Blicke / Glances It’s often taken for granted particularly when viewing an art piece or a representation of some sort that its’ being a representation makes it something that can be understood correctly or incorrectly; where there is representation, there is room for interpretational mistake and therefrom comes the need for direction on how and what to see. On this particular day, the atmosphere at KW was transformed within seconds from a kind of stillness that normally accompanies the first floor to a frenzy of curiosity, playfulness and imagination. With these children’s presence, the instillation came to life in a way that transcended representation. A movie set became a house. It was as if for 15 minutes, as their voices carried throughout the room and their eyes and fingers brushed against every glass and wooden surface, the need for correct interpretation there was abandoned for experience. After they left, the room became still again. The instillation returned to being a representation again, however, the experience somehow left me content yet somewhat unsettled. I couldn’t help but wonder just what they had seen in their brief time at KW – in their brief time in Berlin – in their brief time - and more so what they would see tomorrow. Anyway, I looked forward to seeing them again soon.
