<2> University-Recommended Scholarships: Scholarships from Ritsumeikan University as
well as Private and Public Foundations
1.
Basic Rules regarding International Student Scholarships
● The scholarships managed by the International Center are for international students only.
*Most scholarships require that applicants hold a "Student" status of residence.
● Scholarship applications are accepted twice a year, during the Fall and Spring Scholarship Applications for
Privately Financed International Students, for scholarships that require the recommendation of the university.
Students who apply are screened for eligibility, and if determined eligible, are selected for scholarship
recommendation.
*It is not possible to apply individually to scholarships that require the university’s recommendation.
*Students who did not apply via the Scholarship Application for Privately-Financed International Students will
not be considered.
*Depending on the scholarship foundation’s application requirements, there are cases where the university will
hold separate open application periods. In those cases, for the most part, one of the requirements is that applicants
must have applied for scholarship via the Scholarship Application for Privately-Financed International Students
(please check the application requirements of each such open scholarship application in order to confirm the
whether or not this is the case).
● There are other scholarships available that are not handled by the International Center. Please visit your college
or graduate school’s administrative office, the Office of Graduate Studies, the Student Office, etc… for
information on other scholarship opportunities (for the Saionji Scholarship, please consult with your college’s
administrative office).
● In order for the university to recommend many international students for scholarship, students who are
recommended and consequentially selected for scholarship award may only receive one scholarship at a time.
*Students who are recommended and consequentially selected for scholarship will not be recommended by the
university for any additional scholarship during the academic year of their scholarship award.
*Students who are currently being recommended for scholarship will not be recommended for any other
scholarship until the selection results of the first scholarship are made available.
● When evaluating and recommending students for university recommended scholarships, only students who will
be enrolled for the duration of the scholarship’s selection period, recommendation period, and award period will
be chosen.
2.
Applicable Scholarships and their Duration
● As a rule, scholarships with application and selection periods falling within the 2016 academic year, which have
scholarship payment periods occurring between April 2016 and March 2017.
● The scholarships found in the International Student Handbook 2016 will form the majority of the applicable
scholarships.

- Comparative Ranking: Each students’ Academic Year 2015 GPA (based on grades at the time of the
release of 2015 fall semester grades) will be normalized and calculated in a way that is fair when compared
with other students of the same college and grade level. The comprehensive evaluation will take place after
student ranking is calculated.
*Calculation parameters include all students of the same grade level of your school of enrollment
(including Japanese students).
*Academic Year 2015 GPA is calculated based on the following equation.
(5×number of A+ credits)+(4×number of A credits)(3×number of B credits)+(2×number of C credits)
(Number of total registered credits (including Fs) - number of P credits)
<Caution>
Credits for courses not necessary for graduation and courses graded as N will not be included in the GPA
calculation.
*Scores will be evaluated comparatively by grade level and school of enrollment, based on Academic Year
2015 GPA. Therefore, a seemingly high GPA does not guarantee that you are ranked highly overall.
8
3) Special Circumstances

-Credit standards: The number of credits acquired by the end of the semester just before your study abroad

are receiving a separate private scholarship, please make sure to read the rules very carefully before trying to
apply for another scholarship at the same time.
●If you receive 2 or more scholarships at once but their rules state that you may not hold multiple scholarships,
you may be asked to return scholarship payments or have your scholarships cancelled.
●If you apply separately to a private scholarship and are selected for a scholarship award, please submit a copy
of your certificate of scholarship award to the International Center.

Application Documents Q&A
Q. I am a new first-year student who entered under the "Ippan Nyushi," so I do not have EJU scores. What
will my evaluation be based on?
A. All first-year students are required to submit EJU scores for their evaluation, so we will ask you to arrange
separately to take the test.
Q. I am currently applying independently to scholarships. Am I still eligible to apply?
A: Yes. However, you will not be recommended to any scholarships available through the 2016 Spring
Scholarship Application for Privately Financed International Students for the duration of the time you are being
recommended to the independent scholarships.
Q: Is a visa status of “College Student” required in order to apply?
A: While the visa status of “College Student” is required if you intend to apply for tuition reduction, there are
some scholarships that do not take your visa status into consideration. However, since the majority of
scholarships require “College Student” visa status, changing your visa status will increase your chances of
receiving a scholarship.
Q: My visa status will be expiring soon. What should I do?
A: You must submit a copy of your Residence Card before your status expires. If you are currently in the process
of updating or renewing your status, please submit documentation verifying this or a copy of your passport.
Q: Where can I receive application documents?
A: Application documents are not available at the International Center. Please go to the International Center
homepage (http://en.ritsumei.ac.jp/current-students/scholarships/available/) to download them.
Q: I won’t be able to turn in the application forms in person before the deadline. Can I have a friend or
family member turn them in on my behalf?
A: No. You must apply in person. We will not accept application forms from anyone other than the applicant. If
you are studying abroad, or some other circumstances will prevent you from applying in person, please follow
the instructions in order to consult about your situation during the designated Pre-Application Consultation
Period.
Q: Whose name should I write for my Supervisor/ Advising Professor?
A: If you are an undergraduate student, please ask a professor from your foundation courses, project studies, or a
course with a small number of students. If you are a graduate student, please write your guiding professor’s
name.
13
Q: What should I write for the field, “Institute Enrolled in Before Ritsumeikan?”
A: Please write the name of the Japanese language school, university, etc., which you were enrolled in prior to
entering RU. If you are a graduate school student or otherwise enrolled at RU as an undergraduate student,
please write the name of the institution you attended prior to RU in the blank.
Q: I don’t have a constant amount of allowance sent to me each month, so what should I write in the
corresponding area of the “Monthly Income” section?
A: Please divide the total amount of allowance you receive in a year by 12 and write this in the blank.
Q: My monthly allowance amount was reduced after I submitted my application. Can I change it?
A: No. Changes cannot be made to the application papers after submission.
Q: Which scholarships are covered by this year’s scholarship application?
A: Please see the list located on pages 15 – 19 of the Ritsumeikan University International Student Handbook
2016. Check the “Application Period” column to see whether the application period for each scholarship will
occur during the fall or the spring.
Q: For my “Contact in Japan” and “Contact at Ritsumeikan” can I use the same person?
A: The reason for having these entries for contact people is so the university has multiple ways of getting in touch
with you in the event of an emergency. As such, please enter different people for these two entries. Additionally,
for your “Contact at Ritsumeikan,” please enter 2 different individuals.
Q: I only contact my contact person by SNS, etc. and don’t know their phone number. What should I do?
A: A phone number is an extremely important piece of information used to contact someone in the event of an
emergency. After contacting your contact person by SNS, etc. and asking for their phone number, please enter it
into the form. If you’re documents are missing a contact phone number, they will be considered incomplete.

*Tuition Reduction for SHINGAKU-SHOREI Scholarship, IKUEI Scholarship, and KENKYUSHOREI Scholarship recipients will be applied to your tuition total after your scholarship is
applied.
*Due to revisions to scholarship program rules, the percentage of students receiving
Tuition Reduction will change from the 2017 Academic Year.
(2) Enrollees from 2012 or earlier (old reduction scheme)
●Reduction Amount:Approximately 20%-50% of annual tuition
15
2. Selection Results and Paying Tuition
(1) Selection Results
Selection results will be posted on Campus Web and the bulletin board in mid-June (scheduled).
*Master’s students entering their 3rd semester during the 2016 Spring Semester will be evaluated for
tuition reduction after the IKUEI Scholarship selection results are announced. For those students,
tuition reduction results will be announced at a later date.
*Results for Doctoral students (or equivalent) will be released later than the date above. Results for
said students will be decided after the announcement of results for the KENKYU-SHOREI
Scholarship.
(2) Paying Tuition
1) After tuition reduction results are announced, a tuition invoice is scheduled to be delivered sometime
in June.
2) Be aware that on the tuition invoice there will be no note describing your tuition reduction
percentage.
3) Please note that depending on when you pay for your tuition, the contents of the invoice will differ.
4) Depending on your tuition payment situation, you may receive a tuition invoice that doesn’t reflect
your tuition reduction.
(3) The contents of your tuition invoice depending on your payment situation
1) Students who enrolled from anytime other April 2016
i) If you paid the full cost for spring and fall semester tuition by the end of May, before your
tuition reduction was applied to your spring semester tuition
●Since you have already paid your spring semester tuition in full, you will not receive an invoice
that displays your tuition reduction.
●You will be contacted at the end of the academic year, in March, in order to complete paperwork
to have your overpayment returned to you.
*Filing to have your overpayment returned to you takes about 2 months.
16

reduction was applied to your spring semester tuition
●Since you have already paid your spring semester tuition in full, you will not receive an invoice
that displays your tuition reduction.

that displays a tuition fee which reflects your spring semester overpayment and less your fall
semester tuition reduction amount.
iii) If you have not paid your spring semester tuition in full by the end of May
You will receive an invoice for tuition fees sometime in June. If you have been selected for tuition
reduction, this invoice will reflect your tuition reduction.
2) Students who enrolled in April 2016
i) Undergraduate Students Category I, Undergraduate Students Category II, Undergraduate
Students Category III, and Graduate Students Category I
Before your enrollment, you received an invoice for your tuition that reflected your tuition
reduction, and have already paid it in full. Therefore, you will not receive an additional invoice.
ii) Graduate Students other than Graduate Students Category I
●Since you have already paid your spring semester tuition in full, you will not receive an invoice
that displays your tuition reduction.
●You will receive an invoice for fall semester tuition fees sometime from late September onward
that displays a tuition fee which reflects your spring semester overpayment and less your fall
semester tuition reduction amount.
3. Things to remember for September enrollees
●If you would like to continue to receive tuition reduction from the spring semester of 2016 onward,
you must reapply for tuition reduction during the 2016 Spring Scholarship Application for Privately
Financed International Students.
●If you do not apply for tuition reduction during the 2016 Spring Scholarship Application for PrivatelyFinanced International Students, it will be impossible for you to receive tuition reduction during the fall
semester of 2016 and the spring semester of 2017 (if you are a September enrollee, you must re-apply
for tuition reduction during the spring application period each year).

you are applying for. Therefore, it isn't possible to guarantee that you will be notified with selection results by a
certain date. As foundations contact us with information on their scholarships, only those students who are eligible
to apply will be contacted. (For a general timeline for the various scholarships, please see the International Student
Handbook, "Scholarships" section)
