Taste & Toast Second Tuesday of the month with Nancy Cooper and Carrol Anne Adams La Hora Loca, Spanish for “the crazy hour”...is becoming all the rage among parties, especially weddings. This tradition started in Latin American wedding celebrations, but has quickly spread across the globe for all kinds of celebrations. La Hora Loca is the perfect way to transition a wedding reception from the more traditional first part of a reception, to a more “high-energy” fun packed part of the party. Depending on your budget, this can be as simple as turning the lights down and the music up; or you can bring in live musicians, entertainers, dancers, specialty food or drinks, and giveaways like hats, masks & noisemakers to kick-start the fun. One of my favorite Crazy Hour Celebrations was when a bride surprised her guests with sizzling Samba Dancers, blaring Brazilian music, her wedding party threw out beads, glasses, feathered masks, glow in the dark necklaces and more. The dance floor was packed with everyone in the party having a blast! Our waiters butlered a “tipsy horchata” signature cocktail, spicy empanadas and warm churros throughout the room. It was a surprise filled night with outrageous fun that the guests would never forget! Saturday April 5th The Sweetwater men’s tennis team will be competing against a team from Sugar Creek on Saturday April 5th at Sugar Creek Country Club. This annual men’s event rotates sites each year and the two clubs’ compete for the Gentlemen’s Cup trophy. The team is made of 24 players ranging in ability level of 3.5-4.5. Each player is guaranteed two matches and lunch for only $25/ person Come out and join us this year for our tennis Crawfish Boil. We will play a couple hours of tennis and then move to the back of the club house for the crawfish boil. It’s all you can eat crawfish, drinks, and prizes just for playing. Cost is only $30.00. Hope to see you on the court! Congratulations to the winners of the first junior Grand Prix of 2014! Nadal division: 1st place- Nicholas Damiano 2nd place-Dominick Golemi Federer division: place- Jeremy Harvey 2nd place- Artem Ermishina 1st The first Junior Tennis “Pre-ZAT” drill session for 2014 was held Friday February 28th from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm. The objective, according to Coach Mike Maciel, was to provide a tournament preparation environment for these aspiring junior tennis players who would be competing in a U.S.T.A. Sanctioned ZAT tournament the following day. A ZAT, or “Zonal Advancement Tournament,” is considered the first phase of three competitive levels that exist in the Texas USTA section. I personally feel there was an immediate impact, as I had one parent contact me the morning of the tournament to inform me that his daughter was motivated to eat a proper breakfast and go through a proper warm-up for the first time ever. This is just one example as to why we need to continue these sessions. Educating these young players on the very basics of how to prepare for a tournament can make a positive impact. ZAT tournaments are held once a month giving players the opportunity to advance into higher levels of competition through consistent positive results. The goal would be to offer this drill session monthly the Friday before tournament weekend. Hence, giving the players the chance to practice key components of their game in a very structured environment. A total of six players attended the first session and were educated on the finer points of preparing for tournament play. Coach Maciel focused a generous portion of time on how to use “consistency” as a weapon, which is important at all levels, but plays an even bigger role at the ZAT level. I wanted them to understand the principal of “shot tolerance,” which is the number of balls an opponent is willing to execute consistently before they lose their patience and attempt higher risk shots. Sometimes as players we become too involved with being excessively creative on our end and we forget that opponents typically have glaring weaknesses that can be exploited by using a simple strategy. As players we need to take advantage of the obvious and not be adamant on hitting spectacular crowd pleasing shots. This high risk mind set won’t get you where you want to go too often and typically brings forth frustration rather than positive results. So, I promote the basic fundamental concept of tennis, which is to keep the ball inside the lines more often than your opponent. Having the ability to be highly consistent will be something players will use more often than not as they become more advanced. In addition, the junior competitors were handed a Tennis Journal (donated by Sweetwater CC), tip sheets that contained information regarding “dynamic” warm-up routines, tournament match goals and strategies, and information on establishing processes and routines that should be incorporated before, during, and after tennis matches. We had several discussions about the importance of having processes and routines in place and how this parlays into success. These kids are at the beginning of their long journey that is competitive junior tennis and establishing good fundamental habits now is critical to their future success. My goal is to motivate as many junior players to continue down the path of competitive tennis in hopes of many playing collegiate tennis one day. While I won’t hide the fact that much work and sacrifice is necessary, the experiences learned along the way are priceless. The next Pre-ZAT Drill Session is scheduled for April 11, 2014. We look forward to seeing you there!! Happy Hitting, Coach Mike The Men’s Golf Association played their annual ABC Tournament, “The Three Amigos”. Some great times were had and new were friends made!
