EUY Press Release – International Yoga Day declared by the United Nation
The 21th of June was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11th, 2014. Yoga is a 6,000+-year-old physical, mental and spiritual
practice with its origin in India. It was brought officially to the West in 1893 by Swami Vivekananda when he addressed the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago. Since then there have
been countless exchanges between East and West – an exchange of knowledge and experience.
This exchange has been nurtured by the EUY since Gerard Blitz started the annual Zinal Congress in 1974 in Switzerland. Countless Indian masters like T.K.V. Desikachar, A.G. Mohan,
Vimala Thakar, J. Krishnamurti but also from all over the world like, Swami Satchidananda from
the U.S., André van Lysebeth, Eva Ruchpaul, Nile Hahoutoff or Babacar Khan have been invited, not only to share their knowledge and experience in Zinal but also having been invited by
member Federations to teach in various countries in Europe.
By the initiative of the Indian Government yoga can now be recognised, on a worldwide platform, on this day each year. We can celebrate the wisdom and teachings of yoga globally, giving
everyone an opportunity to share together their knowledge and experiences.
It has been the mission of the EUY to protect and promote the authenticity of yoga so that its
tradition and practice stays true to its origins without losing the natural evolution of the practice.
This has been quite a task in the past years as yoga has become increasingly popular in the
West.
But we cannot deny that yoga has become a worldwide practice. A practice shared by many different cultures and creeds and it is this universal unity that we would like to share on International Yoga Day on the 21st June each year.
People all over the world coming together to practice and to share, to remember where yoga
originated and to look to the future development of yoga – to that which is to come.
May we with respect, gratitude and openness come together on the 21st June to celebrate yoga
finding its place in the world.
