援を行ってきた国際基督教大学（ICU）。
「全ては学生
のため」。
その支援の在り方を問い続ける中で、社会の
動きに呼応し、新たな取り組みが始まっている。
From its very beginnings, International Christian University
( ICU ) has provided wide-ranging academic support services
that respect each student’s goals and needs, and we have
continued to strive for a support system that embodies our
students-first philosophy. As part of this process, the
university is responding to social and global trends with an
ambitious new academic support initiative.

ICUが取り組んできた学修支援の根幹にあるもの、それはキリス
ト教主義に基づいた「一人ひとりを大切にする」という考え方であ
る。1953年の献学当初から、ICUでは他大学に先駆けて学生の教
育に重きが置かれ、中でも全人的な教育がいち早く実践されてき
た。教員中心、研究中心の時代において、教職員が学生一人ひとり
の尊厳や個性を尊重したことは、今日に至る大学の確かな土台を
形作ったと言える。
さらに、国際性豊かなICUにおいて、
「一人ひとりを大切にする」
ことは、いかなるバックグラウンドを持つ学生にも個別に向き合う
ことを意味する。母語の違いのみならず、社会人学生や帰国生、外
国籍学生など、さまざまな背景を持つ学生が集うキャンパス。言語

A commitment to valuing and nurturing each individual,
grounded in the teachings of Christianity, has been the driving
force behind ICU’s academic support program over the years.
From its beginnings in 1953, ICU differentiated itself as a
student-centered teaching university, and it was among the
first Japanese universities to put into practice the concept of
educating the “whole person.” At a time when faculty-centered,
research-centered universities were the norm, ICU faculty
valued the dignity and individuality of each student, laying a
firm foundation for today’s university.
At ICU, with its international orientation, valuing and
nurturing each individual meant engaging one-on-one with
every student, regardless of background. This was a campus
where students of various nationalities, languages, and
backgrounds—including Japanese students educated abroad
or continuing their education—could gather for interdisciplinary
や文化の異なる学生も、障がいのある学生も違いを受け入れて尊
重し合い、学問分野の枠を超えた学びに挑む。多種多様な個が躍
動するリベラルアーツ・カレッジにとって、それぞれの学生の課題や
ニーズに応えるためのサポートは不可欠なものだった。
以来、60年あまりに及ぶ歴史の中で、徹底した少人数教育のも
と、時代に合わせて特徴的な学修支援が行われてきた。ICUにおけ
るあらゆる支援の要は、
「対話」である。答えを与えるのではなく、
学生の声に耳を傾け、濃密な対話を通して自らの道を見いだす手
助けを行う。それこそが、学生が自由に考えながら主体的に学ぶ
リベラルアーツ教育の体現であり、一人ひとりと向き合い続けると
いう教育理念の表れでもあった。

of cultural differences or individual disabilities. For a liberal
arts college embracing such a diverse group of students, it
was vital to provide academic support tailored to the goals
and needs of each individual.
In the more than 60 years since its founding, ICU has
continued to provide individualized academic support adapted
to the changing times in the context of an uncompromising
commitment to small-group education. Dialogue is the keystone
of this support program. The idea is not to provide the
answers but to listen to students and help them find their own
way through in-depth dialogue. This approach embodies the
ideal of a liberal arts education, in which students are
encouraged to think for themselves and learn independently,
as well as ICU’s own educational philosophy of engaging
individually with each student.

より多様で、より自由な学びをサポートする
受け入れるために「ユニヴァーサル・アドミッションズ」という新た

な入学者選抜の枠組みを設ける。言わば学修「背景」と学修「目的」
system designed to facilitate admissions of a diverse range
of students from all around the world. As the academic
backgrounds and goals of our students grow more diverse
year by year, the academic challenges they face are
becoming more varied and complex as well.
Meanwhile, amid a growing emphasis on independent
and active learning, the university recognizes a need to
support learning outside the classroom. ICU has already
made considerable progress in supporting alternative
learning environments by providing access to lecture videos,
e-learning resources, and the Learning Commons, but we
need more content and a greater variety of learning tools and
settings to meet the needs of each of our students.
With these challenges in mind, the Center for Teaching
and Learning (CTL) was established in April 2015 as a hub for
the university’s wide-ranging academic support functions.
The CTL brings various units under one umbrella so as to
strengthen the support apparatus while maintaining and
building on existing services. By backing up each student’s
learning in a consolidated, university-wide effort, the goal is
to pave the way for everyone to achieve, regardless of
background, academic challenges, or physical or mental
disabilities. This is the latest chapter in our drive for continuous
improvement, but it is not the last. ICU will continue to enhance
its academic support program to unleash the boundless
potential of each and every student.
の両方が多様化する中で、支援を受ける学生が抱える問題は、
具体的な取り組みとして、献学当初より導入された教員アドヴァ
イザー制度をはじめ、言語環境や教育背景が異なる学生に対する
個別の対応や、障がいのある学生への特別学修支援など、さまざ
まな専門的支援が行われてきた。近年では、2008年の教学改革に
よりメジャー制に移行したことを受け、履修計画やメジャー（専修
分野）選択の相談窓口となるアカデミックプランニング・センター
を開設。2010年には図書館内に論文・レポート執筆のアドヴァイ
スを行うライティングサポートデスクも設置し、学びの仕組みにつ
いての理解を促し、学生が自立的・主体的に学ぶためのきめ細かな
支援を行っている。
一人ひとりを尊重するという原点はそのままに、時代に合わせて
支援の形を進化させてきたICU。そして現在、さらなるグローバル
化の進展により、以前にも増して多様な背景を持つ学生が集い始
めている。加えて、メジャー制度の導入により選択肢が増えたこと
で、学生の学びの可能性が大きく広がる一方、より一層学生自身に
主体性や計画性が求められる現状もある。さらにICUでは、2017
年度からより多様な教育背景を持つ学生を日本を含む全世界から
In keeping with this policy, ICU developed a wide range of
specialized support mechanisms to meet the needs of various
students at different levels. These included the faculty advisor
system, which dates back to the university’s beginnings,
individual support for students with different linguistic or
educational backgrounds, and support for students with
special needs. More recently, with the institution of majors
under the academic reform of 2008, the university opened the
Academic Planning Center to help students with course
planning and selection of major(s). The library’s Writing
Support Desk, established in 2010 to coach students on
preparation of written reports and theses, promotes better
understanding of learning processes and provides personalized
assistance to support independent, self-directed learning.
In this way, academic support at ICU has evolved with the
times while preserving the fundamental principle of respect
for the individual. Today ICU is adapting to new challenges.
Amid the rising tide of globalization, a more diverse student
body than ever before is assembling on our campus. With
introduction of the major system, these students have more
educational options than ever before. While this expands their
possibilities of learning, students also need to exercise more
initiative and plan more carefully. In academic year 2017, ICU
will be starting a new Universal Admissions screening

年々、多様かつ複合的になってきているのである。
また一方で、アクティヴラーニングの重要性が叫ばれる中にあっ
て、より主体的な学びを推進するためには、教室外の学修を支援
することも必要だ。すでに授業動画の配信やe-learningの活用、
ラーニングコモンズなどの学修環境整備が進んでいるが、個々の
ニーズに対応できるよう、より充実した、より多様なツールの提供
や環境の整備を進めていかなければならない。
以上のような背景を踏まえ、2015年4月、あらゆる学修支援機
能の中核となる学修・教育センター（CTL：Center for Teaching
and Learning）が新設された。既存の支援の形を生かしながら、
さまざまな部署を統合し、支援体制を強化。一人ひとりの学修を大
学全体として支えることで、多様な背景を持つ学生、学修において
困難を抱える学生、身体や精神に障がいのある学生が、よりスムー
ズに学ぶことを可能にする。絶えず変革に挑み続ける大学が踏み
出した、学修支援における次なる一歩。一人ひとりの学生が持つ無
限の可能性を引き出すため、ICUはこれからもサポートの充実に
取り組み続ける。

学修・教育センターを核とした、包括的な支援体制を構築

学修・教育センターは、学内のさまざまな機能を統合して学生と
教員のトータルな支援を実現するとともに、学修につながる教育環
境の継続的な改善を推進することを目的として開設された。
アカデミックプランニングや障がいのある学生へのサポート、
そしてライティングサポートなど、これまで別々のオフィスで行われ
てきた機能の連携を図り、学修・教育センターがハブとしての役割
を担う。これにより学生の利便性が高まるほか、教職員間で情報を
共有することで、一人ひとりが抱える課題やニーズを把握した上で
相談に応じ、適切な支援をタイムリーに提供できるようになる。さ
らに、ICT（Information and Communication Technology）の
活用を推進し、これまで以上にアクティブな学びを可能にするコン
テンツも整備。併せて調査・分析・研究や教員の教育支援を行い、
教育の質を継続的に高め、学生の学修を総合的に支えていく。

CTL was established with the aim of bringing the university’s
varied support services under one umbrella and providing
comprehensive support for students and faculty while promoting
continuous improvement of the educational environment
conducive to learning.
In its role as the university’s academic support hub, the
CTL works to coordinate and link existing support services,
including academic planning, support for students with
disabilities, and writing support. In addition to making it easier
for students to seek such services, this facilitates the sharing
of information among faculty and staff members, so that they
can offer guidance tailored to the individual and provide the
support each student needs in a timely manner. The CTL is
also working to provide a greater array of digital course
materials using the latest information and communication
technology so as to support a more active style of learning. In
addition, it conducts surveys, research, and analyses and
provides instructional support to faculty members to promote
continuous improvement in the quality of education. In this
way, the CTL provides comprehensive support for student
learning and achievement.

ICUの学修支援を担う、学修・教育センター長、教養学部副部長（学修支援担当）
とアカデミックプランニン
グ・センター長が、学修支援のルーツと現在の動向、今後のヴィジョンについて語り合いました。

国籍の違いや障がいの有無、あらゆる個性に応じて「奉仕」する

オルバーグ ICUの学修支援における理念を語る上で注目すべき
は、献学当初から多様な国籍の人々が集うインターナショナルな環
境があったこと。そのため、立場を超えた共同体意識や、差別への
反対意識が強く根付いています。さらに、その根幹には、悩める人
に手を差し伸べるキリスト教の精神があります。
小林 キリスト教の精神とは、つまり神と人に奉仕するということ

小瀬 それを実現できたのは、1学年600人程度の小さな大学で、
一人ひとりの顔が見える環境であることも大きいでしょう。学ぶ分
野や所属の垣根を超えて、教員と学生の距離が近いからこそ、個々
人とじっくり向き合うことができるのだと思います。
小林 ICUは日本で初めて、化学を専攻する全盲の学生を受け入
れた大学なのです。一般的に目が見えないと実験が中心になる化
学を学ぶのは難しいものですが、当時の先生方は、学生のために一
つひとつプログラムを用意されたというから驚きです。
小瀬 確か1983年のことでしたね。現在、障がいを持つ学生に対
する支援は、特別学修支援室が中心となって行っています。同じ視
覚障がいを持つ学生でも、点字が読める人もいれば読めない人も

いて、障がいの程度や本人の希望によって必要なサポートは異なり
ます。学生が10人いれば10通りの支援の形があり、それを地道に
続けてきたのがICUという大学なのです。
Alberg: When we talk about ICU’s philosophy surrounding
student learning support, it is important to remember that the
university has been operating in an international environment
with people of diverse nationalities ever since it was founded.
For that reason, we have an ingrained sense of community that
transcends differences of opinion and stance, and a deep-rooted
opposition to any form of discrimination. This is underpinned by
the Christian spirit, extending a helping hand to anyone in need.
Kobayashi: The Christian spirit is all about serving God and
other people. So, the most important thing when an ICU
student comes for help is to show that we are here to serve
the student, not just to resolve the problem for them.
Kose: One of the reasons ICU was able to do this was because
we only accept roughly 600 students in each year and knew
each of the students individually. That makes it easier to
transcend different fields of study or affiliations and bridge the
gap between student and faculty in order to attend carefully
and caringly to each individual’s specific needs.
Kobayashi: ICU was among the first Japanese universities
to accept a totally blind student who wanted to major in
chemistry. Generally speaking, if you cannot see, it would be
difficult to study a subject such as chemistry, with its strong
focus on practical experiments, but the faculty at the time
prepared a special program for each step of learning for that
student, which is amazing.
Kose: That was in 1983 wasn’t it? Today, support for students
with disabilities is administered largely by the office of Special
Needs Support Services (SNSS). However, even among
visually impaired students, the level of support that each
student requires varies widely depending on whether they
read braille or not, the severity of their disability and their
individual wishes. At ICU, ten students would have ten different
support plans, implemented consistently and patiently.

「点」ではなく「円」で支える支援へ
小瀬 その通りです。最近は発達障害や学習障害の認知も進み、こ

解決できるのか分からなければ、まずは学修・教育センターに来て
Kobayashi: With a comparatively free liberal arts education,
it is vital that we offer students help with their course selection
and course load. This Academic Planning Center is responsible
for offering this support. Instead of just asking a student what
they want to do, we explore carefully why they want to do
something and what their ultimate aims are. It is also important
that we don’t easily show them the answers to their questions.
In other words, we don’t just give the student a fish, rather, we
teach the student how to fish for themselves. And, we also get
them to think in depth about why they want to catch a fish in
the first place.
Alberg: Faculty advisors also play an important role in
helping students decide how to direct their studies. Currently,
each faculty advisor is responsible for advising approximately
30 students. If asked for advice about something they don’t
feel qualified to answer, they will introduce another faculty
member with more knowledge of that specific topic.
Kose: Personally, I take notes on my discussions with individual
students and review the notes before I meet them the next time.
The students look happy and comfortable when they find that
I remember and understand what they said. We have built various
different support systems over the years, such as the Academic
Planning Center and our faculty advisor system, but they all
work separately. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
was born from our realization that student concerns and aspirations
were diversifying and that we needed to combine various
support functions to provide even more comprehensive support.
Kobayashi: The thinking behind all of this is that we have offered
individual points of support in the past, and now it is time to
join those dots together to provide a “full circle” of support.
小林 自由度の高いリベラルアーツ教育において、履修支援は必
要不可欠です。それを担うのがアカデミックプランニング・センター
ですが、相談業務では「何がしたいのか」だけでなく、
「その目的は
何か」を丹念にヒアリングするようにしています。さらに、安易に答
えを示さないことも大切です。つまり、
「魚を与えるのではなく、魚
の獲り方を教える」
。そして「そもそも魚を獲る目的は何か」まで徹
底的に考えてもらうのです。
オルバーグ 学びの方向性を決めるにあたっては、教員アドヴァイ
ザーも重要な役割を担っています。現在は、一人の教員が約30人
の学生を担当している状態。自分の専門外の相談が来た場合は、そ
の分野に精通した教員を紹介するなどして対応しています。
小瀬 私の場合は学生の相談内容をメモし、毎回会う前に復習し
ます。学生も理解してくれていると安心し、嬉しそうな顔をします
ね。アカデミックプランニング・センターやアドヴァイザー制度をは
じめ、これまで多彩な支援制度を設けてきましたが、各々が個別に
動いていました。学生の悩みや志向も多様化しており、より包括的
に支援する必要があると考えた結果誕生したのが、学修・教育セン
ターです。
小林 さまざまな「点」で支えてきたのを、これからは点と点が結
ばれた「円」でサポートしようという発想ですね。
10人いれば10通りの支援の形があるため、
ほしい。対話を通して一緒に考えて、解決策を探れたらと思います。
オルバーグ 2015年4月の開設以来、部署を超えて教職員が集ま
り、定期的に会議を行っています。既存の支援の良い形は活かしな
がら、より良い連携の形を探っているところです。
小林 成果の一例を挙げると、特別学修支援室とアカデミックプ
ランニング・センターの情報共有が進んだことで、障がいを持つ学
生の状況を把握した上でスムーズに履修計画を支援できたケースが
ありました。このような連携の形を少しずつ増やしていきたいですね。
大学教育が変革する中で、今後目指すべき学修支援とは

オルバーグ 教員が一方的に教える時代は終わり、これからは学
生自身がいかに理解し、いかに学ぶかが重要なテーマ。アクティヴ
ラーニングのためのリソースが充実している現在、これらをどう活
用していくかが問われています。また、ICUは文部科学省の「スー
パーグローバル大学創成支援」に採択され、今後英語の授業が増
えていきます。この点でも、ICTの活用が期待され、その推進を担う
学修・教育センターが鍵を握ることになるでしょう。

Academic Planning Center
どんな科目を履修し、どんなメジャーを選び、4年間をどのようにデザインし
ていくかを学生自らが考える「アカデミックプランニング」。センターでは、履
修からメジャー選択などの相談に応じ、学生が主体的に学びに取り組むため
の支援を行う。個々の学生が学びの目的や振り返りをまとめるアカデミック
プランニング・エッセイの内容も把握し、アドヴァイジングに活用している。

Academic planning is all about encouraging students to consider for
themselves what subjects to study, what major to choose and how to
design their four years at university. The Center offers broad advice
on course selection and choosing their majors, and encourages
students to be proactive in their learning. We pay close attention to
students’ academic planning essays summarizing their study aims
and reflections, and offer a variety of advisory services.
Alberg: Gone are the days when faculty taught in isolation,
regardless of what the students were thinking. Today, the important
consideration is just how much students themselves are
understanding and absorbing. We have ample academic planning
resources now, and so the question is how do we use these
resources most efficiently and effectively? As part of the Top
Global University Project run by the Ministry of Education, Culture,
Sports Science and Technology, ICU will be increasing the
number of lectures and lessons conducted in English. ICT offers
a whole range of possibilities and the CTL will be key to its promotion.

Ten individual students will require ten different support programs,
so we need to listen carefully to each and every one.
Kose: That is right. Developmental and learning disabilities are
now more broadly acknowledged and so we should support students
with such difficulties. If a student doesn’t know where to go to get
help, we would like them to come to the CTL as the first port of call.
We would then discuss issues together and explore the best solution.
Alberg: Since the CTL was established in April 2015, we have
been able to get faculty members and staff from different departments
together for regular discussions. We are now exploring ways to
preserve the best features of our existing support systems, and
also improve cooperation between the various support services.
Kobayashi: I’d like to give you a positive example of successful
cooperation between support groups. Thanks to enhanced sharing of
information between the office of Special Needs Support Services
and the Academic Planning Center, we were able to offer smoother
course planning support based on a better grasp of the specific
difficulties that a disabled student was facing. We want to build on these
successful examples so we can offer more comprehensive support.

特別学修支援室
The Office of Special Needs Support Services
障がいのある学生に対し、学修面のサポートを実施。教員に対して必要な
配慮の依頼を行うほか、教科書、資料の点訳なども担当。学生サポーターも
多く、ノートテイクや学内移動のヘルプを行う。2016年4月からは学生サ
ポーターの有志が「ICU Support Support」という団体を立ち上げ、障が
いのある学生が、障がいのない学生と平等に大学生活が送れるよう、サポー
ト活動をより学内に広めるための活動を推進している。
We offer a range of study support tailored to the specific needs of individual students with
disabilities. Positioned between the student and the teaching staff, we can request necessary
consideration and adjustments as regards lessons and examinations. If necessary, we can process
or translate the teaching materials used in lessons into braille, or even read lesson material aloud.
We have a large number of student supporters who can assist with note talking, written
preparations, and moving around the school. In April 2016, voluntary student supporters launched
the ICU Support x Support group to promote wider support activities within the university, and
ensure that students with disabilities get to enjoy the same student life as able-bodied students.

Kose: As a basic premise, we really hope that students who
receive support with their learning will then offer to help others
in broader society. We also encourage students to participate
in learning support. Already, we see how effective students can
be as active participants in the ICU Brothers and Sisters (IBS)
student advisory service and as student supporters for the
office of Special Needs Support Services. Furthermore, some
IBS don’t just help out, but use their full understanding of
ICU’s educational philosophy to help drive university education
per se. It’s great to see.
Kobayashi: Paradoxically, it would seem that our ultimate
aim is to make ourselves obsolete. Ideally, we would like to
see students who received support becoming the supporters,
and for this network of student support to permeate the entire
campus. That support would be based upon the philosophies
cultivated at ICU and on the Christian spirit of service and
support.
小瀬 大前提として、支援を受けた学生たちには、社会に出たら世
のため、人のために誰かを支える側になってほしいですね。学修支
援への学生参加も進んでおり、学生による学生のためのアドヴァイ
ジング制度「ICU Brothers and Sisters（IBS）

の学生サポーターなどを見ても、彼らの力は大きいです。中でも
IBSは単にお手伝いをしているのではなく、ICUの教育理念をしっ

小林 逆説的に表現すると、私たちの究極の目標は、自分たちが必
要なくなること。支援を受けた人が支援する側に回る、そんな学生
間での支え合いがキャンパス中に広がることが理想です。そして、
そうした支援の根本となるのは、やはりICUが培ってきた理念と、

先生との対話の中で、進むべき道が見えてくる
Finding a path to pursue through dialogues with advisors
カリキュラムの自由度が高いICUでは、自ら学ぶ内容を決め、履
修プランを組み立てていく必要があります。その分迷いが生じるこ
とも多いため、何でも相談できるアドヴァイザーの先生は、とても
キリスト教の奉仕の精神なのだと思います。
心強い存在です。毎学期の履修登録の際に面談があり、その他にも
普段から不安に思うことがあれば、都度研究室を訪問してアドヴァ
イスをいただいています。客観的な意見は常に参考になりますし、
定期的に対話を重ねることで、
「何を学びたいのか」
「4年間をどう
過ごしたいのか」といった自分の考えを改めて見つめ直す機会にも
なっています。
入学当初は経済学メジャーを志望していましたが、海外で暮らし
支援を受けた学生が支援する側に回るサイクル。

ジャーアドヴァイザーの先生に改めて相談し、さまざまなお話を伺
う中で、最終的にメジャーは社会学、マイナーで経済学を選択しま
した。世の中の事象を客観的に分析する社会学の切り口で、複数の
集団の狭間にいる人々に迫ってみたいと思います。

ばれる学生アドヴァイザーたちが、学生と同じ目線を持つ頼れる先輩とし
て、学生生活や履修、メジャー選択など、幅広い相談に応じる。アカデミック
プランニング・センター内で相談窓口を設けているほか、新入生のための相
談会やICUの理念を共有するイベントなども独自に企画し、自発的に活動
を行っている。

This is an advisory system run by students for students. Student
advisors, known as peer advisors, offer advice, as older members of the
student community with similar perspectives, on a range of issues from
student life and study to choice of major. The ICU Brothers and Sisters
have a permanent advice desk in the Academic Planning Center, and
they also plan various activities autonomously, including discussion
forums for new students and events where new students can share ICU’s
philosophy on education and service.
活用しています。ICUらしいと感じるのは、どんな場面においても学
生と先生の距離が近く、相談するのが当たり前という雰囲気があると
ころです。学業や学生生活をより楽しむためのサポートが充実してい
て、知的好奇心を存分に追求できる環境があることに感謝しています。
At ICU, where the curriculum allows for a high degree of freedom,
students need to choose what they want to study and put together
a course plan of their own. This could be difficult at times, but
whenever we get lost or anxious about something, we can always
turn to our advisors who are there to help us out. In addition to the
consultation we have with our faculty advisor prior to registering
courses every semester, we can visit their office to seek advice
whenever we have any concerns. Our advisors would offer
objective views that are always useful. Besides, having a dialogue
with the advisor once in a while provides us with a good
opportunity to reflect on matters such as what I want to study and
how I want to spend my four years in college.
When I first entered ICU, I wanted to major in economics, but
due to my experience living abroad, I was also interested in the
issue of ethnic minorities such as mixed race people. So I consulted
my academic advisor and advisors of different majors. After
talking with them, I finally decided to choose sociology as my
major and economics as minor. I would like to dig into the issue of
marginal people between different groups from a sociological
perspective to objectively analyze it as a social phenomenon.
I have also consulted IBS about my course plan shortly after
entering college. I also use other support services whenever
necessary, such as the Writing Support Desk for advice on
writing and the ICU OpenCourseWare for viewing class videos.
What I think is characteristic of ICU is that there is an intimate
atmosphere that puts students and faculty close to each other on
any occasion, making you naturally want to consult them. I am
very grateful for being offered such abundant support for
academic learning and student life and to be in an environment
where we are allowed to freely pursue intellectual curiosity.

Careers of 2015 ICU Graduates
2015年度教養学部卒業生は597名、うち594名から進路報告
がありました。
進路報告があった卒業生の進路傾向は、就職（常勤以外も含
む）424名（71％）、進学96名（16％）、その他74名（13％）。就職
希望者に対する就職者の割合である就職率は95.1％でした。産
業分類に基づく進路の内訳はP15の通りです。

Of the 597 students who graduated from the College of Liberal
Arts in academic year 2015, we have received reports from 594
regarding their paths since graduation.
According to their reports, 424 (71%) were employed (either
full-time or otherwise), 96 (16%) were pursuing further education,
and 74 (13%) were involved in “other” activities. The employment
rate among those seeking jobs was 95.1%. The breakdown of
employment by sector is provided on page 16.

就職者は増加。多様性豊かなICUの環境が就職時の価値形成につながる

就職者の割合は増加。就職の傾向としては、業種別では例年通り、
外資日系の別を問わずコンサルティングなど専門情報サービスを
含むサービス業、続いて情報通信業への就職が多いものの、実に
多様です。また、学生との面談を通じて感じることは、留学経験が
有る無しにかかわらずICUというダイヴァーシティに富む環境
に身をおくことで、対話を繰り返し「社会に対する自身の使命とは
何か」
（mission）、
「どれほどの情熱を持ってそれをなせるのか」
（passion）、さらに「どのような行動を起こせるのか」(action)を
問い続けています。そして、自分なりの答えを見いだし、就職先を
選択しているということです。
A higher percentage of graduates found employment. By industry,
the top job destinations for CLA graduates continue to be in the
service sector, including various consulting and specialized
information services (both Japanese and foreign companies),
followed by the information and communications sector. That
said, the diversity of career paths is striking. Talking with
students, we can see that as a result of studying in the richly
diverse environment of ICU, regardless of whether they have studied
overseas, they naturally develop the habit of repeated dialogue.
Based on this experience, our students repeatedly ask themselves,
-What is my mission vis-à-vis society? How much passion can I
bring to the fulfillment of that mission? What sort of action can I
take to make a difference in the world? The answers they arrive
at individually determine the type of employment they choose.

The percentage of graduates pursuing further education declined
slightly, though just as many students as ever were considering
advanced studies when they began charting their post-graduation
paths. Generally speaking, those who went on to graduate school
or specialized undergraduate programs are the ones who had
come to see clearly, in the course of their undergraduate experience,
why advanced studies made sense for them. A substantial number
of our graduates also look on postgraduate education as a future
step on the way to their long-term goal of employment at an international
agency. They intend to find a suitable area of expertise through job
experience before enrolling in a graduate or professional program.

awaiting admission to overseas academic programs, those preparing
for the civil service examination, and those who have elected to go
abroad to pursue their dreams instead of opting immediately for

we applaud people with the courage to seek self-realization by
looking beyond society’s ready-made choices and carving out their
own future. We continue to offer support services for our alumni, no

人生を変えた師からの言葉
通訳・翻訳研究を手掛けるカレン・ベヴァリー先生と、
カレン先生の授業で訳すことの面白さと奥深さを知っ
たという畠中詩穂さんにお話を伺いました。
学びは苦しむものでも強制されるものでもなく、楽しむもの
Learning should be a pleasure, not a chore
We sat down with Professor Beverley Curran, a specialist
in translation studies, and CLA student Shiho Hatanaka,
who discovered fascinating new dimensions to translation
in Professor Curran’s course.
カレン先生との出会い
Meeting Professor Curran
畠中 2年次になってJLP（日本語教育プログラム）が終わり、興味
Hatanaka I enrolled in Professor Curran’s course “Introduction
to Interpreting and Translation” in my second year, just when I
had finished the JLP (Japanese Language Programs) curriculum
and was casting about for an area of study that really
interested me. I had had occasion to interpret for my parents
when we were living in the United States, so I had this idea
that interpretation and translation was a simple matter of
converting one language to another. Professor Curran’s class
introduced me to translation as something much broader and
deeper than that, and I was fascinated by it.
Curran Translation isn’t just one thing; there are many kinds
of translation. Moreover, it’s something we all deal with in our
own lives, even within the same language. For example,
when speaking to a child, you might express the idea of
“aquarium” using simpler words, like “a fish park.” That’s a
type of translation. Shifting between British and American
English, or between the kanji, katakana, and hiragana writing
systems—all that falls within the scope of translation. Then
there is media translation. With the same content being
adapted to a variety of media—film, TV drama, anime, video
games—we can see how translations vary from one medium
to the next.
Hatanaka In Professor Curran’s class, we watched a series
of films, including King Kong and High School Musical, and it
was fascinating to learn that their plots were all the same as
“Beauty and the Beast.” I realized that the process of
adapting a story to a different setting or era was also a form
of translation.
Curran That’s an example of “cultural translation.” Why do
we tell the same stories over and over? It’s because they say
something important to us. “Beauty and the Beast” is a story
about who we are allowed to love. The love object may be a
monster or beast, or it may be someone of a different nationality
or faith, but although it is the same story, new questions are
raised in every adaptation.
のある分野を探し始めていた時に出会ったのが、カレン先生の「通訳
翻訳入門（Introduction to Interpreting and Translation）
」という
授業です。アメリカで暮らしていた時に親の通訳をする機会もあった
私にとって、通訳・翻訳とは単に「ある言語を違う言語に変換するも
の」という認識でした。しかしカレン先生の授業を通して、もっと幅広
く、そして深遠な通訳・翻訳の世界を知り、一気に魅了されました。
カレン 一口に通訳・翻訳といっても、さまざまな種類があります。
そして、それは生きていく上で常に関わり続けるものです。例えば
同じ言語でも、子どもに対して「水族館」を「お魚さんの公園」など
と簡単に言い換える場合がありますが、これも翻訳の一つ。また、
イギリス英語からアメリカ英語への変換や、漢字・片仮名・平仮名と
いった表記の変化も翻訳の範疇です。さらに現在では、一つのコン
テンツが映画、ドラマ、アニメ、ゲームといった多様なメディアに展
開されることが多いですが、ここでも媒体によって異なる翻訳、つ
まり「メディアトランスレーション」が行われています。
畠中 授業の中で、
「キングコング」
「ハイスクール・ミュージカル」
などいくつかの映画を観て、これらは全て「美女と野獣」と同じ話だ
と教わったのも面白かったです。一つのストーリーを、時代や設定
を変えてリメイクすることも翻訳なのだと知りました。
カレン それは「文化翻訳」ですね。我々はなぜ、同じ話を繰り返し
語るのか。それは、何か大切なものが語られているからです。
「美女
と野獣」は、私たちは誰を愛するのかについての物語です。愛する
対象はモンスターや動物であったり、国や宗教が違う相手だったり
さまざまですが、リメイクが繰り返される中で、変わらず普遍的な
問いやメッセージが込められているのです。

畠中 高校までの授業は教科書とにらめっこをして「やらないとい

as a chore, a kind of staring contest between me and the
textbook. To find my intellectual curiosity stimulated as it was
in Professor Curran’s class was something new. By the same
token, I tended to think of the senior thesis as a painful and
unpleasant chore, and frankly, I was dreading the whole
process. But when I talked to Professor Curran about
choosing a theme for my thesis, she said, “Do it on something
that interests you, something you’ll enjoy. Otherwise, it will
just be an ordeal, and you won’t be able to write a good
thesis.” It had never occurred to me before then that one
might enjoy writing a senior thesis.
Curran I feel that my most important job as an educator is
not to deprive students of the joy of learning. Translation as a
career requires a lot of time and effort, and unless you love it,
you’re not going to be able to keep it up. The same applies to

To the Professors:
What is Liberal Arts?
同じ。楽しんで情熱を傾ければ、結果は自然と違ってくると思いま
す。何でもいいから1年間向き合い続けられる、好きなテーマを選ん
でほしいですね。
畠中 好きなものと言われて、真っ先に思い浮かんだのは漫画でし
た。しかし、漫画はあくまで娯楽であり学びとは真逆のものという
概念が強かったのですが、先生は全く構わないと言ってくださり、
一緒に卒論のアウトラインを考えてくださいました。その日から、卒
論に取り組むことが楽しみになり、現状では漫画の『ONE PIECE』
をテーマにしたいと考えているところです。
カレン 各国の言語で訳され、メディア展開も多い『ONE PIECE』
は私も興味深い作品だと思っています。日本語版と英語版を比較す
るだけでもたくさんの発見があり、一つの訳から、日本と英語圏の
文化や歴史の違いや、日本の漫画文化が海外でどう受け取られて
learning. When people enjoy what they’re studying and are
excited about it, that naturally comes through in the results. I
don’t care what topic my students choose as long as they like
it well enough to devote themselves to it for a year.
Hatanaka When she said to choose something I like, the
thing that came immediately to mind was manga. But I had
this notion that manga were just for amusement—exactly the
opposite of study. Professor Curran told me that manga
would be absolutely fine, and she helped me outline a thesis
proposal. Since that day, I’ve been looking forward to doing
my senior thesis. At this point, I’m planning to write it on the
manga One Piece.
Curran One Piece is a fascinating work that has been
translated into multiple languages and adapted in various
media. You could make all kinds of discoveries just by
comparing the Japanese and English print editions. One
translation can tell us a lot about historical and cultural
differences between Japan and the English-speaking world
and the way Japanese manga culture is received overseas.

me, with her ideas about studying what you enjoy, and also
the way she works each day to make the subject interesting
to her students, such as by using materials like manga,
anime, and picture books in the classroom and giving unusual
assignments. My immediate goal is to write a decent senior
thesis, but I also want to try my hand at a number of things I
may never get a chance to try again and enjoy college life to
the full before these four years are up.
Curran I believe that the study and practice of interpretation
and translation can help people understand the process of
change. Change can be frightening, but it can also be fun,
and it’s really important. The present shapes the future.
That's why I think that taking advantage of the present
environment to try your hand at whatever you want to do, and
putting your heart and soul into something you love, is the key
to a good college experience and a good life beyond that. Pay
attention to process; to how you do things.
されている姿にはいつも感銘を受けています。目先の目標は納得の
いく卒論を書き上げることですが、4年間を終えるまでに、学生の
間にしかできないことに挑戦し、全力で大学生活を楽しみたいと思
います。
カレン 通訳や翻訳をすること、学ぶことは、変化を理解するのに
役立つと思います。変化するのは怖いかもしれませんが、とても大
切で、楽しいことでもあります。そして、未来は今によって変化します。
何にでも挑戦できる今の環境を生かして、好きなものに精一杯情熱

昔から読書家で、舞台や映画にも興味があり、言葉から想像を膨
らませることが大好きでした。そして次第に、言葉と物事とのつな
がりや、言葉によってもたらされる変化、文化や人に与える影響に
は、カナダの作家マーガレット・アトウッド（Margaret Atwood）の

日々の授業も漫画やアニメ、絵本などを教材にしたり、ユニークな
翻訳は、より広い世界を知り、今と未来を考えるきっかけを与えてくれる
『スザナ・ムーディーの日記』という作品がきっかけです。初めての
土地に降り立った主人公が発した「私は外国語の言葉のようなも
のだ」という一言で、翻訳は文化的な広がりだけでなく、より広い
世界を教えてくれることに気付きました。クレム・ロビンズ（Clem
Robyns）が1995年の論文で述べているように、違う言語や新しい
言葉の扱い方は、新たに出会う人や考えの異なる人に対する接し
方を私たちに教えてくれるのです。
ICUに着任したのは、ちょうど子どもが大学生になり時間ができ
て、やりたいことに挑戦しようと思えたタイミングでした。この大学
では、親や友人、コミュニティのために、通訳や翻訳を日常的に行っ
ている学生が多くいます。しかし、バイリンガルであることと、通訳
や翻訳ができるということは別のこと。だからこそ、きちんとした知
識を教えたいと使命感を抱きました。また、翻訳では必要な情報が
全て原文にあるとは限らないため、広範囲にわたる知識が必要に
なります。その点においてリベラルアーツは、分野に捉われず幅広
く学べると同時に、物事の類似性や共通点を見いだすこともできる
ため、大変有用な学びだと思います。リベラルアーツで可能性を広
げながら、高い意欲を持って学ぶ学生たちに囲まれて、この大学で
通訳・翻訳を教える喜びを日々感じています。
言葉を通してさまざまな事象やその関係性に目を向ける翻訳研
究は、目まぐるしく動く世の中において少し立ち止まって考えるこ
とを知ることにつながります。その上で、今が未来にどういった影
響を与えるのかを考えるヒントも与えてくれます。学生の皆さんに
Even as a child, I was an enthusiastic reader, and I
enjoyed theater and film as well. I loved the way words
fired my imagination. Gradually, I became intrigued by
the relationship between words and things, and the
changes that language brings about—its influence on
culture and people. The first time I really started paying
attention to translation as a trope for immigration and
arrival was when I was reading Margaret Atwood’s
Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970) and came across the
line, “I am a word in a foreign language.” That line helped
me see that translation can not only expand our cultural
vistas but also teach us things about the wider world as
well. As Clem Robyns suggested in a 1995 article, the
way we treat texts that are new and different tells us a lot
about the way we treat people who are new or different,
or ideas.
I took this position at ICU at a time when my own
children had gone off to college, so I had more time to
think about pursuing other interests. Many of the students
here are already accustomed to interpreting and
translating for their parents, friends, or community. But
being bilingual isn’t the same as really knowing how to
translate or interpret. That’s why I feel a sense of mission
to impart a real understanding of the field. Translators also
need wide-ranging knowledge, because the information
they need to translate a text isn’t found just in the text
itself. In this sense, a liberal arts education is extremely
useful because it encourages students to study widely
across various disciplines and to discern underlying
connections and similarities. Every day I feel lucky to be
teaching translation and interpreting at this university,
surrounded by highly motivated students who are
expanding their own horizons through the liberal arts.
Amid the accelerated pace of today’s world, the field
of translation studies allows us to stop and think about
things by focusing our attention on the interaction of
various phenomena through language. It also hints at
ways to understand how the present impacts the future. I
would like my students to gain such insights from my
classes, but most of all, I would like them to experience
the excitement of the process of learning.

Public Lecture by Head of EUMM
On April 14, Ambassador Kęstutis Jankauskas, Head
of European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in
Georgia, delivered a public lecture as part of the course
"Politics and International Relations in Europe" taught
by Professor Takako Ueta (Politics, International Relations).
Special Lecture by Director of
the UNDP Representation Office in Tokyo
On April 15, Director Tetsuo Kondo of the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) Representation
Office in Tokyo was invited by the ICU Rotary Peace
Center to deliver lecture as part of the course “Introduction
to International Law” taught by Professor Osamu Arakaki
(Law, Director of Rotary Peace Center).

to promote the sharing of campus functions between
the two institutions to offer education actively utilizing
research and education resources of each other, and
in doing so, increase mobility of students and faculty,
carry out efforts to enhance research and education

Candlelight Service
On December 18, a candlelight service was held to
celebrate Christmas in the University Chapel. A student
choir sang with an orchestra, students studying in the
Sacred Music Center Organ Course played the organ,
and other student groups performed sacred music.

On March 30, ICU concluded a Comprehensive
Cooperation Agreement for promoting cooperation
and collaboration with the Nara Institute of Science
and Technology (NAIST, Ikoma City, Nara) to promote
the fostering of global human resources.
Inter-University Agreement
Concluded with University of Tsukuba
On April 6, ICU concluded an Inter-University
Cooperation Agreement with the University of Tsukuba
(Tsukuba City, Ibaraki). This Agreement is positioned

New Year’s Service
The 2016 New Year's Service was held at the
University Chapel on January 6. The service conducted
by Rev. Shoko Kitanaka began with a chorus of Hymn
"Ring Out, Wild Bells, to the Wild Sky" by all those in
attendance, and continued with a Scripture Reading of
Romans 12:3-8. Following the Scripture Reading,
President Junko Hibiya delivered her message.
2016 Spring Commencement Ceremony
and Matriculation Ceremony
485 undergraduate students and 20 graduate students
graduated from ICU at its spring commencement
ceremony held at the University Chapel on March 23.
During the ceremony, the Friends of ICU Award was
presented to two graduating students, Ms. Yuki Kurisu
and Mr. Ken Kuroki, in recognition of their exemplary
contribution to fulfilling ICU's mission.
ICU welcomed over 650 new undergraduate and
graduate students at its Spring 2016 Matriculation
Ceremony held at the university chapel on April 1. At
the end of the ceremony, all incoming students
continued a tradition established at ICU's founding by
swearing the "Student Pledge" to uphold the principles
of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
E-weeks
(ICU Environment Awareness Weeks)
ICU’s E-weeks ran from April 25 to May 11. A variety of
student-focused events were held, from nature walks
organized for people to enjoy and learn about the
trees, flowers and other greenery on campus, to
workshops that taught attendees about on-campus
efforts to improve the environment.

3つの教育ビジョンをミッションブルーのカラー
とキーメッセージに込め、ICUの特徴の一つであ
る豊かな自然を想起させるデザインの一部である
樹木は、一本一本のデザインを異なるものとし、
日本初のリベラルアーツ・カレッジとして、個を大
切にする質の高いリベラルアーツ教育を実践して
いる大学であることを表現しています。
Forming the brand image by placing
the logos with the key message
from the university
We collected opinions from students and all
faculty members to create new university logos.
The results revealed that the "60 th anniversary
logos" have been widely recognized and have
become familiar to many people. Therefore, we
redesign the logos while succeeding the design
of the "60 th anniversary logos."
Our three educational visions are put into the mission
blue color and key message. In addition, a design
reminiscent of ICU's rich natural environment, which
is one of ICU's features, has been newly added to
the logos. As for trees, a component of the design,
each one of them has different designs, which
represents that the university practices high quality
liberal arts education, which places importance on
individuals, as Japan's first liberal arts college.

Events
This is something I heard from the mother of a student
who graduated in March this year. “If you have another
school as your first choice, you should not apply to ICU
High School for insurance because the child will end
up saying he or she wants to study at ICUHS once he
or she visits the school.” I was told this by a Japanese
friend when my family stayed overseas earlier, and I
thought it was quite true when we first visited ICUHS
with my daughter.
In academic year 2016, we received the 39 th batch
of 264 students (capacity: 240 students). We have
students from a total of 60 countries now, if we take the
first, second and third year together. Our initiative as
the super global high school has entered its third year
and has been highly rated by the Ministry of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. With the
slogan of “ICU High School – from the world, to the
world,” we will continue to be united and march forward
this year. We look forward to continued support from all

Commencement Ceremony
On March 15, the 36th graduation ceremony was held at the
university chapel as 252 students graduated from the school.
Main universities where our students were accepted are as
follows (as of the end of April; including students who have
graduated earlier).
A total of 494 students secured admission to private
universities including ICU (116 students), Sophia University (45),
Waseda University (41), Keio University (38), Aoyama Gakuin
University (28), Rikkyo University (21), Meiji University (20) and
Tokyo University of Science (15). Total of 29 students were
accepted by national and public universities including Chiba
University (4), Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (4), Hitotsubashi
University (3), University of Tokyo (2), Tohoku University (2), Tokyo
Gakugei University (2), Tokyo Metropolitan University (2). Some 13
students passed the examination for universities abroad.
Matriculation Ceremony
On April 7, the 39 th matriculation ceremony was held
at the University Chapel and 264 new students were
welcomed to the school.
School Trips/Excursions/Retreats
The third-year students went for a 4-day, 3-night trip
to the Okinawa islands from April 26 through 29, the
second-year students went on a day trip to Mt. Fuji
Lake District, while the first-year students went for an
overnight retreat trip to Lake Kawaguchi.

I have been observing the positive attitude of each

I am enjoying every day in this feel-at-home school
culture, as in the Okinawan saying, “From the
moment we meet, we are already brothers.” I would

も満開を前に見ごろの状態。
多くの卒業生、

在校生が集まり、
華やかなリユニオン・
デーとなりました。
「桜祭り」
は、
総会、
DAY賞表彰式、
卒業50周年
記念、
懇親会から構成される同窓会イベントです。
今年で11年目となります。
礼拝堂で行われた総会とDAY賞表彰式には、

第10期生が「卒業50周年」
桜祭りでは毎年、
「卒業50周年」
の同窓生を招
待してお祝いします。
今年は10期の202人の卒業
生中41人の
「50周年卒業生」
が集まりました。
同
期を代表して白石隼男さんがスピーチに立った後、
折田昌子さんから日比谷学長に10期生からの寄
付金
（382万円）
が手渡されました。
大学食堂での懇親会には約180人が旧交を温
め、
新しい出会いを楽しみました。
同窓会会長メッセージ
同窓会のこの一年には、
いくつか目覚ましい展開が
ありました。
中堅若手有志
の集まりから始まった丸ノ内Style支部が、
都心部で定期的にイベントを開き異業種間
ネットワーキングの場を提供しています。
昨
年11月には村上陽一郎先生をお迎えして同
窓会初のリベラルアーツ公開講座を開催
し、
学外者含む多くの方々にご参加いただき
ました。
また
「桜募金」
では2千人近い寄付者
を集め、
目標額4000万円を達成し、
同窓会
としても母校に大いに貢献することができ
ました。
キャンパスの再整備や本家リベラル
アーツ教育の差別化など課題を抱えるICU
にとり、
同窓会は良きご意見番であり、

まず、
2016年1月に、
教員
および学生対象の新助成金制度を導入しました。
また、
6月にはICUのキャンパスにおいて、
社会科
学研究所とRethinking Peace Studies会議を共
催しました。
さらに、
Global Link夏季プログラム
の規模を拡大し、
7月には12名のICUの学生を迎
える予定です。
そして最後に、
当財団のコミュニ
ケーション・ディレクターに高田亜樹が就任しま
した。
教員・学生対象の助成金
JICUFは大学の指導部と密接に連携し、
教員・
学生対象の新助成金制度を導入しました。
新制度
の目的は、
ICUの中核をなす教員および学生の皆
様のニーズをより敏感に汲み取り、
対応すること
です。
今年から、
JICUFのWEBサイトを通して、
教
員・学生の皆様に直接助成金を申請していただけ
るようになりました。JICUF職員と、
財団理事が構
成する助成金特別委員会が提案書を審査し、
採否
を決定します。
ICUの3学期制に合わせて、
1年に3
つの申請期間を設けました。
4月初旬には、
第1回
の助成金受賞者が発表されました。教員に5件、
学 生に7件の助 成 金が 授 与され、
総 額は387万
3260円に達しました。
すでに秋学期の申請もいた
だいており、
引き続きICUの教員および学生の皆
様の創意あふれる研究・活動計画を積極的に支援
してまいります。
Global LinkとRethinking Peace Studies
JICUFは、
ICUに助成金や奨学金を提供するほ
か、
Global LinkおよびRethinking Peace Studies
の2つのプログラムを実施しています。
前者は学生
向け、後者は教員向けのプログラムです。
Global
Linkは、夏にニューヨーク市で行われる1カ月の
プログラムです。
今年で3年目を迎える本プログラ
ムの参加者は、
昨年の6人から12人に倍増しまし
た。
7月中、
ニューヨーク市をグローバルな都市た
らしめる社会・経済・文化・環境上の特色について
学びます。
財 団 職 員も学 生と共に、
Habitat for
Humanityの住宅建設プロジェクトや、
市のホー
ムレスの人々を支援するBowery Missionでのボ
ランティアなど、
社会奉仕活動に参加します。
Rethinking Peace Studies会 議は、
6月2日か
ら4日にかけて、
ICUのダイアログハウスで開催さ
れました。
今回の会議は、
3年間にわたって東京、
ニューヨーク、
スリランカで開かれたセミナーの集
大成です。
会議では、
オリジナルの論文が発表さ
れ、
数カ国から集まる20名ほどの研究者による基
調講演が行われました。
また、
会議で発表された
論文の一部を編集し、
出版する予定です。

Sakura Matsuri
Spectacular reunion day!
On March 26, 2016, ICU Alumni Association held its time-honored
reunion Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival) at the university
chapel. It was also the perfect time to view the “cherry blossoms
on MacLean Avenue” very close to full bloom. It turned out to be
a spectacular reunion day with numerous alumni, their families,
faculty and staff and students getting together for the event.
Sakura Matsuri is an ICU Alumni Association event
composed of a general meeting, DAY Award, graduation 50 th
anniversary celebration, and a social gathering and this year
marked the 11th edition.
162 people (168 in the previous year) attended the alumni
general assembly and the DAY Award held at the ICU Chapel.
The proceedings started with a prayer by Shoko Kitanaka
(CLA46), a graduate and the university minister .
“I am thankful for so many of the alumni from overseas as
well as various places in Japan to have come to take part in
this event this year too. I will be serving again as the president
of the meeting for this term. Let us work together to energize
ICU, our alma mater,” said Jun Kigoshi (CLA27), president of
the association. The meeting was attended by Chair of the board
of trustees Kakutaro Kitashiro and President Junko Hibiya .
11th DAY Award Ceremony

DAY Award Ceremony was held after the general assembly.
The DAY Award is given to those who have studied in ICU and have
contributed in increasing name recognition and raising the
attractiveness of the university as well as the association. The winners
this year were Tetsuo Chino (CLA1), Takashi Morieda (CLA22) and
Yoshimi Horiuchi (CLA51).
Chino got on stage and said, “I held my wedding ceremony in this
chapel 56 years ago,” and the hall erupted with loud cheers and applause.
11th DAY Award Recipients
Tetsuo Chino (CLA 1)
After graduating from ICU in 1957, he worked for a trading firm
before joining Honda Motor Co., Ltd. He has served as the
president of American Honda and representative director and
senior managing director at the head office. After retiring, he
also contributed to U.S.-Japan relations by serving as the
executive director of America-Japan Society, Inc. He also strived
to bolster the financial base of the university as Managing
Trustee for General Affairs and Financial Affairs of ICU.
Takashi Morieda (CLA 22)
After graduating from ICU in 1978, he covered
various parts of the world as a photojournalist. His
reports are from his own unique perspectives and
he has also written numerous books. Tabeteiru
noha ikimonoda, a book he wrote in 2014, not only
teaches the importance of food but also conveys
the importance of life and how to enjoy life.
Yoshimi Horiuchi (CLA 51)
During her high school years in the U.S., she
learned Thai language from a Thai friend. She
graduated from ICU in 2007. She started a
non-profit organization called ARC Story which
spreads the joy of reading in the rural areas of
Thailand and focuses on the management of
libraries and child education centers.
50th anniversary of CLA10 graduates
Every year, at Sakura Matsuri, the alumni celebrating the 50th
anniversary of their graduation are invited and felicitated. This
year, 41 out of the 202 graduates from CLA 10 attended the event
as the 50th anniversary graduates. Hayao Shiraishi, spoke on
behalf of his classmates, and subsequently Masako Orita presented
a donation of 3.82 million yen from CLA10 to President Hibiya.
At the social gathering held in the main dining hall, some
180 people renewed their friendship and also enjoyed making
new friends.
Message from
the Alumni Association President
In the past one year, the alumni association has seen many
marvelous developments. The Marunouchi Style branch,
which was started when a few young volunteers got together,
now holds regular events in the Tokyo metropolitan area
offering a networking forum between different fields. Last
November, we invited Prof. Yoichiro Murakami and held the first
liberal arts extension lecture of the association, and numerous
people including those from outside the university attended it.
Also, at the Sakura Fund, we were able to attract close to 2,000
donors and achieved the target of 40 million yen and the
association was able to make a significant contribution to our
alma mater. The association is an excellent counselor for
ICU, which faces many challenges including rebuilding the
campus and improving its pioneering liberal arts education,
and we would like to continue to be a supporter ICU can rely on.

The Japan ICU Foundation is pleased to share several
updates. First, in January 2016 we launched a Grants
for Faculty and Students initiative. Second, in early
June we co-hosted the Rethinking Peace Studies
conference on the ICU campus with ICU’ s Social
Science Research Institute. Third, our Global Link
summer program is expanding, with twelve ICU
students participating this July. Finally, we are pleased
to announce that Ms. Aki Takada has been appointed
as our new Director of Communications.
Grants for Faculty & Students
In close collaboration with ICU’s leadership, the JICUF
has launched a new Grants for Faculty and Students
initiative. The goal of the initiative is to be more
responsive to faculty and students, two of ICU’s core
constituent groups. As the name implies, ICU faculty
and students are now able to apply directly to the
JICUF for grant funding, through our website. The
JICUF staff and a special Grants Committee made up
of JICUF trustees is responsible for reviewing and
awarding grants. There are three application periods
each year, corresponding to ICU’s academic term
system. The JICUF announced its first grant recipients
in early April. Five grants were awarded to faculty and
seven to students, totaling ¥3,873,260 in funding. We
have received several inquiries for the Fall Term
grants, and look forward to continuing to support the
ingenuity of ICU faculty and students.
Global Link & Rethinking Peace Studies
In addition to providing grants and scholarships to
ICU, we also run two programs, Global Link and
Rethinking Peace Studies. Global Link is a student
program and Rethinking Peace Studies focuses on the
ICU faculty. Global Link is a one-month long summer
program held in New York City. This is the third year
we have run Global Link, and we are pleased that we
are doubling the number of ICU student participants
from six in 2015 to twelve in 2016. During the month of
July, we will be examining the social, economic,
cultural and environmental factors that make New
York a global city. Together with the students, we will
also engage in service activities, including a home
building project with Habitat for Humanity and
volunteering with the Bowery Mission, an organization
that supports the city's homeless population.
The Rethinking Peace Studies conference held
from June 2-4 in the Dialogue House at ICU. The
conference is the culminating event in a three-year
program that has included three seminars in Tokyo,
New York and Sri Lanka. The conference featured
original papers and keynote presentations from
approximately twenty academics from several
different countries. An edited volume will be published
featuring a selection of the papers presented at the
conference.
Introducing new staff, Ms. Aki Takada
We are pleased to announce that Ms. Aki Takada
(CLA35) joined the JICUF staff in May as our
Director of Communications. Ms. Takada is a
graduate of ICU’s College of Liberal Arts and also
received graduate degrees from ICU and from
Oxford University. She has previously worked for
the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United
Nations and the United Nations Development
Programme. She is leading our internal and
external communications efforts at the JICUF.

献学60周年記念事業の期間中に実施した58のアカデミック・プログラムの一部をご紹介します。

献学60周年記念事業に多大なるご協力を賜り、心より御礼申し上げます。
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kind cooperation during our 60th Anniversary Project.
本学は1953年、日本初の教養学部一学部の四年制大学として
献学され、2013年に60周年を迎えました。これを記念して、2011
年度から5年間、
「次の60年に向けて」をテーマに掲げた事業は、1
期生から在学生まで一同に集う有り難い機会となりました。
主な事業の柱「アカデミック・プログラム」は計58回実施され、世
界からの参加者による多様な対話が、メジャー制を導入した本学
のリベラルアーツを伸展させました。環境に対する問題意識を緒と
した学生と教職員の対話が、
「サステイナブル・キャンパス」を目指
す、大学の新たな取り組みにつながった例もあります。
一方、教育・研究を支えていただく記念募金は、同窓生の15％超
の皆様に参加いただき、総額約23億円を達成いたしました。
中でも、11のクラブで構成された「ICUフィールド人工芝化推進
協議会」と大学の協働により実現したフィールド人工芝化、若い卒
業生の参加も得て幅広く広がった桜並木保存のための募金は、同
窓会との協調を含め、アドヴァンスメント活動の新局面を拓きまし
た。さらに、ICU Peace Bell奨学金は、卒業生をはじめとする皆様
の支援を得て継続され、毎年10名以上のスカラーを誕生させるこ
とができました。
そして、ロータリークラブおよび会員の皆様と日本国際基督教大
学財団（JICUF）の支援を受けた「東ヶ崎潔記念ダイアログハウス」
と、JICUFの支援を受けた新学生寮3棟では、知の交流が促され
ました。
本学の理念にご賛同くださった皆様、在学生と保証人、同窓生と
同窓会、献学60周年記念事業推進委員、JICUF、ICU教会、教職員
の皆様のご厚情とご尽力に深く感謝いたします。
今後も国際平和のため、神と人とに奉仕する人材を育む本学の
教育と研究に、温かいご支援を賜りますよう、よろしくお願い申し

The ICU No.38 June 2016
Established in 1953 as Japan’s first liberal arts college offering
a four-year study program, ICU celebrated its 60th anniversary
in 2013. The five-year series of events to mark the anniversary,
spanning academic year 2011 through 2015, which were held
based on the theme, “Creating the Next 60 Years,” provided a
precious opportunity to bring together members from the
inaugural class right through to current students, and to look
ahead to the next 60 years.
The Academic Programs, which formed the main feature
of the 60th Anniversary Project, provided a forum for participants
from all over the world to discuss various topics on 58 different
occasions, and to extend ICU’s capability as a liberal arts
college with major system. For example, discussions between
environmentally aware students and faculty generated some
fresh initiatives within the university designed to create a more
sustainable campus.
In addition, more than 15% of alumni contributed to
anniversary funds, raising a very impressive 2.3 billion yen for
teaching and research.
To list a couple of fund-raising activities, 11 ICU student
sports clubs formed the Artificial Turf Promotion Committee,
which worked together with the university to fund a synthetic
sports surface. The ICU Sakura Fund to protect the cherry tree
boulevard attracted broad support and active participation
among young graduates, adding a new dimension to our
advancement activities and cooperation with the ICU Alumni
Association. In addition, thanks to consistently generous
donations from ICU alumni and friends, the ICU Peace Bell
Scholarship program was able to honor its commitment to fund
over 10 new scholars every year.
Meanwhile, the Kiyoshi Togasaki Memorial Dialogue
House, supported by the Rotary Clubs, their members, and
the Japan ICU Foundation, and the three new dormitories,
supported by the Japan ICU Foundation, are proving
wonderful venues for stimulating fruitful academic interaction.
To everyone who shares ICU’ s philosophy, our students
and their guardians, our alumni and the ICU Alumni
Association, the 60th Anniversary Project Promotion
Committee members, the Japan ICU Foundation, the ICU
Church, and the entire ICU staff, we would like to express our
gratitude for your overwhelming kindness and cooperation.
We hope we can continue to count on your warm support
of ICU’s teaching and research which are designed to educate
individuals to serve God and humankind, and help promote
international peace.

15％を超える15.1％に達しました。従来の草創期世
代による厚いご支援に加え、卒業生の若い層にも募金
活動への参加が拡がりました。

At the end of FY2013, only 7.5% of alumni had participated
in the fund-raising drive for the 60th Anniversary. However,
the Sakura Fund initiated in April 2014 pushed this rate
up to 15.1%, exceeding the target of 15%. In addition to
the strong support from older graduates, younger
alumni are beginning to give back to their alma mater.

The fund-raising drive for the artificial turf initiated in 2011 succeeded
in building a fund for the purpose, which was completed in April 2013. ICU
and Alumni worked together in planning and raising funds to fulfill the
project. It was a wonderful example of the strong rapport between the

The ICU Used Book Sale Donations initiated in April 2015, translated
fondness for books into donations. A designated dealer assesses the prices of
the used books and the proceeds are donated to the ICU Library. No fee is
required when more than five books are sent to the dealer. It’s a means to
donate to the university for anyone at any time.
In AY2015, we received 1,085,206 yen in donations (57,995 books).
The proceeds were used to fund acquisitions of 150 books.

藍の仕事着
Indigo-dyed Work Clothes

る仕事着の一種。ハギは継ぎ接ぎのハギ、トージンは「唐人」
Hagitōjin is a type of work kimono especially from
the Tsutsu village in Tsushima, Nagasaki prefecture
(present-day Tsushima city). Hagi means “patch” or

この展示ではハギトージンのほか、屋号を染め抜いた袢纏
や、絣の長着、刺子を施したドンザなど、江戸時代以降、人々

worn out parts of a work kimono, but the patches of
hagitōjin are not only functional, they are also well
designed, combining kasuri (ikat), stripe and plain
indigo-dyed cotton fabrics. From the mid-Meiji to early
Showa period, hagitōjin were used by both men and
women in Tsutsu as work clothes as well as for dress.
This exhibition will introduce the variety of work
kimono, ranging from hagitōjin, hanten coats with
shop names, kimono in kasuri, to donza with sashiko
stitching, hoping to show the beauty and function of
indigo-dyed kimono made after the Edo period.
