PREVIEW MEN'S DOWNHILL – Saturday 21 Jan 2017 Franz aiming for back-to-back wins Max Franz won the last World Cup Downhill in Val Gardena on 17 December, his first ever World Cup victory. He can become the first Austrian to win back-to-back World Cup Downhill races since Hannes Reichelt, who won in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Kvitfjell in February - March 2015. That was also the last time Austrian skiers won consecutive Downhill races. In 2016, only one skier managed to win consecutive Downhill races as Dominik Paris won in Chamonix and Kvitfjell (February-March). The last skier to win a Downhill race right after winning his first ever Downhill race was Didier Defago, when he won in Wengen and Kitzbühel in January 2009. Stephan Eberharter was the last Austrian to win consecutive Downhill races which included a win at the Hahnenkammrennen, when he won three in a row in January-February 2002, including in Kitzbühel. In the last 10 years, only one Austrian has won the Downhill in Kitzbühel: Reichelt in 2014. Several skiers aiming to fill void left by Cuche The last four World Cup Downhill races in Kitzbühel had four different winners: Dominik Paris (2013), Hannes Reichelt (2014), Kjetil Jansrud (2015) and last season Peter Fill. This streak followed on a run of five Hahnenkammrennen of which Didier Cuche won four times, including three in a row between 2010 and 2012. The last four editions had 10 skiers reaching the podium, with only Paris (first in 2013, second in 2015) and Reichelt (third in 2013, first in 2014) finishing on the podium multiple times. Peter Fill could become the second skier in the last 20 years to win consecutive Downhill races in Kitzbühel, after Cuche in 2010-2012. Italian skiers have never won consecutive Downhill races on the Streif. Other contenders Kjetil Jansrud is second in the World Cup Downhill standings behind compatriot Aksel Lund Svindal (who is out for the season due to a meniscus injury). Jansrud won the first Downhill race of the season in Val d'Isère. Only in 2014/15, he won more than one Downhill race in a single World Cup season as he won four, including in Kitzbühel. He can become the second Norwegian to claim multiple Downhill victories at the Hahnenkammrennen, after Lasse Kjus (2). The last skier to win two races in a single World Cup weekend in Kitzbühel was Ivica Kostelic who won the Super G and Alpine Combined in January 2011. The last skier to win both the Super G and Downhill in Kitzbühel in one weekend was Didier Cuche in January 2010. Information provided by Adrien Théaux finished respectively fifth in Val d'Isère and fourth in Val Gardena. He is the last French skier to win a Downhill race as he won in Santa Caterina on 29 December 2015. Luc Alphand (10) and Jean-Claude Killy (6) are the only French skiers to have won more World Cup Downhill races than Théaux (3). They are also the only Frenchmen to have won a Downhill in Kitzbühel. Steven Nyman has finished on the podium in five of his last six participations in Downhill races (twice second, three times third). Venue stats Kitzbühel will host a World Cup race for a record 49th season. On 21 January 1967 Jean-Claude Killy won the first race here (Downhill). The last seven men's World Cup races in Kitzbühel were won by seven different skiers. Marc Girardelli is the most successful ski racer in this town with seven World Cup race victories. Didier Cuche, Hermann Maier and Pirmin Zurbriggen follow with six wins each. Coming into this weekend, Austrians are one short of 50 wins in Kitzbühel. Only in Val d'Isère have ski racers from one country won more World Cup races, as Austrians have 52 victories there (including women). The last Austrian to win a World Cup race in Kitzbühel is Hannes Reichelt (coming into the weekend). He won the Downhill on 25 January 2014.
