平成 27 年度ロッド・エリス教授公開授業のお知らせ

ニュージーランドのオークランド国立大学教授，昭和女子大学客員教授エリス・ロデリック氏による下記の授
業を一般に公開いたします。エリス教授は第二言語習得研究の第一人者で，日本でも数多くの本が研究者に読ま
れています。中でも 2008 年の The Study of Second Language Acquisition (2nd Edition, OUP)は，初版をさら
に超えた｢英語教育研究におけるバイブル｣と言える著書です。

：
Explicit and Implicit Language Instruction
Language instruction can be explicit or implicit. Explicit instruction involves intentional learning. It aims
to direct learners’ attention to form, is predetermined and planned, presents target language forms in
isolation, and involves rule explanation combined with controlled practice. In contrast, implicit instruction
involves incidental language learning. It attracts attention to linguistic form, teaches language in context
through communication-oriented activities and encourages free use of target structures. This lecture series
will illustrate these two types of instruction and discuss the rationale for each by drawing on work in second
language acquisition.
Seminar 1: Explicit Language Instruction
This seminar will examine different types of explicit instruction and some of the research that has
investigated each type.
1. The strong and weak-interface positions
2. Inductive versus deductive instruction
3. Isolated explicit instruction – presentation, practice and production (PPP)
4. Integrated explicit instruction
5. Concept-based instruction
6. Comprehension-based instruction
7. Processing instruction
8. Pattern practice
9. Consciousness-raising tasks
10. The role of feedback
Seminar 2: Implicit Language Instruction
This seminar will examine implicit instruction and its basis in SLA theory.
1. Implicit and incidental language learning
2. The non-interface position
3. Theoretical underpinnings of task-based instruction
4. Investigating task-based language teaching
5. Input-enhancement activities
6. Input-based tasks
7. Output-based tasks: (1) design
8. Output-based tasks: (2) implementation
9. Explicit and implicit instruction compared
10. A balanced language curriculum
Assignment
Carry out an analysis of ONE teaching unit in any ONE school English text book you are familiar with. Your
analysis should identify and describe the types of activities in the materials in the text book and identify
whether they involve explicit or implicit instruction. Conclude your assignment with a brief evaluation of
the materials in the unit.
