Design from Bavaria
bayern design at EXPO Milan 2015
Nuremberg/Milan. – At EXPO Milan 2015, bayern design will present Smart
Innovation – Design from Bavaria, a showcase of unique solutions, ideas for
sustainable design, and future-oriented approaches to design, all originating in
Bavaria. A film about Neue Sammlung – The International Design Museum and a
panel discussion will complement the exhibition. bayern design will host these
events during Bavarian Culture Week (October 5 through 11), organized by the
Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology
and taking place in the outdoor area of the German pavilion. The exhibition will be
inaugurated by Ilse Aigner, Bavarian State Minister for Economic Affairs and Media,
Energy and Technology and Deputy Prime Minister, on October 5. According to
Aigner, “More than ever, a company’s success depends on its providing innovative
products and services. Design is a driver of innovation and, thus, a decisive factor
in the process of value creation. EXPO Milan 2015 offers a unique opportunity to
show an international audience that design made in Bavaria can help save
resources and increase sustainability.”
Smart Innovation – Design from Bavaria
Design plays a key role in Bavaria: It is a linking element among interdisciplinary
topics, it has the power of innovation, and to a significant extent it drives the
growth of the Bavarian creative sector. Design from Bavaria provides answers to
questions relating to ecology and society and, thus, contributes to sustainably
improving the quality of life.
Smart Innovation – Design from Bavaria will focus on the key tasks of design and
will demonstrate ways for designers to assume responsibility. One good example is
the design study on the Swirl-On-The-Go-Laundry-System developed by
designaffairs, a non-electrically powered washing machine that could improve
living conditions in developing countries to a significant extent. Other examples
include studies titled Keysteps – Basic Information for Refugees and Transforming
Space carried out at Munich Technical University and Rosenheim University,
respectively. Both studies deliver design solutions to these two key questions facing
modern society: What is the best way to provide refugees with information? How
can buildings that already exist be adapted to meet the challenges of demographic
change?

Design made in Bavaria stands for innovation. Designers are tasked with merging
new technologies originating in industries including IT, robotics and others, and in
the media to create new applications. The installation Robochop devised by
designers Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram shows how individual manufacturing
orders can be transmitted directly to industrial robots. Icaros, a device developed by
Hyve, combines exercise with a unique virtual-reality flight experience. The Dew
Drops lamps designed by Ingo Maurer are a mix of minimalist design and
innovative illuminants made of transparent plastic foil fitted with myriad LEDs.
Partners and platforms from Bavaria who will participate in Smart Innovation –
Design from Bavaria include AMD Akademie Mode & Design, Büttenpapierfabrik
Gmund, Designgruppe Koop, Dynamify, Electrolyte, Hochschule Hof, Markus
Bischof Produktdesign, MVG Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft, NavVis and TUM
Create, TUM Visio.M et al. In addition, the Bavarian State Prize for Young
Designers will be presented on the occasion of the design exhibition. Key design
institutions and design projects will be marked on a map of all Bavarian
government districts. Hence, Smart Innovation – Design from Bavaria will offer
varied insight into the Bavarian design landscape.
Panel discussion
To emphasize the Bavarian Culture Week’s focus on design, on Sunday, October
11 at 5:00 p.m. a panel discussion on Smart Innovation – Design from Bavaria will
be hosted at the German pavilion. In addition to complementing the design
exhibition, the event will allow participants a glimpse into the future and will deal
with the role of design when it comes to assuming society’s pressing tasks. In what
way do designers contribute to answering society’s imperative questions? What
examples exist? What is smart innovation? Why is the role of design so essential in
the process of innovation? Do people still have visions of the future? How will we
shape the future?
Potential answers to these and other questions will be discussed by the members
of the panel:
• Dr. Angelika Nollert, Director of Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design
Museum, Munich
Page 3
• Andreas Koop, founder of designgruppe koop and organizer of the
Stadt.Land.Schluss conference, Rückholz/Allgäu
• Prof. Kilian Stauss, founder of stauss processform, Munich
The discussion will be moderated and illustrated on site by Italian designer Alessio
Leonardi, a professor of visual communication at HAWK Hochschule für
angewandte Wissenschaft und Kunst Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen.
