2015 is an exciting year for Austria to showcase its creative sector to an international and vibrant community
in Milan. With the presence of a successful EXPO exhibition that will attract more than 20 million people to
Italy, all eyes are on Milan as they expect to be introduced
to the unique identity of each participating country. In
our case, this gives us the opportunity to present an extensive cross-section of Austria’s creative industries and
its impressive achievements by launching the exhibition
Austrian Design Explosion.
As Austria’s creative industries are at the heart of economic revitalisation and a key sector for jobs, growth
and innovation, they contribute to a positive image for
Austria as a prime business location, while serving as a
global Ambassador for our open-minded society. Furthermore, cultivating creativity and state-of-the-art design
are important competitive factors, given their ability to
leverage export successes and positive impact on the
business location. The aim, therefore, is to turn Austria’s
creative economy into one of the most innovative and
forward-looking players in the world.
In order to contribute to this success story, the Austrian
export promotion campaign “go-international” supports
creative and inventive companies with an extensive range
of events and facilitates their participation at various
international exhibitions. Reinhold Mitterlehner
Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister of Science, Research and Economy
Austria’s creative industries have gone from being a dynamic niche phenomenon to a significant and high-growth
factor for Austria as a business location. The creative
industries’ diverse sector enjoys an extremely positive
development and cuts an impressive figure with high
start-up and employment levels.
Creativity, expertise and innovation are the pillars of Austrian success in a globalised world. Creative professionals
are the source of unique and innovative ideas. At any rate,
the international success stories that our Austrian companies have to tell are certainly impressive.
The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber recognised this
development at an early stage. Indeed, there has been
a specific focus on creative industries at ADVANTAGE
AUSTRIA since 2005. Being part of this focus, with this
exhibition, the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber
would like to highlight the role that Austrian creative
industries play as a decisive factor in export activities
and also emphasise that design is an indispensable driver
behind the success that the Austrian business community
enjoys in the international arena.
Christoph Leitl
President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber
As part of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber,
ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA is the face and the voice of
Austria’s export business as well as Austria itself abroad.
As THE internationalisation agency of the Austrian economy, it has a global network of over 110 offices in more
than 70 countries. Austria’s export business is also supported by a comprehensive programme of services.
The exhibition at the Triennale museum in Milan is dedicated to the Austrian design and technology landscape, along
with other related sectors such as architecture, fashion,
music, film and art. The work on show illustrates how the
ingenuity of Austrian companies, creative entrepreneurs
and academics has helped to make the world a more sustainable, beautiful and better place – from the start of the
industrial revolution to today’s digital age. We are delighted to welcome around 120 exhibitors through our doors.
It’s an impressive Austrian success story.
Using selected highlights, the exhibition documents
the innovative strength of Austrian entrepreneurs and
creative professionals, as well as its significance for an
open-minded, high-growth and internationally integrated
Austria.

Austrian Design Explosion – Introduction
It was more than thirteen years ago that I first visited Milan during the
Salone Internazionale del Mobile furniture fair. I was flabbergasted.
The city was completely flooded with design. Italy, Denmark, Japan and
many more countries would invest heavily to show off the best-of-thebest of their respective design-led industries. But where was Austria?
Well, nowhere to be seen!
As the then recently-appointed Director of the Austrian Design Foundation, immediately afterwards I consulted with the President of the
Board, Stefan Pierer, CEO of KTM, and insisted that Austrian design
has to be present in Milan and take centre-stage at the most important
institution, the Triennale Museum.
I have to admit, it took us some time to get from the initial idea to actual
implementation. It was not an easy task. Funders would denounce the
effort as being too costly, designers would state that Austrian design
doesn’t exist, design institutions would complain that Austria has no
industry to design for, and design historians would assert that Austria
had an amazing past with the “Wiener Werkstätte”, but has no present
and no future.
The Austrian Design Explosion exhibition should prove otherwise.
Karim Rashid once commented: “Austria has a unique position on the
world map. Creatively and physically, it is right in the middle, between
the poetry of Italian design, the engineering of German design and
the upcoming new creativity in Eastern Europe.” To further sharpen
this charming analysis, allow me to present my own concept, which is
outlined in the exhibition and follows three interlinking hypotheses
about Austrian design:
1. An obsession with finding technical solutions to complex
everyday problems;
2. A passion for exploring the application-related limits of
extraordinary materials;
3. The pursuit of a strict minimalistic approach in aesthetic practice
coupled with emotion or tongue-in-cheek humour.
With regard to the first point, Austria’s many hidden champions are
niche players who overcome difficult technical tasks by demonstrating surprising ingenuity, relentless effort and a strong sense of discipline. A dual education system based on theory and practical training,
amazing technical schools called HTLs (Higher Technical Institutes)
and renowned engineering universities account for the numerous
cases of design-led Austrian companies dominating up to 90 per
cent of the world market. Technical solutions offered by companies
such as Zumtobel Lighting, Magna Steyr (a vehicle production firm)
and Fronius (which produces welding machines) are leaders in their
respective fields.
All of these companies share a passion to stretch the limits of certain
materials. This is true particularly in fields such as steel – take voest
alpine, for example – or glass with long-established family firms such as
Swarovski, Riedel and Lobmeyr. But this also applies to the wood segment, where Thonet revolutionised the furniture industry more than
150 years ago and, today, KLH and other companies are leading the way
in the sector with cross-laminated timber products for eye-opening
architectural ventures. I could mention many more fields of material
innovation, such as plastics with ALPLA, Engel and Greiner (to name
just three world leaders), or textile applications ranging from luxury
to technical with Wolford, Lenzing and Getzner.
It does not matter whether we look at furniture made by Wittmann,
a mobile phone made by emporia or automotive parts made by HENN.
Austrian design can usually be identified by its minimalistic aesthetics,
a reduced formal approach which is so engineered and precise that
it is as if Adolf Loos had pointed the finger and reminded designers
of his lecture “Ornament and Crime”. Or is it the frugal context of
the ‘poor’ Alpine landscape that puts the brakes on stylistic exuberance? In any case, the formal elegance is usually counterbalanced
by an effortless emotional kick, a sense of humour or eye-twinkling
self-depreciation.
The exhibition reflects on more than 150 years of Austrian design history with a strong emphasis on today’s creative output of more than
120 companies and designers. Austrian Design Explosion is building
bridges between old masters, such as Carl Suchy, Josef Hoffmann and
Ernst Dryden, and the pioneers of today such as EOOS, mischer’traxler
and formquadrat. The exhibition respects the dual nature of industrial production and handcrafted limited editions, treating experimental projects with the same appreciation as mass-produced products.
Here, industrial design comes eye-to-eye with product design, fashion and digital design. Even sound art, experimental film and architecture have a place in the exhibition. This diversity and the strong
cultural backdrop of Austrian society form an important cornerstone of
Vienna’s design scene and beyond, not just recently, but since the early
stage of the industrial revolution.
In that sense, the exhibition is a premiere, demonstrating Austrian
design excellence in the broadest sense of the phrase. The exhibition’s
design, inspired by a 3D explosive drawing from the automotive industry, allows people to experience Austrian design with all their senses.
It took thirteen years to design and implement Austrian Design
E xplosion. This would not have been possible without the inspiring
support of Walter Koren and Karl Hartleb, the amazing collaboration
with Reanne Leuning, Helmut Döller, Ruth Sackl and Salomea Krobath
and the creative energy of Dieter Spath, Reinhard Steger, Michael
Ellensohn and Deborah van Mourik.
Thirteen years is enough. Let’s pull the trigger. 3, 2, 1 – here we go!
Enjoy the Austrian Design Explosion!

NEW VIENNA PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY AUGARTEN
It took around 18 months for Augarten to develop
a technological masterpiece in collaboration with
mo°sound, a creative special interests vendor from
Vienna. The big brother of the smaller “mo°speaker”
– a seamless sphere of porcelain measuring 23 cm in diameter and with a volume of five litres – was made using the complicated Sprengform method and houses a
full-range loudspeaker. This globally unique achievement is an acoustic and an aesthetic object of desire
that looks and sounds just perfect.
Founded in 1718, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten is
one of the oldest porcelain manufactories in Europe. Even today,
their porcelain is hand-made and hand-painted just as it was back
then, so every single customer can rest assured that they are
buying a unique item – a one-of-a-kind. The manufactory satisfies
contemporary tastes using modern shapes and reduced d
 écor.
Designers are actively involved in the development process.
Augarten runs its production operations in an environmentally
friendly and sustainable manner at the heart of Vienna, creating
lasting values and, at the same time, maintaining a tradition that
dates back almost 300 years. Porcelain from the Vienna manufactory is a piece of Austrian cultural heritage.

BEAUTIFICATION
MAYA PINDEUS & JOHANNA PICHLBAUER × ANIMATE
We have barely even noticed that, in our
everyday lives, processes have been taken over
and rituals replaced by machines. But what
happens when a deeply rooted human ritual
is taken over by a machine? In a beautification
ritual, ANIMATE’s little robots paint across
the human face, analyse and sparkle and, in so
doing, follow their own ideals. Any users who
put themselves in the cosmetic care of their
machines find out that machines can make mistakes too and that they have their own characters. And some people might even wonder:
Who even decides what is beautiful?
Every object carries a trace of life within itself. Sometimes, it’s
the way an object moves. Other times it’s the story of how an
object was created. And then, there are objects that only come
to life during interaction with humans. It is those aspects that
make design both fascinating and challenging for ANIMATE.
The Vienna-based design duo experiments at the interface between digital fabrication techniques and crafts, between man
and machine. Together, Johanna Pichlbauer and Maya Pindeus
aim to fill their creations with life.

Bohmann in 1968 in Krieglach (Styria) and Harald Gruendl in
1967 in Vienna. They studied Industrial Design together at the
University of Applied Arts Vienna and then founded EOOS in
1995. The studio name is inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses,
the name of one of the four chariot horses of the sun god Helios.
EOOS developed “Poetical Analysis” as a research tool that designers use to investigate rituals, myths and intuitive imagery
and that they take as the starting point for their designs.

Designed in a quintessential Viennese secessionist style, this modernist carpet was woven
at the Ebergassing workshop (near Vienna)
of the famous Philipp Haas & Soehne company, which was already active in carpet weaving since the second half of the nineteenth
century. The design features a centralised

very essence of the Wiener Werkstaette with
its aim at modernising ancient traditions.
Founded by the Viennese industrialist Philipp Haas in 1810,
the company for carpets and upholstering fabric soon gained
international reputation due to their oriental waving pattern
and cooperation with renowned artists. The company had factories in several countries and shops in Milan, Prague, Bukarest
and Berlin. Philipp Haas & Soehne exhibited at the world expo
in 1873 and was appointed purveyor to the court during the
Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The carpet presented here was
produced in 1910 in the context of the production community

DESIGN FOR THE
REAL WORLD:
HUMAN ECOLOGY AND
SOCIAL CHANGE
VICTOR PAPANEK
Even though 44 years have passed since
its first publishing, the topics dealt with
in this book are more relevant than
ever: Papanek examines how unsafe and
wasteful design can and should be replaced with responsible and sustainable
methods. “Design for the Real World” is,
until today, the most read design book
and has been translated into 23 different languages.
Even after his death, Viennese-born Victor Papanek (1923–
1998) is still internationally regarded as a leading advocate for
the importance of socially and ecologically responsible product
design. Having studied Design at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT), Papanek subsequently headed several Design
departments at US Universities and taught around the globe.
His books against reckless design address contemporary problems and are still widely read.

With his clear, uncompromising concept of form, architect Adolf Loos
was way ahead of his time. This tumbler service has the characteristic diamond-cut at the base. Each line is cut
by hand and carefully matt-polished.
The series, a Lobmeyr classic since 1931,
paved the way for modern glass design.
The well-documented design process
started with a sketch showing five tumblers. Those have been executed recently
and converted into the final series.
In 1823, master glazier Josef Lobmeyr opened his first little
glass business in the heart of Vienna. Since then, six generations have unveiled the miracle of glass. Together with designers
like Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos, Ted Muehling, Marco Dessí,
POLKA, Mark Braun, Sebastian Menschhorn and Formafantasma, classic pieces of handmade crystal and chandeliers emerged,
which are appreciated by connoisseurs all over the world.

century old rituals, rites of passage, and religious

with the culture and life in an Alpine mountain

Using very simple techniques consisting of black
cloth as background drop and only natural lights,
she achieves an artistic simplicity and minimalism
loaded with an emotion that reminds of old masters such as Caravaggio. In this show, the series
“Bridal Crowns” is exhibited. The juxtaposition
between the archaic, modest depiction of a bridal crown on the one hand and the more colourful,
sumptuous version on the other hand illustrates
the Austrian duality of the Alpine frugality and

The material used for The Bolognese was
salvaged from a villa in Bologna constructed
around 1850. Valentinitsch‘ approach, which
consisted of working with the special structures of a two-dimensional surface, produced a
remarkable result. The polyhedrons that were
produced are a reminiscent of the way in which
geometry and perspective were handled with
the dazzling camouflage of the First World War.
They entice the observer and invite him to rearrange the objects. The Bolognese, which was
intended to be used as either a side table or a
stool, can be rotated and is striking not only as
a single piece but also in an ensemble.
Rediscover, translate, reshape. Based on the premise that historical building materials are of special value, spolia. makes a
point of misappropriating valuable materials and setting them
in a contemporary context. In this way, spolia. harks back to an

great too. Its rounded chassis shape, smooth surface
material and compact design turn the iMow into

the iMow is also a lifestyle object which combines
the possibilities opened up by intelligent technologies with our desire for a modern way of living.

In 2005, WALKING CHAIR design studio founded its own product platform
and, in 2006, the WALKING CHAIR
GALLERY which highlights new design
trends was opened. In 2010, their first
main publication YOU DO DESIGN YOU
— WE DO DESIGN YOU was published by
Metro Verlag in Vienna and sheds light
on the world of the “walking chair” over
512 pages. When asked “What do you actually do”, the designers both answer in
unison: WE MAKE THINGS AND SONGS.
A chair that walks, a walking chair ...
WALKING CHAIR design studio was founded by Karl Emilio
Pircher and Fidel Peugeot in Vienna in 2003. Since then, the
designers have showcased their work and inventions in the international arena and have followed their work philosophy which
states that content forms the basis of good design. DESIGN

A luminaire that is a combination
of a historical cobblestone and a
fishing rod would already be interesting enough. Yet Wanda offers much more, as it has a LEDilluminant, which makes it light
for 18 hours without recharging.
Absolutely recommended to
bookworms.
VITEO has been managed by co-founder Wolfgang Pichler since
2002. The company manufactures products for people who feel
most at home in the outdoors. Nature is respected because it
is the source of VITEO’s inspiration. Thanks to this philosophy,
VITEO creates a huge variety of outdoor furniture. The company is only satisfied when it achieves the very best. For VITEO,
top quality is an absolute must. The basis for each collection is
natural and high-quality materials such as teak, stainless steel
or the solid surface Corian®. VITEO furniture is designed and
produced in Austria with the highest quality standards.

The result of the unique collaboration of
Coop Himmelb(l)au and Backhausen is the
textile collection called “Circles”. With a
choice of colours ranging from white to silver to black, a glittery effect is achieved with
the use of a fine metallic yarn. This innovative design lends a captivating 3D Effect,
referencing the curved outer surfaces on
buildings designed by Coop Himmel(b)lau.
Founded in 1968, Coop Himmelb(l)au is a leading vanguard architecture office that gained international acclaim with buildings like the ECB Building in Frankfurt, Germany, the Musée de
Confluence in Lyon, France and the Dalian International Conference Center in China.
Backhausen was founded in 1849 and designs and manufactures
high-quality, design-oriented upholstery and decorative fabrics.
In the 19th century, Backhausen was already known for its
innovation and quality. Its successful cooperation with contemporary artists around 1900 is continued even today with wellknown Austrian artists and architects.

Fe/Zn/Au Collection
Ferrum/Zincum/Aurum, armchairs
In the year 2015, we are back at
the start, visually overwhelmed
and permanently overstimulated,
wide eyed, hungry for some plan,
pattern, wisdom and beauty.
The spring coils, bare of all frills,
simple and honest, cut into the
flesh of our present tense, and
they choose to do it in style: to glitter, peacock and parade in a fine
razzle dazzle.
Kabiljo Inc. designs and produces objects for those with peculiarities, bad habits and obsessions. The works of Kabiljo Inc.
seek innovation on the level of human behaviour. As a result,
materials are burnt, bleached, crimped, spilt, bent and turned
into gold until they fit into place. Simple things are created for
our complex times; nice, irony-free and celebratory.
