PART III: Writing
There are 15 points for this task:
-
5 points maximum for content and
5 points maximum for language, multiplied by 2.
Pupils are not expected to produce faultless English:
To achieve 15 points, a pupil should write a cohesive text which successfully communicates all
three parts of the message (how you heard about the accident, what is happening at school, 2
questions) and contains only few minor errors.
Points
CONTENT
5
All content elements covered with some detail.
Message clearly communicated to reader.
4
(Criteria from 5 and 3)
All content elements mentioned.
Message communicated successfully, on the whole.
3
OR
One content element omitted but others clearly communicated.
2
(Criteria from 3 and 1)
1
Little relevant content.
Message requires excessive effort by the reader.
0
Totally irrelevant.
Points (x2)
LANGUAGE
5
There are almost no errors in the text. Minor errors may occur when attempting
more complex language.
4
There are some minor, but almost no major errors.
3
2
1
0
There are several minor, and few major errors, but they do not impede
communication.
There are many minor and several major errors, which distract the reader and
may obscure communication at times.
Frequent errors which obscure communication; little evidence of language
control.
Totally incomprehensible.
Pupils are not penalised if they write more than 60 words.
If pupils use less than 45 words, they automatically lose 1 point out of 5 in the language section.
If they write less than 30 words, they automatically lose 2 points out of 5 in the language section.
Scripts whose content marks are 0 must not be marked for the other category (language).

Hi Mike, it’s Julie. Have you got an invitation for Matt’s birthday?
Sure I have. The party is next Saturday, isn’t it? Any idea what he would like?
You know he is a fan of the Allstars basketball team. We could get him a ticket for the final.
Sounds good to me. Do you know how much it is?
No, I don’t. But I’ll find out.

Look, I’ve found some nice beaches in Spain on the internet.
Oh no, Brian. Not the seaside again!
So what would you like? Let me think. Ah, a shopping tour!
No, I just want to see some interesting places. And a city tour would be perfect.
Well, in Spain we can do both, enjoy the sea and go sightseeing in cities!

I’m afraid my bag is way too small.
You’ve packed a lot of things for only four days.
For example?
Why are you taking your best dress?
Dad, I’m going to Paris with Cathy and Claire. We want to enjoy the night life there and we
have theatre tickets. So I need some nice clothes.
I see. I suppose you’ll have to take a different bag then.
Pat, when does the programme start again?
At eight. But actually I have to go to the shoe shop first.
But it’s already 5.30… Don’t forget that there’s the football match tonight and it might take
us a bit longer to get to the theatre hall.
Don’t worry, the shop is on our way and we won’t be late for the show.
What a terrible week. I can’t wait for Saturday!
Are you doing anything exciting?
My old friend Bob is coming to visit me. He’s just come back from his holiday in New York.
Lots to talk about, you see. We’ll have a night out and try the pubs in town. And on Sunday
we’ll watch a football match.
Sounds good. Well, I hope you boys have fun!
Task 2
Mike: Hi, Tom! Listen, I got my new mountain bike yesterday. How about a nice ride tomorrow afternoon?
Tom: Hm, the weather forecast says that there will be heavy rain. But you know what? There’s this new
indoor skate park. We could go there directly after school. It’s only 15 minutes by bus. You know,
it’s in the city centre, right next to the cinema. How about trying that?
Mike: Good idea! Er, I’ve never done that indoors. Do we need any special equipment there?
Tom: Yes, but don’t worry. You can borrow everything there. They have helmets, skateboards, knee
pads, wrist guards and so on. And you can use all these things for free.
Mike: OK then. How much is it to get in there? I’m a bit short of money this month. You know, my
mountain bike cost me an arm and a leg. I had to spend all my pocket money!
Tom: Actually, there’s a special offer for the next seven days. Usually it’s £16 for everybody, but now it’s

£14 for one person and the second person doesn’t have to pay. So it’s £7 for each of us. And by
the way, there’s a skating show every Tuesday! I can ask for tickets if you want.
Mike: Deal. Call and see if you can get tickets for tomorrow. So we’ll go there right after school, okay?
Tom: Sure. I only have to be back home at six o’clock for my piano lesson.
Mike: No problem. See you!
Task 3
John: Hi Amy. What’s up?
Amy: Hi John, I’ve lost my programme and I can’t remember when we are going to meet tomorrow to go
to Stonehenge.
John: Well,… The trip is going to start at 8 o’clock, so you have to be at the bus stop at half past seven.
Amy: OK. Do we have to take anything special?
John: Yes! Here it says: It’s not necessary to take something to write but you need an umbrella and
walking shoes.
Amy: Do we have to take something to eat and drink?
John: Mrs Sheridan says it’s up to you. There is a café or a snack bar as far as I can remember...
And yes – don’t forget to take some money with you.
Amy: How much?
John: £12.50.
Amy: I think we are also going to King Arthur’s Castle. Does it cost extra?
John: Hm… No, it doesn’t. That’s where we’re going on Friday.
Amy: Oh, I thought we’re having a day at the beach on Friday.
John: No, that’s on Saturday.
Amy: OK, thanks for the info. See you tomorrow then…
John: Hang on, there’s something else. Here it says you must write down the teacher’s mobile number so
you can phone her if you get lost. It’s: 07485439765.
Amy: Wait, I’ll repeat it: 07485439765. Right?
John: Perfect. See you tomorrow then. Bye.
Amy: Bye.
