The little rodent is something very special – he can sniff smuggled goods better than a tracker dog. When Raffi is kidnapped by a ruthless criminal, Sammy goes on an adventure through the city of Hamburg to rescue his friend. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Rettet Raffi is based on the book with the same name, written by Arend Agthe and Bettina Kupfer. The film won the audience award at Kinderfilmfest Munich 2015 and received a number of other nominations. TEACHERS’ GUIDE TO ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES BEFORE THE FILM Activity 1 Encourage the children to take a guess! The aim of this activity is to familiarise the children with the setting of the film. No specific solution is provided. Activity 2 This activity aims to introduce Germany, its cities and geography, as well as some aspects of its culture. a) Children should be able to locate Hamburg on the map based on the images given in Activity 1. It is the only city in the north, as well as the city located closest to the sea. Activity 3 a) After researching Hamburg or other aspects relating to Germany, this activity points out similarities between Germany and Scotland b) This activity is aimed to bring the attention back to the film and story, so the children are ready to watch Rettet Raffi. Potential points of discussion within your class could be the following: - Do you think living in a big city is more dangerous than in the countryside? Is it more exciting to live in a big city? What about the dangers of water and/or the harbour? Etc… ACTIVITIES AFTER THE FILM The activities following the film are rather self-explanatory. The first three activities deepen the understanding of the film and its storyline. Activity 4 to 6 are more vocabulary and grammar-based. Activity 2 a) It’s advisable to go over the sentences in 2 a) to make sure that the pupils understand what they’re being asked, as no English version is provided. Solutions to the tasks are provided on the attached sheet. ACTIVITIES FOR THE CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES BEFORE THE FILM Activity 1 - Getting to know the setting a) Have a look at the pictures below – can you describe them? Under each picture, write down some words that best describe what you can see! b) Based on the pictures above (they are taken from the film), where do you think the film is set? Take a guess! Activity 2 As you may have already guessed “Rettet Raffi” is set in a harbour town in Germany: HAMBURG Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and the most important harbour. It is located in the North of Germany and due to its large amount of bridges also known as “ the Venice of the North”. a) Have a look at the map of Germany. Can you guess where Hamburg is located? What about the other German cities? (You can do some research to solve this task!) Fill in the blanks with the correct city names! Hamburg - Berlin - Hannover - Köln - München - Frankfurt b) These are pictures of the cities from previous exercise. Can you match them? Write the name next to the picture! Activity 3 a) As you already know by now Hamburg is the most important harbour in Germany. Can you name an important harbour in Scotland? Talk about some ideas for making a film about her/his story. ACTIVITIES AFTER THE FILM Activity 1 - Characters in the film a) Match the character with the correct picture. Raffi is his best friend. 8. ‘Die Frau’ - She goes out with Rocky until she realises that he is a bad person.
