MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHTS
TS WORK
During February we saw the completion of our longlong
awaited project to replace the 30 year old floodlights
on the top courts. In addition the 10 year old lights on
the bottom courts
urts have also been fully refurbished. As
a result we finally have full modern lighting on all our
courts with a common token system which will give
year round benefit to all our tennis members. The
members
project was funded by Sport England’s
’s Inspired
Facilities fund which is part of its Olympic Legacy
initiative.
Many hands have been employed to make
ke the lights
work in time for the grand opening on Wednesday 5th
March but particualr thanks should go to Nicola
Humphries, Jane Philpott & Andy Perry for the
successful bd forr the funding and also to Andy Taylor,
T
Robin Merchant
ant and Alan Mansfield who projectproject
managed the work done by Exclusive Leisure Ltd, the
subcontractors who delivered the project.
The photos above show the remarkable amount of
concrete which was dug out from the
he base of the
previous lights, and the Grand Opening Tournament
when the lights were officially switched on.
WEST HEATON HITS THE NEWS
Our 140th year has been further celebrated, this time

a plug for the First Fridayy event featuring the band
Faustus. Have a listen on BBC iplayer (search folk

WINTER TENNIS
Just when most of us are sheltering from the worst of
the winter weather, the stalwarts of the tennis section
are donning bobble-hats,
hats, mittens and thermals to play
in the Winter League. The 1st Team now sit in 6th
place with 8 points, after 3 defeats, 3 wins and 2 draws
and a mid-table finish is almost guaranteed. Similarly
nd
the 2 team are looking at mid-table
mid
having won 4,
lost 4 and drawn 2. The full results can be found by
looking at the website, see:
http://derrington.eu/html/fixturesandresults.HTM Alan
http://derrington.eu/html/fixturesandresults.HTM.
Judkins had outstanding results in the matches he has
played and is currently ranked 3rd in the Division's
Men's Performance Table.. Well done Alan!
Winter tennis has always been about keeping playing
through the colder months, getting some good tennis
and having some fun. There have been a few comedy
moments in the season so far to keep us going. Oh the
joys of winter league tennis. Bring
Brin on the summer!

COMING UP…..
How long have you been a member of West Heaton?
I joined, aged 24, in 1956, soon after coming from
Huddersfield to work in Manchester and lodge in
Heaton Chapel. The Sevenoaks estate in Heaton Moor
didn't then exist, and I would walk from Shaw Road
along the right of way through Shaw Fold Farm to
West Heaton's back gate. I played very moderate
tennis but amused members with my service action.
Since 1988 I have bowled with at least some more
success.
What is the best thing about West Heaton?
The substantial membership of all ages and also the
historical records which have fascinated me - as Sue
and Alan Mansfield mentioned in the 140th
anniversary brochure.
Wednesday March 26th at 8pm – Club AGM
Friday March 28th at 11am – Golf society outing to
Withington Golf Club. Contact Harry Hall if interested.
Wednesday April 2nd at 8.00pm – Wimbledon Draw

musical entertainment from top acts.

Tournaments in the afternoon followed by tea and
cake. In the evening there will be a Black and White
themed disco and chicken supper. Tickets available
from the bar.
Were you in employment, and if so, what did you do?
SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT (AGAIN)
What is spare time? I have been Tennis Secretary,
Club Secretary, Club Treasurer and 40 years as
Subscriptions Treasurer of West Heaton, and also
recently have spent seven years as Treasurer of St.
Paul's Church, Heaton Moor. I am a bridge player and
enjoy watching local football. The establishments on
Heaton Moor Road like to tell me I'm a legend!
You may well have noticed the new speedhump as
you enter the carpark at West Heaton. This is
designed to slow down cars as they enter the carpark
following a couple of close-call incidents. We would
ask all members to take care particularly when there
are lots of junior members arriving and leaving, eg for
tennis camps or on Saturday mornings.
GETTING TO KNOW YOU…..
Each newsletter will end with a light-hearted
article to help you get to know some of the
key people at West Heaton.
This month we focus on Raymond Prior,
Subscriptions Treasurer.
What’s Best February 2014
I was in West Yorkshire's branch banking with Martins,
the symbol of which (liver bird and grasshopper) still
stands so well on the former branch on the corner of
Heaton Moor Road and Shaw Road. My move to
Manchester was to specialise in Probate and Trust
work. After the Barclays takeover I was determined to
stay in the area and I benefited from my contact with
former West Heaton President Gordon Atkinson who
enabled me to do similar work for his legal firm.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
What is your favourite TV programme?
Though not a golfer, I love the Open golf on four days
in July. I think it's the sport best suited to TV.
If you could pick someone from the past or present to
have dinner with, who would you pick?
The nearest I come to a claim to fame is that my
mother was on TV in old age recalling her attendance
at the first Wembley FA Cup Final in 1923. Her lifetime
hero was P.C. George Scorey on the white horse,
gently easing the estimated 200,000 crowd back
behind the touchlines, so I shall choose him.
