Dear Sir or Madam: It is our great pleasure to cordially invite you to the event Trendsetting Transparency? The Election of the UN Secretary-General 27 February 2017, 5:30pm to 7:30pm Pan-nordic building of the Nordic Embassies Rauchstraße 1, 10787 Berlin At the beginning of the year, the experienced UN diplomat António Guterres took office as Secretary-General of the United Nations succeeding Ban Ki-moon. His appointment by the UN General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council had been preceded by a selection process that is unique in the history of the United Nations. Mogens Lykketoft, President of the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly and initiator of the process, had promised "a transparent and interesting discussion about the future of the UN". Concentrating on the appointment process, we would like to discuss the following questions: How inclusive and transparent was the nomination of the UN Secretary-General indeed? Will the UN prospectively become more transparent? Can we expect further reforms within the UN system and, if so, which ones? We also venture a glimpse on the challenges António Guterres will face. The first SecretaryGeneral Trygve Lie welcomed his successor Dag Hammarskjöld with the words "Welcome to the most impossible job on this earth." Expectations are high given the global threats to peace and security. Guterres also has announced reforms in the fields of sustainable development and administration. Which legacy has Ban Ki-moon left behind and on which issues will and should Guterres focus on? Against this backdrop, the editorial team of the academic journal VEREINTE NATIONEN – German Review on the United Nations, published by the United Nations Association of Germany (UNA-Germany), together with the Embassy of Denmark in Germany invites you to a keynote speech and panel discussion with Mogens Lykketoft. For more than 60 years, VEREINTE NATIONEN has been the sole independent, German-language journal on United Nations affairs. In 2016, the editorial team in cooperation with the HMKW University of Applied Sciences for Media, Communication and Management in Berlin worked on a new layout for VEREINTE NATIONEN. We take this event as an opportunity to present the first issue of the redesigned journal. Programme Greeting H.E.
