Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (State Museums in Berlin) Kunstbibliothek (Art Library) / Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Asian Art Museum) Cordula Treimer* My name is Cordula Treimer, I am working for the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library) at the Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Asian Art Museum) of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (State Museums in Berlin). I graduated from Heidelberg University with a master in East Asian art history. The topic of my thesis was the “Story of the Crane“ from the Kyôto National Museum. After that I also graduated from the Berlin School of Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität (Humboldt University). Before my current position as a librarian, I have worked as an intern at the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture and the Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst (Museum of East Asian Art) of the State Museums in Berlin, and as an assistant professor at the Institute of East Asian Art History, Heidelberg University. Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (State Museums in Berlin) The State Museums in Berlin is one of the 5 cultural institutions within the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. You probably already know the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library). The State Museums in Berlin are comprised of 15 museums and 4 scientific research institutes. Together they form Germany‘s largest universal museum. Kunstbibliothek (Art Library) The Art Library, I am working for, is one of these 15 museums and one of Germany's leading art libraries. It is a combination of a research library and a museum. Although it seems a little unusual, the Museum für Fotografie (Museum of Photography) is also part of the Art Library. Founded in 1867, the Art Library now has 64 full-time positions. Apart from the main library specializing on Western art, there is also one specializing in archeology. The libraries of the museums in Dahlem will form the library for non-European art and culture. This includes the library of the Asian Art Museum I am working at. The main building at the Kulturforum (cultural forum) near Potsdamer Platz houses the special library for Western art. At the end of 2014 it housed 545782 books, had made 10327 new acquisitions that year and held 1438 current periodicals. The acquisition budget was 496948 EUR (about 6560000 JPN). 28572 users lend 94298 volumes in 2014. The archaeological library and the future library for nonEuropean art and culture are situated close the famous Museumsinsel Berlin (Museum Island Berlin. HumboldtHumboldt-Forum Humboldt-Forum is the name for the cultural institutions which will be housed in the newly reconstructed castle in the center of Berlin. The awarding authority of the construction is the Berlin Palace – Humboldt-forum. Users are the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, the Humboldt University, and the Federal * Cordula Treimer (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, State Museums in Berlin, State Museums in Berlin, Art Library / Asian Art Museum, Librarian) State of Berlin. that system, and reduce duplicate holdings. Of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation the Museum of Asian Art, the Ethnological Museum and the Art Library will move into the Humboldt-forum. In 2006 the Asian Art Museum was formed by merging the museum of East Asian Art and the Museum of Indian Art, and their libraries with them. The holdings are included in the OPAC of the Art library (opac.smb.spk-berlin.de, without kanji), the database of the museum libraries within the GBV (Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund) the common library network of northern German states (http://gso.gbv.de/DB=2.914/, with kanji), the general GBV OPAC (http://gso.gbv.de/, with kanji) and others. The library of the Museum of Asian Art owns about 39000 volumes. It is mainly used by the curators, the staff of the museum, and students of East Asian art history. It is not open to the general public and not a lending library. The collection focuses on Asian art, archeology and crafts. The library of the Ethnological Museum is about 4 times as big as the Asian art library. It is a public, non-lending library with 577 external users in 2014. The focus of its collection is non-European anthropology, ethnomusicology and old travel accounts. In 2019 the libraries of the Ethnological Museum and the Asian Art Museum are due to be merged to form the special library of non-European art and culture, covering the arts and culture of Africa, Asia, America and Oceania. Since 2012 both libraries have strengthened their collection of books on contemporary nonEuropean art. Altogether there will be about 180 000 volumes in the open stacks of the new library, which is planned to be opened on the second floor of the Humboldt-forum in November 2019. Future plans plans of the Art Library in general Long term projects of the Art Library in general are to complete the implementation of a central library system at the State Museums (since 2009), finish retro cataloging and digitization for research purposes. The results of digitization and public access projects can be found, for example, at europeana (http://www.europeana.eu/portal/) and the homepage of the State Museums (SMBdigtal, online collection database http://smb-digital.de/eMuseumPlus). One project is to digitized the auction catalogs published in Germany, Austria and Switzerland between 1901 and 1945 (http://www.arthistoricum.net/en/subjects/t hematic-portals/german-sales/). There are also digitization projects for archival material (EMA - Erich Mendelssohn Archive, Correspondence of Erich and Luis Mendelsohn 1910-1953, (http://ema.smb.museum/en/home) and for data aggregation and refinement (http://artlibraries.worldcat.org/). JAL JAL Project Our projects before moving to the new premises are finishing retro cataloging of material in Asian languages, extend relevant parts of RVK (Regensburger Verbundklassifikation, a call number system widely used in scientific libraries in Germany), change the call numbers to Thanks to the JAL Project I was able to get to know great research material at amazing research institutions and art museum libraries as well as people working enthusiastically at very interesting projects. What I learned I will use myself and show to researchers in Germany.
