion among
Melbourne’s international students, by getting them involved in
our football culture.
Carlton’s fan development and diversity coordinator Ned Murphy
says it’s a fantastic way for international students to take part in
a uniquely Australian experience.
“Thousands of international students study in Australia each
year and our New Blue program will hopefully help them to
understand all they need to know about Aussie Rules,” Murphy
said.
“It’s a great way to get them involved in a social activity, and
help make them feel more a part of our community.”
