Christianity in the 21st Century
Four studies for groups
by Avril Hannah-Jones
As Australian Christians, we have the
challenging task of living in a modern and
postmodern world while living out a faith
whose roots are pre-modern.
The foundational events of the Christian
faith, Jesus’ Incarnation, Crucifixion and
Resurrection, occurred almost 2000 years ago.
How are we to live as Christians in the
twenty-first century? This series of four studies
looks at what it means to be Christian today,
examining our history; responding to two
of the biggest challenges facing Christians
today: living in a religiously pluralist world after
centuries of Christian domination in the West
and caring for creation. The last study looks at
the political implications of twenty-first century
Christianity. Are we ready to be martyrs?

Jesus Christ according to the
Basis of Union
Four studies for groups
by Geoff Thompson
At the very core of the church’s life is the
person and work of Jesus Christ. The Uniting
Church has a particular view about who he
was and is found in its Basis of Union. In
four outstanding studies, Geoff Thompson
explores what is understood by ‘risen
crucified one’, Jesus’ announcement of the
‘sovereign reign of God’; the redemption of
creation; and what it means to follow Jesus’
‘strange way’. In an era where many voices
compete for attention, these are foundational
studies that ground what it means to be
Christian. Every UCA small group will find
them exhilarating.

Conferences
The Apostles’ Creed
A series of 9 sermons by Ben Myers at Leichardt Uniting
Church, which covers the key expressions of the Creed
and could be used by discussion groups.
http://www.faith-theology.com/p/sermons.html
Several conferences have also been planned for 2014 and these link up well with the emphasis on teaching and
learning. This applies to Ministers, who are able to take two weeks study leave to engage in some form of continuing
education, and to all members of the church who are encouraged to be lifelong learners as disciples of Jesus Christ.
National Conference on Mission and Evangelism - “A Clear Call”
(Friday 28 – Sunday 30 March) to be held in Adelaide.
This conference came from a desire expressed at the first national Young Adult Leaders’ Conference in February 2012 which was taken up by the National
Mission and Evangelism Network. The main speakers will be John and Olive Drane from Scotland. This conference is open to anyone but particularly those
involved in leadership, ministry, missional innovation and in service across a variety of contexts – congregations, schools, agencies.
Uniting College for Leadership and Theology will offer an intensive on mission and leadership as an adjunct to the conference in the week that follows, with the
Dranes as the key leaders.
Following the pattern of previous Presidents, there will be three National Ministers’ Conferences in 2014. These will be as follows:
Charleville
(30 June – 4 July) with a focus on renewed commitment to remote Australia.
Sydney
(21-25 July) with a focus on “living faith and life cross culturally.”
Jerusalem
(22-26 September) with a focus on the foundations of faith and ministry in Biblical history and geography, the challenges of witnessing to
Christ among people of other faiths, and the UCA’s continuing commitment to fellowship and solidarity with the Palestinian Christian community.
The Doctrine working group, in conjunction with the United Theological College and Uniting Mission and Education, will hold “back to back” conferences on the
Basis of Union and Preaching to enable people to attend both easily.
Basis of Union – “catalyst for renewal”
(Friday 22 – Sunday 24 August) to be held in Sydney at the Centre for Ministry. Andrew Dutney will deliver the opening address. There will be input
sessions and opportunities for discussion. This conference will be something of a follow up to the successful conference held in Melbourne a few years
ago.
“Preaching for Transformation”
(Monday 25 – Thursday 28 August) to be held in Sydney at the Centre for Ministry. Anna Carter Florence from Columbia Theological Seminary in the USA
will be the main speaker. There will be various electives and reflection times to engage in.
These conferences will constitute Seminar week for the NSW/ACT Synod in 2014.
